scissorhands 16 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I just saw this on the Facebook page of JoAnn Kane Musice Service.Proofing John Williams' sketches for his latest movie project, "The Book Thief".There's little doubt that's his handwriting. Muad'Dib 1
Marc 902 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I was about to post it too !Definitely a JW sketch
APBez 11 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I've no reason to doubt your certainty that it's a JW sketch. Just wondering what the tell-tale signs are that this is his work. It's a wonderful read and should provide plenty of scope for a great JW score. Can't believe we've not heard about this project before now.
Smeltington 1,790 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 What the heck!!! Really?? What is this movie?

Jonesy 55 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 What the heck!!! Really?? What is this movie? The Book ThiefIt doesn't seem a new Spielberg/Williams collaboration
Incanus 5,858 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Well this is completely out of the blue but just brilliant news! alicebrallice 1
eitam 381 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I'm laughing like an idiot in front of my computer. I just hope everyone is right and THIS IS a new JW score!
Smeltington 1,790 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Blah, Nazi Germany again! Oh well, I'm excited for any Williams score, and especially one with a new director!
publicist 4,648 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Heavy drama stuff...depends on the strength of the theme, could also be fucking boring. Joni Wiljami 1
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 What unexpected, fantastic news! Here comes Oscar nomination #49...
Smeltington 1,790 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 It's familiar territory for Williams, but I wonder how this came about. For him to take on a non-Spielberg project, it could be that he found it particularly inspiring. The prospect of JW working with a different director is certainly more exciting than American Sniper with Spielberg was.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,024 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Has this ever happened? (since the internet) That we find out about a new score when he is actually working on it?
Koray Savas 2,256 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Seems to me that he's already finished. Movie comes out in November.
Not Mr. Big 4,819 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 So JW has already starting writing music for it? I guess that means we'll get a John Williams score this year after all!
BloodBoal 7,544 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 You guys do realize that they're talking about the other John Williams?
scissorhands 16 Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Seems to me that he's already finished. Movie comes out in November. He has yet to record it, probably after he comes back from his annual East Coast sojourn.
Not Mr. Big 4,819 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 The movie itself sounds a little fishy. This is the writer's 1st movie and the directors 2nd I believe.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,024 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Yeah, It's really weird. When was the last time JW worked with a director that was virtually unknown?
Maurizio 5,970 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 A new Williams score to look forward to by the end of the year--bloody amazing! When was the last time JW worked with a director that was virtually unknown?1986, for SpaceCamp, I'd say.Don't forget that he probably got interested into the project because of the book on which the movie is based, like many times he did in the past. Or maybe he's a fan of Downton Abbey and wished to work with one of its director
Thor 9,311 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 This is great...and it's not only proof of Williams sustained stamina, but that he has somewhat of a 'new spring' -- what with the increased concert ratio, accepting the new STAR WARS, the concert works left and right and now also a new score not for Spielberg. It's a fairly common phenomenon for 80+ years olds when they realize it's nearing the end, but at the same time feeling in good shape and the self-inflicted pressure that they have a lot more to give!I love it. Once 1
Jay 42,832 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Wow! What random news to read checking into the site for the first time in a few days. Talk about coming out of nowhere! Someone needs to interview Williams now about this project! Once 1
Maurizio 5,970 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Has this ever happened? (since the internet) That we find out about a new score when he is actually working on it?I remember the times when I found out of a new JW score only by seeing the movie's poster or reading to the quick trailer credits!
filmmusic 2,663 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I just saw it too! This came out of nowhere!!!I wonder if we will be expecting a 2nd Schindler's List!!
Not Mr. Big 4,819 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I guess the director hasn't worked on many films but he did direct the show Downtown Abbey apparently. I'm more hopeful now, considering how well received the show was.http://screenterrier.blogspot.com/2013/08/first-look-at-book-thief.htmlHere are some early photos and other production info. It looks and sounds a lot like War Horse.
filmmusic 2,663 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 It could also have an "Empire of the Sun" score!
Marc 902 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I'd heard of that movie a while ago, it features this amazing young actress Sophie Nélisse, whom I saw in another movie and absolutely blew me away !So I was definitely looking forward to seeing that one, but now add JW on top of that Can't wait !
Ricard 2,379 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Has this ever happened? (since the internet) That we find out about a new score when he is actually working on it?Yes, Angela's Ashes for instance (coincidentally also starring Emily Watson). He revealed he was working on the project during a promotional chat for TPM.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,024 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Lol that was before Internet for me.

Muad'Dib 1,951 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I'm laughing like an idiot in front of my computer. I just hope everyone is right and THIS IS a new JW score! Lol I'm doing the exact same thing, I can't stop smiling!!! I had a crappy day so this news turned my whole day around The score will be a serious one for sure but let's see what kind of. Anyways, I'm really excited!!!Now... Who's gonna make a mock-up of that sheet we can see?
Jilal 628 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 This is a great, unexpected announcement. I'm thrilled to hear the score!Now... Who's gonna make a mock-up of that sheet we can see? I'm afraid the picture is too small to make anything out of the sketch - some notes on the computer are legible though.
Adervae 1 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 You guys do realize that they're talking about the other John Williams? Are you serious? The guitarist?

MSM 128 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Great news!! A freshly (re)new(ed) collaboration... Happy it's not another Spielberg movie for a change! Spielberg movies are getting too sentimental these days.Nice pics btw, never realized the proof reading means literally reading and manually correcting, sitting at a kitchen table...

MSM 128 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 The movie looks and sounds pretty sentimental to me. The stills remind me of War Horse. It did to me at first as well, but it can work out quite differently depending on the script and the director. What similar projects do we know from this director?
Ricard 2,379 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Yay for 15 years of JWFan!February 5, 2014 will be the date (6 months from now)

What similar projects do we know from this director?I checked Rotten Tomatoes. He's done one movie and it's sitting at 50% but he also directed Downtown Abbey apparently. This is the writer's very first project I believe. *edit* Nevermind, I was looking at the wrong writer, here is the screenwriter's IMDB page. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0678104/?ref_=tt_ov_wrNot very promising.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,024 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 How they hell did they hook JW?Can we hire him?We should hire JW to write a theme for the 15th anniversarry. Ricard 1
