Really glad to see Young Indy come to streaming as it's a show I've wanted to watch for ages. The four volumes of music by Laurence Rosenthal and Joel McNeely are much treasured (one of the first times I realised that TV music could be as big in scope as that for film - obviously that gap is much narrower, if it exists at all, these days) and it'll be great to see the shows they go with. Will have to give the Talgorn scores that he put on YouTube another listen. Here's one to get you going!

Gave Angel a spin today and bloody hell, what a marvellous score. Also gave his latest score for Francois Ozon a listen, Mon Crime, which is like if Chinatown had been fun... Clearly need to explore more of his stuff, especially for Ozon, who seems to be a regular collaborator.

Yes, don't you remember the bit where Nixon demanded his shuttle to escape Watergate? Classic moment.

Mr Skeffington by Franz Waxman. William Stromberg conducting the Moscow Symphony in a very fine recording of a classic Waxman score. However, I'm mainly posting so I can share, what I think we can all agree, is (alongside "Wanker" from Kamen's score to The Winter Guest) one of the best track titles of all time "Young Fanny, Diphtheria Montage". Really makes you wanna watch the film...

Also couldn't agree more than the original recording sounds pretty great all things considered, but guess there are always limits. However, also agree that Herrmann benefits greatly from re-recordings, you can hear so much more of his unusual orchestral textures - particularly the bass instruments, bassoons and so forth, which are more easily lost in older recordings. Guess that applies equally to 12-Mile Reef as it does to Centre of the Earth. Having said that, my main gripe with the latter are the interpolated songs, which could hopefully be artfully taken out in a new recording (not sure how integrated they in the original written score).

Glad to contribute (with the LLL 25% discount which will doubtless come in handy in... I dunno, November time?), albeit more in a "I would definitely have bought this anyway" kind of way. Given how much it's raised, hope it's not squeezed everyone's pockets too much resulting in the next recording Kickstarter struggling.

Great score and album! My favourite Golden Age composer by far.

Couldn’t agree more but I think Mike M did a phenomenal job on the original recording considering its age and I listen to and thoroughly enjoy the Kritzerland release regularly. It’s one of my very favourite underwater scores and certainly in my top 10 Herrmann.

But to me no composer benefits more from a great sounding re-recording than Herrmann to really revel in the detail of those orchestrations and my top 2 wished for Herrmann re-recordings are ‘Beneath the 12 Mile Reef’ and ‘Journey to the centre of the Earth’. But if they never come I’ll always be grateful for the Gerhardt ‘reef’ suite and the Herrmann conducted ‘Journey’ suite on Phase IV and the fact that such a great job has been done by Mike M on both original recordings.

I was on cruise in the Mediterranean and we were in Rhodes and I'd logged onto the wifi of a cafe while having a drink and I saw an email from, I think, BSX which said "remembering James Horner" which initially I just thought was just a bit of a strange email heading and then I read more... not gonna lie, I cried. I know we'll never quite know how we'll react to things, but it seemed far more of a shock than, say, when Jerry died. Guess the age and manner made it feel all the worse. Anyway, I gave this cheeky little number a spin today... pretty much of a patchwork of 80s Hornerisms without a defining "thing" to make it stand out, but if the worst thing you can say is that it's a patchwork of 80s Hornerisms, it's not so bad.

I'd have to add to the recommendations for the Herrmann and Waxman albums which are both exemplary, but also offer a good mix of well known (Citizen Kane - but not Herrmann's own Welles Raises Kane suite, Gerhardt's represents the score much better with more of the moodier material) but also less well known (White Witch Doctor) selections. Not gonna lie, the Herrmann one makes me hanker for a new recording of Beneath the 12-Mile Reef as the 10 minutes here are superb and the original recording just doesn't do it justice. I would also recommend either of the Korngold ones, although The Sea Hawk collection is the one that gets the most play, although of the above, the Captain Blood album is terrific and features the longer suite from The Sea Hawk than the titular Korngold only collection.

