Gnome in Plaid reacted to Disco Stu in Oscars Won’t Televise All Awards, Adds Popular Film Category
This new category manages to be disrespectful to both sets of films.   It tells the popular films “You’re not good enough to be over there.” and it tells the BP films “You could never find a major audience so you belong over here”

I can think of a dozen choices off the top of my head more deserving of their own category besides "most popular film."

    Best Motion Capture Performance
    Best Choreography/Stunt Performances
Best Voice Acting in an Animated Film
    etc, etc...

Gnome in Plaid reacted to artguy360 in Nixon is a truly underrated JW score
Thread title says it all. JW was firing on all cylinders for Nixon and I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves. The entire score is oppressively weighty and dark but not in a monotonous way. The main theme is brilliant. It's basically the story of the Nixon presidency in about 5 minutes of relentless, pounding music that is at times full on evil, and others beating with the drum of breaking news, and then strangely, maybe defiantly and stubbornly dignified in a twisted kind of way. The music really lives up to the title "The Turbulent Years." I can't think of another JW main theme that has such a clear narrative structure and is so varied in the emotions and ideas it expresses: I don't know why this main theme isn't talked about more often as among JW's best.

The rest of the music takes us to Watergate with some kickass JW conspiratorial music, into Nixon's childhood with some bittersweet, yearning music that somehow also maintains hints of the oppressive weight from the rest of the score, and right into some powerful, pounding music for some of Nixon's biggest political moments like his convention speech.

Even in its quieter moments the music is scored with such dramatic flair that it demands to be noticed such as in the opening scenes of the film where the low, driving brass and high strings contrast beautifully as we go deeper and deeper into the White House and Nixon's state of mind.

What do you think? What are y'all's impressions of the Nixon score? What other highlights from the score should we all be aware of?

Gnome in Plaid reacted to Nick Parker in Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best considered suicide
Ya know what, screw Star Wars. At this point, I don't know if it'd be better for Star Wars to continue, to show these bizarro world deluded, back-patting jackasses who consider other's suffering a point of personal pride that their disgusting, sub-human behavior doesn't amount to any kind of "victory" (to which I'm sure they would set to "Yub Nub" and bonfires); or for Star Wars to just end, for these people to wax nostalgic about it and realize that their precious, elusive cinematic treasures and manna from heaven will never see another incarnation in their lifetimes. Of course, I'm sure they'd find something else to get demented about.

The more time goes on, the more I practice self-hynoptic tunnel vision, seeing Star Wars purely as a imaginative, quaint contribution and gift from some truly great, gifted artists of our time and beyond, including the singular talents of a deeply skilled American composer named Mr. John Williams.

Yes, this is true. For example, while Trump truly transcends political boundaries and is a humanistically unfit mess of a world leader, people licking their lips savoring the utter glee from telling him and affiliated officials to die in so many vile ways offers little better in the realms of humanism they believe have been so violated.

The Force theme statement from the opening of Revenge of the Sith is probably my favorite iteration of the theme.  Just awesome.

Deadpool 2 by Tyler Bates. Looks like Tyler Bates decided to follow John Williams' footsteps and also adapt Robert Graves' The Battle of the Trees to add extra spiritual dimension to a major fight scene. This time, they first translated it into Greek then into Sanskrit and then into Latin

I'd say that his very first feature score all the way back in 1957, for the underrated/overlooked noir western Black Patch, *definitely* qualifies for this thread. We discuss it with lengthy sound clips in our latest Goldsmith Odyssey podcast here: http://www.goldsmithodyssey.com

Curious to hear if anyone else loves this score as much as I do. It *needs* a new recording as the original recording is lost.

All the time-lapse shots in House of Sand and Fog are marvelous, but it'd be hard to distill those in to a screenshot, but this brief shot is mixed in, and really capitalizes on the mood and setting.  Leave it to Roger Deakins to make the glare off a windshield beautiful.

What even is this, you ask?  Looking vertically at the sun through snow starting to cover a skylight.  Really, all of The Fountain is stunning, but something about this shot has always stood out to me.

The last five minutes or so of Attack of the Clones are great!  It's the best musical finale of the entire series.  (The rest, not so much...)

I love how when this shot begins, all you see is a single spire. Then the camera pans back, and it is revealed that it is just a mere turret on the vast fortress of Barad-dûr.

Keisuke Wakao Plays the Music of John Williams by John Williams: Simpy wonderful, one of the best if not the best chamber sized adaptations of Maestro's music.

Providence by Miklós Rózsa: Autumnal is the best word to describe this. At times pensive and beautifully melancholic and at times harsh but always indelibly Rózsa. The 2013 release features the entire score but for contractual reasons they had to retain the original soundtrack album so all of the unreleased material placed at the end of the disc which is bit of an unfortunate choice. Also the masters of this material are far from pristine but despite this the quality of the music shines through. To my ears more recently attuned to the sword and sandal epics of the maestro this score is a breath of fresh air.

Super 8 by Michael Giacchino: Just like the film this seems to be an homage to the Spielberg/Williams collaborations of 1980's and the very lengthy album/score seems to be constructed in that vein in style and thematic ideas, starting quietly and in very shorts snippets before steadily building toward the grand finale of Letting Go. While the album might be a tad long and you could easily whittle it down to a satisfying 45 minute listening experience I have to say the way Gia builds this one is far more satisfying than his current blockbuster output.

I'd at the very least try taking the HD into some tech repair shop.  I dropped one a few years ago, but it turned out the drive itself was fine and what I'd broken was the USB connection.  It worked fine once I pulled it out of the enclosure and hooked it up to a SATA to USB cable.

The Burbs is one of the few works of all existing music which is actually funny without film and context, cause the music itself is telling jokes - it's joking about itself.

More comedy movies should have this kind of adult, ironic and sometimes even sarcastic commentary as music, instead of the usual stacato flutes and clarinets, accompanied by a triangle. These unintelligent scores don't make me laugh, but roll my eyes.

Repairing a slipped disc is no easy fix. It can be an ordeal for the patient, and there's no guarantee that the pain will end after a risky fusion surgery. Many patients however report improvement after several months or even years of exercising the core muscles, and eventually the herniation heals.

Only professional filmmakers are allowed to critique the work of their peers. The masses must love it unquestioningly as they have no idea what goes into making a film.
