Mr. Who got a reaction from badbu in Hans Zimmer's DUNE PART TWO (2024)
Just saw the movie again and was just as impressed as the first time! The movie is a masterpiece! I also appreciate the score much more on second viewing, having listened to the OST, as the thematic development is so satisfying to hear unfold! The big scene which happens after Paul Arrives in the South remains super intense and everything that follows is just pure cinema!

I hope we get a Sketchbook release for Part 2 as there is probably a lot of unused stuff lying around!

The love theme/atreides theme was partly written during the scoring process of Dune Part One but was adapted and developed further after the score was finished. We got a version of this development on the sketchbook track 3.

For example at 0:15 in this clip we can hear the theme:

The opening section performed here in this clip is what I call the House Atreides call to Arms section A variation because this is also used in Armada, when the Atreides soldiers and Gurney run towards the Harkonnens in the battle.

In Part Two, the A section is not used in this way but has the Love variation which shares some progressions and melodic pets but is quite different (performed on duduk often).

The B section is played at 0:47 in the clip linked above and is used a lot in Part Two in the romantic cues but often with a slightly different harmonic accompaniment, giving the theme a different feeling in Part Two, like in the case of Kiss The Ring, a quite sad feeling.
The theme that is used a lot for House Atreides is what I call the House Atreides Noble theme. It appears in the second half of Herald of the Change, in My Road Leads into the Desert and several others including the second part of Only I Shall Remain.

Everyone seems to have a slightly different view of what the themes in Leaving Caladan represent but the 8 note theme I usually just call the Dune main theme whereas the theme plying in the opening of Leaving Caladan or Sanctuary are either Dune Main B or the Arrakis theme (which I think another member, Mephariel used). Both themes are very entwined and work great together but I would say that they’re separate themes.
I definitively wouldn’t say that any of them represent Caladan though.

There is a motif that represents Sandworm Power though which is this kind of siren like sliding motif together with the low bass guitar part. It plays towards the end of Ripples in the Sand (before the main theme comes in at the end) and also appears in other sand worm moments.

I really wish the end section of “Song of the Sisters” was used more in the movies. It has such a mysterious and epic theme to it. Hopefully in “Dune Messiah” we’ll get it on the big screen.

No cameras spotted (and that is a shame, I was hoping at least for a recording on Stage+ ) but the microphones were actually visible above the stage. I'm just wondering whether they were recording the concert or just simply hanging there as permanent equipment of the hall.

The concert was AMAZING!!! The best AD concert I have ever been to (London 2014/Kraków 2019/Vienna 2024).

I prepared a quick analysis of what tracks were used in each suite (overall almost 2h of music!)

    1. Godzilla (Godzilla! / Godzilla's Victory / Back to the Ocean) - 6 min.
    2. Pelléas et Mélisande - I. Comme un oiseau pourchassé - 8 min.
    3. Pelléas et Mélisande - II. Ils regardent la lumière - 5,5 min.
    4. Wes Anderson's Suite - Fantastic Mr. Fox (Jimmy Squirrel And Co. / High-Speed French Train / Boggis, Bunce, And Bean / Canis Lupus / Kristofferson's Theme / Stunt Expo 2004 / Great Harrowsford Square) - 9 min.
    5. Wes Anderson's Suite - The Grand Budapest Hotel (Mr. Mustafa / A Prayer for Madame D & Last Will and Testament / Canto At Gabelmeister’s Peak) - 4 min.
    6. Wes Anderson's Suite - The French Dispatch (Obituary) 3,5 min.
    7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1: Obliviate / Sky Battle / Fireplaces Escape / Detonators / Destroying the Locket; Part 2: Statues / Broomsticks and Fire / Courtyard Apocalypse / The Tunnel / Dragon Flight / Lily’s Theme / Showdown) - 13 min.
    8. The King's Speech (The King’s Speech / My Kingom, My Rules) - 4 min.
    9. The Shape of Water (The Creature / Five Stars General / The Shape of Water / Spy Meeting / The Escape / Rainy Day / Watching Ruth / Elisa and Zelda / Without You / Overflow of Love) - 21 min.
    10. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Carlo's Theme / Spazzatura / The Pine Cone / Big Lies / Resurrection / Saving Geppetto / Pinocchio's Choice / Ciao Papa) - 15,5 min.
    11. The Imitation Game (Carrots and Peas / Crosswords / U-Boats / Mission / Alone with Numbers / The Headmaster / End of War / The Imitation Game / Alan Turing's Legacy) 15,5 min.

    ENCORE
    12. Girl with a Pearl Earring (Griet's Theme) - 4 min.
    13. Eiffel (Valse d'Eiffel) - 3 min.

