Temple of Doom

Star Wars (Original Release)

Angela's Ashes

A great trio to be sure. I have to admit that I am so used to the RCA release of SW I find it hard to listen to the original album's programme in that form. I remember being scared witless when one of the original tracks had a sudden jarring edit from quiet music to loud and I had been used to the chronological sequence.

Secret fire my ass!

I'll ban your ass Mr.!

I would have to say that it is the best presented SW score though, pretty much every highlight is on there (a few cues aside), also besides some of the jarring source differences, the mixing is better in some places (For example, Tale of a Jedi Knight I think it is, has a more prominent Piano mix)

Hmmm, the tangent this conversation has gone off on...

I blame BB. He is a corrupting influence who brings scary imagery to his posts far too often, literally.

All I wanted to do was do some fanboy gushing over a forgotten JW score (in my book). You couldn't even let me do that! Curses BB!

The Lost World by John Williams

WOW! It's been ages since I last heard this, and can't believe my opinion of the score were so low. There is some truly fantastic action writing here. Definitely one of his most underrated scores.

I actually like Richard think this score is generally quite well liked around here. And it is indeed a bloody fantastic piece of work. Like Jason I would say this is on the top of my complete release wish list. Williams really re-invented the whole JP world musically with this (at Spielberg's suggestion) and did it with such invention and energy.

Around here, sure. But JWFan doesn't really represent the whole of the soundtrack niche. I think most people were disappointed with the score, including me.

Now I realize how wrong we all were.

I will do penance by joining BloodBoal on his pilgrimage to the Himalayas in exile, and forever remain The Merciful One.

No say three Hail Williamses and give alms to the poor and your sin will be washed away. Now go my son. Ego te absolvo. In the name of John, the Williams and the Holy Ghostwriter.

Lady in the Water by James Newton Howard: Another rather magical winner from JNH for another M. Night Shyamaramalamadingdong dud of a film. Strong themes, haunting atmosphere, effective use of minimalism and choral voices and a brilliant spine tingling finale make this both an intelligent and an emotional score. Forget the Ponies and friendship. Lady in the Water is Magic!

It lacks diversity? There are at least 5-6 themes in this score, perhaps even more.

If the original album didn't have that awful transition from the last piece directly into the song, it would have been perfect.

It's not so much the themes, but the overall composition. For example, take Charades and Cereal Boxes. It's basically the same music, only one cue is longer than the other. And with an OST only 40 minutes long, that's a bit of a problem. There a few similar things like that on the album.

As I said, though, it's just "a bit". ;)

But that stuff is my favourite of the score.

Greg Edmonson - Uncharted 3

Holy hell! I had never even heard of this score or it's composer until MV posted a low stock alert, which I mentioned here and then Koray linked me to a youtube video of the entire 2CD set. I listened to it and was blown away by how good the score is! It's like a perfect blend of the classic powerhouse orchestral score with some modern ideas, mainly in the percussion and ethnic sounds. I will be picking up the physical CD set for sure!

Michael Giacchino - Star Trek

Hadn't listened to this score in a while. I listened to the OST, since that is all that's on Spotify. (YAY for Varese titles finally showing up there!!) Still a great score with great themes, and as short as the OST is, it covers the highlights of the score better than the STID OST does. Though my favorite track will always be Chutes and Matter

Brian Tyler - Now You See Me (Complete)

Still lovin' it

You're welcome ;)

The two previous scores are good too but 3 is definitely the best. Edmonson did the music for Firefly.

The scores are definitive among the main strengths of the Uncharted series. 3 works rather well on album, too, where 2 was still too disjointed for my taste.

Whispers in the Dark - Thomas Newman

I have no idea what the movie wants to convey, in any case it prompted Thomas Newman to write a mostly feathery piano and strings/woodwinds score recalling FRIED GREEN TOMATOES up to ANGELS IN AMERICA (even his recent Disney-picture is strikingly similar, sadly) that pleasantly kills the time. The percussive travel montages sound like they could come from a 2013 feature, testament to the viability of Newman's very own style. The spare intrusions of dissonance seem to come randomly and don't really register beyond all the lightweight americana stuff. It's not anything overly substantial but since i dig Newman i will thank Intrada for rescuing this (it's certainly better than some of TN's released scores...and i'm not talking about SKYFALL).

PS: the soundclips for Alexandre Desplat's MONUMENTS MEN betray a surprisingly animated and pleasantly old-fashioned scoring approach. Not much minimalist stuff in this one.

Sounds nice! Desplat is doing some really good stuff for Clooney.

I agree. Sounds like it is going to be quite a fun score. :)

Medal of Honour: European Assault by Christopher Lennertz

The Book Thief by John Williams

A.I. - Artificial Intelligence (Oscar Promo expanded thingy) by John Williams: Such a brilliant score. Just about every track is a highlight on this one. David and the Supermecha (or Specialist Visits) is among my all time favourite Williams pieces. That harp duet followed by the cello solo with string accompaniment performing the Blue Fairy Theme are simply and utterly sublime.
