Yavar Moradi reacted to Fancyarcher in New podcast with yours truly: THE GOLDSMITH ODYSSEY
Ooh, sounds good. I'll give it a listen later, but so far it seems promising, having John Takis on is great, big fan of his liner notes. Also I haven't listened to it in years but I remember Nightmare As A Child having a real freaky sounding 60's score.

Looking forward to The Invaders discussion, though obviously that won't be till the end of the year, but I can wait. The other episodes sound just as good / interesting, especially you guys starting the discussion on his work on Thriller.

Once again I must apologize for a tardy reply Fancyarcher, though I hope you noticed I did "like" your post right away. (I've had my hands very full with keeping a seasonal performing arts group running, but the season just ended last night.)

I am so glad to hear that Episode 9 was your new favorite episode, topping 5-7! We now have our Episode 10 up, and if you like in-depth score discussion, I think it might even top Episode 9 for you. It is also the first one where we have a special guest -- in this case, film music writer John Takis, who most recently penned the notes for Quartet's Papillon release. He brings a wealth of additional score insight to this 'cast so I had a much easier job! Can't wait to hear what you (and others, if they are still reading this thread) think about our latest:

We agree with you on The Invaders overall, which is why we are planning to give it its own episode all to itself (we also plan to have a special guest for this one). You'll have to be a little patient for us to get to it though because we are going as chronologically as possible. Here's our upcoming schedule (I think we'll go back to an every other week schedule soon):

    1. Man on the Beach (an unused pilot score titled “Jazz Theme #1” on the Goldsmith Twilight Zone disc) with Studio One “Fair-Haired Boy” (“Jazz Theme #2" on the same) as a music-only prelude/bonus piece since we can't find video of the program
    2. Special CBS Library Music episode (much of this was also used on The Twilight Zone)
    3. Gunsmoke #1 "Doc Judge" + "The Blacksmith" + "The Wake" (the three 1960 episodes)
    4. Studs Lonigan
    5. Have Gun - Will Travel (both episodes) + Flaming Star (finale cue...film released in December 1960)
    6. Thriller #1 "The Cheaters" 12/27/60 + "The Poisoner" 1/10/61
    7. The Twilight Zone #3 "Dust" 1/6/61 + "Back There" 1/13/61
    8. The Twilight Zone #4 "The Invaders" 1/27/61

Oh, wasn't aware of that, might look into it. Watching the movie again made me realise I don't really want that in a playlist, though.

Mumia Attack is named confusingly - until now I thought it underscored the deleted scene where mummies pop out of the ground before they open Imhotep's Sarcophagus, but it's actually the Medjai attack, so I renamed the track appropriately. I find this kind of strict adherence to the composer's original cue titles unnecessary, especially when he made mistakes like this and misspelling Tuareg. The cue assembly has the original titles anyway, just correct the final track titles! Will the eventual SW sets have The Great Dual and call the iconic baddie Vadar, too?

TFA felt like Williams was bored to you? I didn't get any of that sense till TLJ. I mean, TFA ain't the best Star Wars score, but it does introduce some pretty fantastic new themes - especially Rey's.

Yeah but i still associate him with a narrative propulsiveness that I’m not sure I’d want from a TNG sequel series.  This show should slooooow the fuck down from what’s normal pace these days.

I felt slightly depressed that this was originally only going to be digital or vinyl. CDs are truly dying and I for one will not go down without taking everyone of you with me!

One day there won't be CD releases at all, just vinyl! Arggh!

I find Schindler's to be quite accessible, more so than the slow Ryan. Of the latter my favorites are HTTF (I don't mind JW's OTT writing) and Omaha beach - I think these two represent the score nicely.

Anyway, they might have come up with an original one, like with Jurassic Park, A.I., E.T. etc.

I expect that up be released within a year or two! That, and JFK and Born on the Fourth of July!

I myself have had a feeling that an expanded release of the Maestro’s score to Amistad would happen within the year or so. Very valid point. There is a lot of unreleased music for that.

It's a very effective pro-war propaganda movie. In fact, it's so effective, some people don't even understand or realize it's propaganda.

    Opening shot: American flag
    Closing shot: American  flag
The Message: American soldiers are brave heroes, who fight for freedom and democracy, and they are the good guys. They go through hell, and war is hell, but war is necessary, and we want you to think it's necessary. Their country will forever be grateful to them for fighting it. In fact, if it weren't for them, we'd all be speaking German! (And don't you ever forget that when we illegally attack Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, you name it.!)

If you really don't get that this movie is pro-war propaganda, you must be a brainwashed American!

    Well I said pro-American, not pro-war.   I don't think the film's pro-war.

However, I don't think it's exactly anti-war either.  Despite the gruesome depiction of violence, the film follows in the tradition of many WW II films as portraying war as a heroic endeavour.  That's not a criticism, many of the best war movies do.  But SPR is by and large a war film in the tradition of classic American war films (again, not a criticism).

The movie itself, while expertly shot by Spielberg as always, is totally bs, of course. Just your regular, simplistic American pro-war propaganda bs movie, has little to do with historical facts.

But as a piece of fiction, it's rather entertaining. And well scored, of course.

But considering they've just done a late 90s Spielberg-Williams collaboration distributed by DreamWorks, Amistad is certainly gonna follow!

The OST sounds kind of muddy too, like they dubbed the final mix off some bad 90s analog system.  A fresh digital scan of the original elements mastered properly would sound pretty great I imagine

Well this was unexpected news. Saving Private Ryan was in my mind one of the last Spielberg/Williams scores in need of an expanded release.