What was so special about this particular concert, in my opinion?
    1. Golden Hall itself, of course  and the fact that he was probably the third film music composer playing there after Williams and Hisaishi.
    2. Desplat played some of his recent scores like Pinocchio, French Dispatch or Eiffel, which was refreshing. I never spotted Fantastic Mr. Fox suite in concert before neither.
    3. He also prepared completely new, extended suites from his trademark scores (Godzilla, Imitation Game, Shape of Water). He played almost half of the Imitation Game and Shape of Water albums (!) He usually plays the main themes from Godzilla and Imitation Game and 7- or 12- minutes long suite of The Shape of Water so he really did his best this time.
    4. I think that for the first time he had a choir on the stage (not counting Hollywood in Vienna 2016 cause he was not conducting). A children choir in Fantastic Mr. Fox and at the end of "Ciao Papa" from Pinocchio gave me goosebumps.
    5. He got a standing ovation and was very moved, I have never seen him like this before (and I always sit in front rows ).

To carry on @WampaRat’s thematic glossary I put together a thematic breakdown of the score as well as the chronological order. I’ve seen the film three times now and honestly it’s one of the best things I’ve watched in a long time. In combination with Part One I’d say this is a 10/10 movie.

    RETURNING THEMES/MOTIFS

    Dune Main Theme -
I’ll be classifying the four-note theme as the “A” theme and the eight-note theme as the “B” theme to stay consistent. When both play at once I’ll refer to it as the main theme.

    Fate/“The One” Theme -
This theme is extremely underplayed on album. The theme in this film basically becomes Jessica’s after she… changes. It’s played on woodwinds quite a lot as she enacts her plans. There is a major missing variation of this theme that plays towards the end of the film. It has the Kwisatz Haderach motif as a counterpoint. I’m sure this will be on the FYC album.

    Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords -
Sadly this motif takes a backseat in this score. It plays a select couple times but doesn’t nearly have the presence it did in the first film.

    Tragic Noble Theme -
Another theme that is diluted this time around. It has a great appearance at the end of “Only I Will Remain” but that track doesn’t actually play during the film only the credits.

    Impending Doom Motif -
Although not actually appearing as much as it did in the first film, this motif makes a major impact on the film by playing in select important scenes relating to Paul’s dark future or even the darker actions he takes here.

    Sorrow/Loss Motif -
Sadly not featured on the album but there is a track in the film that features this motif. It plays twice and both times relates to how the Bene Gesserit prophecy is taking over the Fremen and leading them to war. Hopefully this track will be on FYC album.

    House Atreides/Paul and Chani’s Love Theme -
This theme goes from barely being featured in the first film to becoming the main theme of the second. It evolves from the bagpipe power anthem for House Atreides to a beautiful woodwind/Blade Runner-esque love theme for Paul and Chani.

Bene Gesserit Seduction Motif/Feyd Rautha Motif -
This motif was originally featured on the second half of the track, “Song of the Sisters” from the sketchbook album. It was then developed menacingly into the six-note Feyd Rautha Motif now heard in this film.

    Bene Gesserit Whispers/Chant

    Arrakis Drum Motif

    Harkonnen Screech

    Harkonnen Clang

    Fremen Chimes -
This is a new motif that I noticed upon rewatching both films. It’s like a small little chime march that appears when characters are walking through the rocky terrain of the Sietches. It has a big appearance that’s not on the new album but it’s when…

    (Sandwalk Video (FYC) - 0:22)
    (Stillsuits - 1:55)

    NEW THEMES/MOTIFS

    Kwisatz Haderach Motif -
New dark three-note cello motif for the culmination of the Bene Gesserit breeding process; the Kwisatz Haderach. Also has a drum rhythm behind it. Blares loud in theaters and often acts as a counterpoint to other main themes. It represents both Paul and Feyd as they’re both prospects for the Kwisatz Haderach.

    (Harkonnen Arena - 4:48)
    (Travel South - 0:06)
    (Arrival - 0:00)
    (You Fought Well - 0:12)

    The Emperor’s Motif -
Loud and grand motif that represents the emperor of the known universe. Features choir and some brass which most of Dune doesn’t have.

    (The Emperor - 0:39)

I really hope we see more expanded scores this year from LLL records because if they release via anniversary dates they might follow the below schedule, if not would be grate if they just released all of the Bond scores like they did in 2003 but obviously fully expanded with all the missing music ques.

Top of my list are all of the John Barry Bond scores but most wanted expansions are Moonraker , Thunderball & OHMSS

    2024:

The Two Towers Extended Edition is my favorite out of them all. But FOTR theatrical is probably my favorite out of the 3 theatrical versions.

I think it would be curious to see if WB continues the franchise without Denis Villeneuve. He said he won't do anymore after Messiah.

I'm quite pleased with how spectacularly Dune is doing, critically and commercially! Not just because I like the film (and the first one), and want to see more, but it's incredibly gratifying to see a cerebral, expertly crafted science fiction film doing so well. Especially one that makes intelligent use of CGI, made by people who seem to have passion and care about what they're doing. This isn't assembly-line filmmaking, and it's nice to see a genre film that doesn't involve Superheroes and people getting slammed into walls at the top of the box office.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Hopefully this bodes well for the future, not just for Dune but for cinema in general.

Dune Part 2 - the conflict between the various factions for control of Arrakis' 'spice' production begins in earnest, and in its depiction Villeneuve turns in an absolutely spectacular sci-fi epic that thrills the eye and stirs the blood. Brilliant.

