GerateWohl reacted to Andy in The Cult Exploitation Trash B-Movie Thread
Doesn’t this Sky Pirates (1986) Blu Ray set look awesome? Well, it is. I own it. Unfortunately the movie itself is a real stinker.
The Bad:
The script is really boring, cluttered and confusing. The pacing is blah. It really could’ve used more tongue in cheek humor like the superior Indy rip-off, King Solomon’s Mines.
The Good:
The aerial stunt work is quite effective. Many of the airplane scenes look better than anything we’d see 3 years later in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In fact, I’m not certain if any models were used at all.
Composer Brian May delivers the goods with a cracking fun jaunty score.
It’s a shame this Ozploitation Indy Rip-Off didn’t lean more into the fun, because it doesn’t look cheap, the costume designer did well, and the marketing department gave it their best.
The deluxe Blu Ray comes with a really cool booklet on “Indiana Clones”, a guide to Raiders rip-offs.
I’ve not seen either of those. Project Wolf Hunting looks like a decent modern violence fest.

The Last trash B movie I saw was probably the korean flick "Project Wolf Hunting". Uncut of course.
A lot of exagerated super violence. Tons of blood.
And one of the movies with the most twists I have ever seen.
Still didn't motivate me to check out any sequel.
BTW Anybody here seen "The Greasy Strangler"?

GerateWohl reacted to Jay in NEW book by Frank Lehman - The Skywalker Symphonies: Musical Storytelling in Star Wars
The happy news I cryptically alluded to last week is now something I can make official: I just signed a book contract with OUP for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴! It's a book it feels like I've been writing in my head for a long, long time -- since middle school, kinda? And unless Williams somehow returns to write another entry in the series, I'm treating it a chance to provide a properly 𝘴𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 investigation into these scores, all nine of them. Even Rise of Skywalker?? 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 Rise of Skywalker! My hope is this book does some justice to the complexity, challenge, and sheer magic of this music. Now, back to the grindstone! https://www.facebook.com/Falstaft/posts/pfbid0L6wUjeDDxj6AmhwHh1f9obrVMJfYbPx4GJM8YaEWiZtqxwp37A88monPFVDxBQ26l
Congratulations, @Falstaft!

GerateWohl reacted to Edmilson in Last Night I dreamed about John Williams...
I had kind of a John Williams dream last night...
In my dream, I saw a friend of mine riding a segway that somehow looked like a TIE Fighter. So I came to him and said something like "you remind me of a movie!", to which he replied "which movie?". Then, I started singing the main melody from "Here They Come" from A New Hope.
However, my friend didn't get it and just looked at me like "WTF?". Sigh... Not even in dreams people around me recognize Star Wars cues

GerateWohl got a reaction from JNHFan2000 in A Philippe Rombi Thread
I recommend all mentioned in my post at the top of this thread.
And like @JNHFan2000 mentioned, Angel, Nouvelle Guerre des Boutons & Un Homme Et Son Chien are beautiful, too.

GerateWohl reacted to Amer in A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - 2021 20th Anniversary Edition (reissue of 2015 3CD set) from La-La Land Records
As Bonneys vocals were recorded at Royce Hall (and boy do I love the sound of that recording..) The availability of the hall could be the reason why it was recorded late.

GerateWohl reacted to King Mark in John Williams Fan Club Theme
Williams_Fan_Theme.mp3
Someone made this mock up years ago. I apologise if I wasn't allowed to post it or something. It's actually a pretty cool theme.
That's great! You might live long enough to hear the Expanded Star Wars Prequel scores.

GerateWohl got a reaction from JTN in What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
Wuthering Heights - Ryuichi Sakamoto
A really beautiful score with a fine striking longlined love theme that seems to be repeated about a hundred times. But when the album is over you just want to start again from the beginning.

Aliens. This a music from a man who is at the brink of murdering his director.

GerateWohl reacted to Holko in What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
First ever listen to El Cid (Tadlow), never seen the movie or heard anything besides highlights from it. I don't know how Rózsa did it but his 2.5 hour scores just don't feel their length, they flow well, take needed breaks from loud action and fanfares, tell a story.
Of course inevitably comparisons with Ben-Hur started popping up with the references/"ripoffs" in there, and of course that one comes out on top with its massive and diverse but easily identifiable and emotionally clear theme library and perfect structure with every cue doing something with those themes for the narrative, but there's not many scores it could lose against. Cid's a bit more "film score-ey" - "hey let's put a minute of music here too" "sure I'll do some fanfare and reprise a theme" "whoops dropped it, it was just some throwaway anyway".
I really love the hero themes and the love theme and their development, but on this first time couldn't latch onto others even by reading along with the booklet - but this was the first time, I'm sure they'll come. There are definitely highlights outside those main themes that stand out like Entry of the Nobles and especially the material for the twins!

GerateWohl got a reaction from JTN in Your Favourite Jerry Goldsmith Score
I managed to get my hands on this one and, gosh, it shows again, why I prefer the young Goldsmith over the old.
Great score, great album.
Made it immediately into my top five ever Western scores.

GerateWohl reacted to JNHFan2000 in The Bad Batch - The Clone Wars Spinoff show
Episode 9 x The Harbinger
Loved this!! Asajj Ventress has always been one of my favourite characters, so I loved seeing her here.
Her fight scene with the Bad Batch, was extremely well done. Great choreograhpy and animation. I'm impressed by the animation each episode, it's just so inctedibly good. If you compare this to the Clone Wars film, it's remarkable!
There was also some really great music in here. The statement of the bad batch theme during the fight was great and there were some really beautiful moments with Ventress & Omega.
Next week 2 episodes! Let's see how quick the story is gonna move

GerateWohl reacted to JNHFan2000 in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Gil Kenan - score by Dario Marianelli - March 22, 2024)
I think that's gonna be the new Laika film due for next year.

GerateWohl got a reaction from Trope in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Gil Kenan - score by Dario Marianelli - March 22, 2024)
Somehow similar impression on my end. Listening I thought, this is really a good Ghostbusters score with solid references to the original.
I just was never a super fan of the original score. And Marianelli is somehow too good at adapting to other styles and works (like in Bumblebee) that it is hard to find the Marianelli in there, that I like so much.
So, it is a good sequel score to an original score, that I hardly listen to (even though it is good and I like it... somehow).
I am looking forward to Marianelli's next original work, that is not adapting to someone elses film music work.

Having heard the entire album now, I can say this is definitely very solid. Not outstanding, as others have pointed out, but I really enjoyed myself during those 61 minutes. The final track is indeed the best of the lot.
