The clueless public

I've always found it funny when someone asks me what kind of music I listen to - it always falls into two categories: those who never noticed it but think it's kind of neat, and those who think you're from Mars.

I bring this up because of some comments I got on a video I posted on youtube a while back at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rBwlBJ0-pQ4#GU5U2spHI_4, basically an isolated score of the Doctor Who chase scene. Notice that one guy had never noticed the music before but thought it was 'good', whereas the other person wonders where the words are - misses the point completely IOW.

Just why do you think it is that so many people don't realise movies have music in them?

I think...and I merely think he meant...why don't you put the video WITH the words...and the music I think. Or do it both ways, like music seperate and one with words only? Still uneducated but in a different way. Regardless he doesn't mean the words to the music. :)

I don't know of people who don't know films have music.

Dunno - but watching that vid led me to THIS - which made me chortle a little.... :)

I guess part of the answer will be about how much you are unconsciously affected by such music......is it there to be noticed? Does that stop it affecting you? It's a big subject to be sure.....

I've been doing quite a lot of 'dating' again lately since recently becoming single and the whole "what sort of music are you into?" (a question I'd long forgotten how to handle) is becoming a right royal pain in the arse tbh. Why did I have to be 'blessed' with this fine musical palette O 'Lord?

Anyway I usually answer with "anything catchy really" which is about as bland an answer as one would expect. If I see the girl more than twice and the same awkward (why?) question rears its ugly head (which it sooooo does) I sort of try to break them in easily by saying "I like orchestral (NOT classical, since that would kinda create the wrong impression) stuff too". You gotta understand, young out-going women don't find dudes who like film music to be strangely attractive. Luckily for me I'm pretty clued up with the more conventional musical tastes too, which gets me by up to a point.

Only the full-time girlfriends get to find out about my specialist interest. Which they are always fine about, even appreciative of actually. Most women love film music too. They just don't realise how much until they meet someone like us guys!

True story :)

It's true, sometimes you have to ease into it with new people. Flying your freak flag right from the start might not let them get to know you outside of that context.

They're too busy watching instead of listening? If you aren't familiar with the music in a certain film (or soundtracks in general) at all you'd probably be more prone to hearing it subconsciously.

1. Most people don't notice music in films unless it's something that really stands out.

2. Most people notice the songs and expect soundtracks to be filled with them because they don't expect anyone to like "orchestral music" with the exception of classical.

Many years ago I was browsing thru the soundtracks sections when I overheard some people talking amongst each other, wondering who was performing on the ID4 soundtrack. I just chuckled to myself.

3. Girls, no matter what they look like, like guys who like film music, no matter what they look like. It does help your case if you like other music as well. However it might be in your best interest to get to know someone before you spring something on them they may find strange or geeky.

Sometimes it might help to tell a girl or person that looks at you strangely that film scores are like listening to classical music, in most cases. That's usually followed by an "Oh, ok." You would be suprised at how many women have some sort of orchestral score in their CD collection. More than likely it's a romantic/ love story film score but they do have them. And you would be suprised at the number of women who actually like it once they give it a listen.

Now don't go playing Goldsmith's Planet of The Apes...:) But if you go to a concert for film music I'm sure you will see plenty of women there, enjoying the music. And men as well.

It's Titanic. Fact.

It's not Titanic. Therefore your warning is valid as that would be sexual suicide.

Titanic is one of them. But there are others, my wife had a few other scores when I met her, and it can be a great ice breaker when it comes to telling a girl the majority of your CDs are film scores.

Nice job on that video rich, did you just take that cue off the CD and lay it over? I love that cue, especially the little fanfare when the TARDIS shows up.

Sounds more or less like a kind of 'getting out of the closet' :)

The comparison is, though extreme, not a million miles away from the way it is. For me at least.

These aren't chubby munster women I'm talking about (women like that are grateful for whatever they get) of course.

I'm also a male chauvinist pig.

Titanic is one of them.

The other is very probably Dawson's Creek and the third Sex and the City, which are of course just song compilations with the series' main title - if that - but most of them'll fight you anytime that these are real, serious soundtracks. ROTFLMAO

I've been dating my girlfriend for a little over a year and when I first met her, she didn't own any film scores or was really aware of it. Guess how many scores she owns now? . . . well, still none. BUT I have introduced her to the likes of Williams and she can certainly appreciate him. I've spent most of my time introducing her to my favorite bands (it's a bit easier) and I figure I'll get her into film scores as we go along.

So far she has taken a liking to Hook, Pan's Labyrinth and Battlestar Galactica.

Not a bad start.

It can also be vital to point out that just because you like a certain score, doesn't mean you enjoy the film. That's a common misconception.

Yep.

I have still to listen to 'valley of the dolls' because of that... ROTFLMAO

And many Roque Baños scores come from very crappy movies and or types of films i really dont have any interest in.

That reminds me of one of my friends back in high school said to me in class one day, "I just heard the Independence Day soundtrack the other day, it sucks because there are no songs on it!" I just replied with, "Well duh it's an orchestra only score, numb nuts." Since he knew I was into film score soundtracks.

Indeed! That is very true right there and you're right most girls will end up having a couple of film score soundtracks in their collection.

When I've talked to some girls and I tell them what type of music I like and what I am mostly into they're all, "oh that's cool I like that stuff too".

To which she replies "You're insulting them (her parents) and you're embarrassing me."

To which she'd reply - "I have heard the terrible stories of the evil Zimmer cult...I thought the stories were told to frighten girlfriends. Later, I learned that the Zimmer cult was once real and released unspeakable compositions. I am ashamed of what happened here so many years ago. I can assure you, this will never happen again.....with any potential partner".

Dragonheart supposedly appeals to the ladies.

It appeals to a mainstream crowd that includes an interestingly large portion of women, historically, and it does what it can to salvage the film.

Whenever the "What kind of music are you into?" question arises, I just say "Well, my tastes welcome the gorgeous orchestral flavors of Williams, the experimental rhythms and harmonies of Goldsmith, the lush strings and melodies of Horner, and the dark and brooding psychological powerhouses of Herrmann".

Quite the ice-breaker, if I might say so.

I'd say something like:

I like types of music that are really specialised and might be considered unusual to some people, like film music. So don't ask me who's on top of the charts now.

I usually try to dodge the question (most of the times doing very poorly at it).

My girlfriend has a few soundtracks, though (the LotR OSTs, A Beautiful Mind, the second Matrix album and the ever-present PotC 1). She really liked the music for Mulan, so I gave her the complete score. She was most pleased. :)

Now I must teach her to stop labeling it "Disney" and appreciate the greatness that is Jerry Goldsmith.