Just got out of the theater. What a trip. Honestly this is the kind of film I’ve been waiting for. Sci-fi on an epic scale that actually has deep, meaningful messages and thoughts. The novel of Dune has some excellent philosophy on the dangers of messiahs and Denis chose to focus on that aspect. As opposed to following the book one-for-one he took the plot of the novel and developed it to follow this message. Messianic figures can sway the way of history. It’s been proven time and time again in our own world and the message is just as important now as it was when Herbert first wrote the novel. These figures are powerful and with that power comes consequences.

The film itself as a movie experience goes was miles ahead of Part One. Way more action, a solid three-act structure, better characters, more intrigue, and overall a more engaging narrative. There was also a lot of much needed levity. The humor mostly came from Javier Bardem as Stilgar (My personal favorite character) and while it wasn’t overplayed (As it would be in a Marvel film) it definitely brought a balance to the darkness of the picture. This is a dark and depressing film. The ending is not happy and overall I would call the film a tragedy. There is an unavoidable outcome and it’s painful to see it slowly unfold. Another thing improved over the first film are the villains. I liked what they did with Raban and Austin Butler’s new character Feyd Rautha was a scene stealer. Rebecca Ferguson’s Jessica became way more interesting this time around as well as Paul himself. Chalamet steps up to the plate as a messianic hero. Zendaya’s character Chani after getting built up so much in the last movie actually turned out to be a great addition. She’s kind and gentle but also extremely badass and independent when need be. The special effects and sound design are out of this world as expected and Greg Fraser continues to prove he’s one of the best working cinematographers right now. Every frame could be a wall paper.

The music I loved. I loved the score in the first one and I love the score even more here. It works absolute magic in the film and my favorite cue, “Southern Messiah,” ended up playing in the most perfect way possible. Lots of unreleased cues and the new motif that I thought was for the emperor turns out to be for something much more sinister; the Kwisatz Haderach.

I heard there were a few major changes from the book so I went in expecting this. However every single change I think benefited this version of the Dune story. I personally loved that Denis adapted this work for the modern times by making Chani not so one-note and really delving into the dangers of Paul and what he means. Compare this film to Lynch’s where Paul is akin to Luke Skywalker. Here Paul is portrayed for what he is. My favorite kind of storytelling is that of fallen heroes. Death Note, Attack on Titan, and Breaking Bad are excellent examples of this. We haven’t had a great epic film to portray this sort of tale on a massive scale since the Godfather films. Now Dune has brought it back. I think it’s truly important for audiences to see that “heroic” characters are not always heroic to all sides and that there are consequences to radical belief. So I’m so glad we have films like this that show the two sides of the coin (Or rather that there are no sides). The Reverend Mother says so herself. Oh and there is one big change to a certain character from the book but I think it was for the best. It would’ve been unfilmable in my opinion.

This movie cements both parts of Dune as all-time great sci-fi films and also as a whole with both movies combined I would say this becomes an all-time epic in general. I don’t think Denis could’ve done a better job with this and this is definitely his magnum opus. Dune: Messiah will be very interesting because the ending of this film leaves one major plot thread in a different place than the books. This plot thread is literally the driving force of Dune Messiah so I honestly don’t know how they would even adapt the book without completely changing the plot. I think what Denis did with the change was better than the book’s ending but Dune Messiah hinges on this thing that Denis changed. Who knows. For now we have two films that are for sci-fi what Lord of the Rings was for fantasy.

My favorite part of the film was actually just a line:

Yeah it’s clear that villenueve was looking for something very specific score wise. Looking at the scores in his earlier movies both Dune scores are a lot more melodic than the scores to said earlier movies.

I saw the movie last night and was completely blown away! I was spellbound throughout the whole movie and it was one of my best experiences ces in a cinema. I loved the first movie and think this one is even better. The decision to split the book into two films was necessary and both films feel like complete movies which are part of a larger story. The first film set the stage and alongside all the big story beats that happened set up a lot of lore and history which is then further developed and built on in part two which has much more action.

The movie looks incredible and having avoided the trailers, I was blown away by the imagery which together with the score transports you to Arrakis! Zimmer delivered a great score which builds on the material from the first score (both the score in the film and the sketchbook ideas). The love theme (which is derived from the House Atreides theme) is beautiful and cues like Time in Between Storms and Kiss the Ring are extremely moving. There are a lot of motifs, sounds and themes which refer to different ideas, characters and locations and I will definitively try to do some type of analysis of the album. I really liked how the ideas from Song of the Sisters was used in the Arena scene and in the seduction scene as that was always my favorite part of that suite. Even though a lot of major moments are included on the ost, there is quite a bit missing including the prologue.

Denis Villenueve is a genius filmmaker who somehow manages to pull off adapting this dense book and you can tell that he has a real understanding of the source material. Chalame does a great job as Paul (the scene where he takes power is incredible) and Ferguson steals the show in her scenes (she is really scary at times). Zendeya as Chani and Butler as Feyd Rautha also deliver and in particular Bardem as Stilgar does a great job and delivers both serious and some lighthearted moments. The messiah scene has to be a nod to Life of Brian haha!

The sequel was definitively worth the wait and I’m looking forward to seeing it again soon!
