What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)

You really should take a listen! I did a glowing review of it in the Reviews section a good while ago. And I still stick to my verdict. Excellent score.

Wonderful score, but a tedious, leaden film. Shymalenonanon desperately trying to be Spielberg in CE3K-mode but falling on his face.

what utter bullshit. Right up there with those idiots who can't get past the water conundrum.

Yes, I've been eagerly looking forward to the score actually! Conrad Pope's music is often great and stands testament to the fact that he needs to score more films.

Vermeer's theme sounds exquisite, and very European. It's already out in Europe, but we have to wait till the 28th to get the score here :(

I think it might end up in my top 10 2013 scores.

Suite from Memoirs of a Geisha for Cello and Orchestra by John Williams

Ahh, to hear film music expand into something so much more. Few can do it like the maestro can. Simply sublime.

Truly a masterful and beautiful work and as some have mentioned almost like another cello concerto in a way.

It's really become one of my personal favourite pieces from the maestro's pen. It already takes the great thematic material and musical colours from the original scores and allows it to blossom into this wonderful piece that plays out very much like a cello concerto as you say. What I'm especially fond of is how the ethnic elements are translated into an orchestral setting.

And that final movement is phenomenal!

I would love to hear this play live someday. Is the piece still performed in concerts?

I dont' remember any other performances of it being reported than the premiere with the CSO with Yo-Yo Ma and Williams conducting (which is the performance that was recorded and released). Perhaps we should consult Miguel on this point. He is the veritable John Williams encyclopedia. :)

I just wish he would've somehow incorporate As The Water and Destiny's Path into the suite

I wager that expanded As the Water would have been sublime! One can only dream.

Schindler's List by John Williams

Say what you will about the score but I still think its one of his best and one of my personal favourites. I know pub is going to murder me for this, but this is indeed a masterpiece.

It is absolutely sublime. I could go on and on talking about what I find so beautiful about this score

Hook

It's been a while.

A masterpiece. I love all the action music, etc but the music in England before they leave for Neverland is just magical. Every time I listen, I'm surprised by how great it is.

It also accompanies the best section of the movie :) I love the music when Peter enters the nursery and sees the mural with the pirates. It's just so absolutely evocative. In that moment, that fantasy world feels infinite

The Lost World by John Williams

WOW! It's been ages since I last heard this, and can't believe my opinion of the score were so low. There is some truly fantastic action writing here. Definitely one of his most underrated scores.

"Low" opinions? Not me, K.K.

"TLW" is better composed, better played, and better recorded. It's the "Jaws 2" of Jurassic Park scores.

Oh, mind you, I was referring to myself alone. I heard this score last, years ago, and I never thought highly of the score for some reason, probably because of the mass' disappointment with it, or the lack of stronger thematic material (or the reprisal of the original material).

But hearing it now, its bloody brilliant! It's a different beast altogether, and like you say, the Jaws 2 of the Jurassic Park franchise. I love Williams in super hyperactive mode! The action writing is just phenomenal! It was hard avoiding the temptation to get my head to stop moving, or my hands to stop air-conducting (which would be rather embarrassing considering I'm in the library right now). What a treat it would be to hear some of these cues performed live!

I haven't enjoyed a good action score like that in a long time.

It's like I'm hearing this score for the first time! I suppose it speaks for my change in tastes for music these days.

Sorry to do this to you, K.K., but I'm about to make you insanely jealous. I have heard it live. On July 1-4, 1998, JW gave 4 concerts at The Barbican (2 sets of 2) with the LSO, and he started set 1 with "The Lost World".

Emotionally it still hits me like no other score and sounds quite unique in Williams' ouvre. Stylistically it is a surprising departure for him I feel and has not done something quite like it since.

It also accompanies the best section of the movie :) I love the music when Peter enters the nursery and sees the mural with the pirates. It's just so absolutely evocative. In that moment, that fantasy world feels infinite

That particular cue was one of my favourites and I am so happy it was included on the LLL release of the score. Such a short but a powerful and indeed evocative of the whole feel of the film and moment. Still my no 1 nostalgia score.

I actually like Richard think this score is generally quite well liked around here. And it is indeed a bloody fantastic piece of work. Like Jason I would say this is on the top of my complete release wish list. Williams really re-invented the whole JP world musically with this (at Spielberg's suggestion) and did it with such invention and energy.

There's a subdued wistfulness that is unique to the early music. There's a healthy amount of foreshadowing, not least of which the moment you mentioned, but it also captures the gentle tone of the England scenes. Hook is in every way emblematic of childhood and that material invokes a kind of dreaminess that's a tad bittersweet.

The Lost World sounds very cool live with its alternate opening and closing sections. Powerhouse thunderous stuff.

It's definitely a favourite of mine, and always been. When it first came out, I actually thought it was the best score of all time.

I wouldn't go that far. I adore both, and I love the JP recording and performance. Woodwinds!

When it first came out I was disappointed there was no Jurassic Park fanfare on it. Not a lot, anyway. But, at the same time, loved the dark and brooding tone. And percussion!

It was my first JW score album. I had a compilation or two before, but that was the first proper one.

Heh we have had the same experience then. Although TLW was my first CD coupled with The Schindler's List.

Oh then my first JW score is definitely JP. I copied it off my cousin's CD and wore the tape out. I can tell you that it was frustrating to have the score on a 60 minute casette and to have it cut off in the middle of The T-Rex Rescue and the Finale. ;)

Ha ha! Yeah, I remember those dark times. My first soundtrack was copied too - it was The Lion King, of all things. Still the best Hans Zimmer ever and not only because of the sentimental factor.

What? I was foolish and still unlearned in the ways of the world. How was I to know that tapes came with different running times? :P