It makes me wonder what Gerhardt might have put on a more general John Williams collection. His three Star Wars albums are great (although not perhaps as good as his golden age ones - indeed my favourite from those is the CE3K suite which is far more interesting and longer than JW's own concert suite). If we assume it would have been in the late 70s/early 80s with no Star Wars, I expect maybe a suite from Jaws, Dracula, the Reivers  and Jane Eyre(Gerhardt included a 5 minute suite of the former on The Prince and the Pauper compilation, albeit only the 2 minute Ride to Thornfield from the latter) maybe a different suite from the Cowboys (i.e. not the Overture)... maybe the theme from Lost in Space, which really could use a good new recording!

I actually thought the opening phrase of the chorus of the Norwegian song sounded like Giacchino's Dr Strange theme before segueing into something else that I can't quite put my finger on. It only sounds like POTC in the sense that it's that kind of syncopated/hornpipe type music, but not much beyond that. I did quite enjoy it though, definitely in the top 5.

Agreed about the British entry's mic being quite low. I'm sure our entries have had higher instances of technical problems (like the singers who were horribly out of tune because they couldn't hear the backing track) than other countries and generally uninteresting staging, as it was this year. It boils down to my earlier comment that we don't go for ridiculous so ours looks kinda tame and boring compared to everyone else - the winning song's staging wasn't exactly the most exciting, but you still remember the waffle iron (as Mel Giedroyc amusingly described it) and her writhing around underneath - we were just hoping the rigging would hold to be fair. However, agree that it wasn't a super memorable song over and above any of the others. I got the feeling that the live audience were willing the Finnish to win, but because the professional votes for Sweden were so much higher so the audience vote wasn't enough to sway it.

    They probably will! ABBAtars.

My other half really likes their new album but it hasn't really grabbed me, although some of the songs are pretty good. Then again, many of the less well known ABBA songs are actually pretty mediocre and take the cheese level to whole new heights. We have the boxed set of all of their original albums but I still mostly listen to ABBA Gold and More ABBA Gold curated as playlists (with a few songs swapped out compared to the actual Gold albums). Then again, one of my favourite ABBA songs is I Am the City, which remained unreleased until years later.

So this was exciting...yesterday night, I was in the mountains in my astro club's dark sky event and to my surprise, I met Tuvok there!  Tim Russ is a huge astro fan too and I spent an hour talking to him about his Star Trek experiences, being in Picard S3, potential future spin offs in the works and having a great time talking about space too in between looking at galaxies, star clusters, dozens of satellites (I counted 22 including a very bright International Space Station that flew directly above), and at least three or four shooting stars.  It was very nice meeting him and finding we shared many common interests including music (he's a musician), astronomy, and all things Trek.  He was also in the Orville and Star Trek Generations.  The topic of music came up as we chatted about astrophotography and some parallels between mixing an audio recording and processing astrophotography.

I can't remember what the other Ben Folds concert coincided with, possibly Songs for Silverman, it was a long time ago! Hope he comes your way at some point.

The last Doyle concert was really good so I'm looking forward to seeing him again (well the orchestra and whoever is conducting it!). Emma Thompson did the monologue from the start of Much Ado live which was a great addition.

I've never seen Doyle live, and Folds only the one time he was in Vienna touring with the Way to Normal album, way back in 2011. He hasn't been here since (I'd love to see him live with an orchestra doing Rock this Bitch). I suppose I should keep an eye on his other tour stops around Austria, but so far I haven't been in the habit of doing a trip abroad just for one concert with no surrounding sightseeing plans. I'm always happy to go back to London, and I've long been wanting to make a trip to Scotland, so Folds/Doyle would have been a nice fit.

(I'm also tempted by Belshazzar's Feast at the Proms - at this point I've pretty much given up expecting it to ever be performed in Vienna again - but that also conflicts with another appointment, and apparently that just went on sale today, so if I ever make up my mind, tickets will probably be long gone by then).
