    Sublime...as always.

This doesn’t get enough love. People are all over Scorsese’s gangster and vulgar hustler films, but I feel his skills really show in films like this and Hugo. The photography is beautiful and helps convey the feeling of repressed desire and societal norms, while the acting is excellent, especially Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer. I didn’t feel Day-Lewis was being method here, he just became the character.

Bernstein’s score is excellent. He even managed to weave in the ondes martenot, subtly but gracefully.

You know what the Klingons call a quarterpounder pounder with cheese, on Quonos? They call it a "ta'pach, ma gogh!"
You mean they don't call it a quarterpounder?
No, man, they use the metric system, they don't know what the fuck a quarterpounder is.

Yes, it is. It's far less "heroic" than AN ARCHITECT'S DREAM, and it functions as both a sort of sigh of relief, that the 'quake is over, and a eulogy for the dead.

As I was fortunate to have had a hand in this release I must say that it was a wonderful achievement that Mike M. was able to convince the maestro to include the various source cues that are featured on this definitive version of the soundtrack.

Even though its probably considered frivolous, I absolutely adore the low-key jazzy lounge music cue "The Promenade Room" which begins in the scene as the Fire Chief comes in to explain to builder Duncan that everyone has to be evacuated. The sequence culminates with a shot of guests dancing and in particular as the music becomes louder, shows the Lisolette and Harlee characters played by Jennifer Jones and Fred Astaire, participating in this bit of pre-disaster fun.

There's just something about this catchy gem that I always appreciated and (after multiple viewings over the years which I have hummed incessantly) was always disappointed it never featured on the original LP or subsequent release, knowing full well it was an original tune by John Williams.

I believe that the source music material adds so much to the overall score.  I hope you all get to enjoy these too.

I love how character based this is. All of our main characters experience an emotional journey and growth in this movie. And do so often by, screwing up initially. There's a lot of false assumptions made by our heroes, who then have to deal with the consequences in this visually splendid space adventure.

Like with Knives Out 2 years later, Rian Johnson plays with perceptions. The perceptions of his audience and of his characters, in a way that doesn't feel cheap or engineering for the sake of the plot.

A few structural issues aside this is an excellent, even daring film that has the balls to question the foundations of the franchise it's build on, and clears the slate to a large extent.

It's a pity many "fans" don't like this approach. They wanna see the stuff they love celebrated, not deconstructed and questioned.

I fear JJ will retcon this film as much as he can for TROS.

Still, easily the best one since 1980, and a film that will be far better regarded 10 years from now

It’s actually one of the most beautiful things we are capable of as Men.

So much of contemporary popular culture seems like a condemnation of that sentiment, to the point that it’s nice to see someone - a female director, of all people - go against it.

I have no option but to wait until a touring cinema called Screen Machine (check it out) comes back to the islands, in February. Either that, or catch an aeroplane to Glasgow, see the film, stay overnight, and return home, the next day. That would cost me anything up to £500.

As one of the tracks that was earmarked as 'damaged' (or sonically challenged) on the previous release, you'll be happy to know that all tracks in this edition sound the best they ever have.

It's a great cue and in a sense a satisfying conclusion to the aftermath of the events in the story.

Bespin if you are asking that question, then you haven't listened to Maurizio's great new interview with Mike Matessino, where all that is answered

    https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2019/12/11/mike-matessino-podcast-disaster-soundtrack-collection/

The short answer (you should listen to the podcast for the full detailed answer!) is that Earthquake is a complete re-recording, done after and separately from the film recording.  JW crafted the album he wanted, but then at the last minute, a producer at the label insisted on adding sound effects, so he added them to the main title and combined some tracks into the medley and put sound effects on that too.  These new constructions were also released as the A and B side of a 45RPM single.

For this release, MM found the clean album master from before that was done, as well as the sound effects versions, so was able to remix the entire album from scratch, and re-create the program JW wanted, which has no sound effects.  Then, he also put the sound effects tracks on the CD right after, since they represent the 45RPM release, but also the individual user can re-create the sound effects version of the album by changing changing the order of tracks in their personal playlist.

The Towering Inferno OST album was not a re-recording.  It was constructed from film recordings.
