What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)

PS: the soundclips for Alexandre Desplat's MONUMENTS MEN betray a surprisingly animated and pleasantly old-fashioned scoring approach. Not much minimalist stuff in this one.

Sounds nice! Desplat is doing some really good stuff for Clooney.

Karol

I agree. Sounds like it is going to be quite a fun score. :)

Medal of Honour: European Assault by Christopher Lennertz

The Book Thief by John Williams

A.I. - Artificial Intelligence (Oscar Promo expanded thingy) by John Williams: Such a brilliant score. Just about every track is a highlight on this one. David and the Supermecha (or Specialist Visits) is among my all time favourite Williams pieces. That harp duet followed by the cello solo with string accompaniment performing the Blue Fairy Theme are simply and utterly sublime.

Oscar promo expanded thingy, eh? Color me intrigued.

It's a 2-disc set, that features most of the music from "A.I.", including the Der Rosenkavalier stuff from Rouge City. It doesn't, however, have the "Dr. Know" stuff (yah boo sucks!!!) or the piece just afterwards. Still good, though. Worth checking out.

Has it got the amphibicopter cue?

You mean the techno-beat stuff? Nope. Only Williams' score. That amphibicopter piece was I think composed by Joseph Williams. Or that would be my best guess at the moment.

No, I mean when the amphibicopter flies over submerged Manhattan. It's a Williams piece with quartal chords in brass.

Is that not The Mecha World, which starts when the amphibiocpter takes off for Manhattan?

http://youtu.be/YLXAj7BpaiI

(On a side note, every excuse is good to share this track. Probably the best single pieces of film music John Williams has penned in the 21st Century)

A wonderful cue Karol, but that's not it. I remember the cue I'm looking for was on one of the old complete score bootlegs, and was a lousy DVD rip with sound fx. I believe it's for when Gigolo Joe is captured.

I believe it's called '6M6 Floating Downwards.'

Stored Memories and Monica's Theme beats it!

I don't know why I've never looked into whether or not there was more of this score available than on the original release. I just assumed there wasn't.

If you mean that menacing low brass music that plays right before the techno stuff in the film, then I think the track on promo is Neither Flesh Nor Blood.

But then again, that might not be it.

EDIT: According to this, that scene has been tracked with some material from Moon Rising cue.

For me this is how the top 5 look like:

1: Angela's Ashes
2: Superman: The Movie
3: The Empire Strikes Back
4: The Temple of Doom
5: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

It's John's best score if you ask me.

This. Though sometimes it switches places with CE3K.

1. A.I.: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

2. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

3. E.T.

4. JURASSIC PARK

5. EMPIRE OF THE SUN (Which can also switch with NIXON, RETURN OF THE JEDI, LAST CRUSADE, IMAGES or THE FURY).

I don't know the AI score, and I really should. That cue above was very good.

It might be one his most interesting works ever - very eclectic. In an almost Kubrick kind of way. It's a score of contradictions - on one hand you get several cold s-f cues that might alienate you, on the other - some of the warmest things John has ever written. All in all, very much out of his comfort zone. Check this out Quint (especially the stuff starting after 2:00 mark):

I'd absolutely love to hear an extended suite from this, the kind of his did for Geisha. Including The Mecha World, Abandoned in the Woods, Cybertronics, Hide and Seek, Search for the Blue Fairy, Monica's Theme (or maybe some other configuration).

IMHO Starting from when the brass started sounding "thinner" and less "fat" (as in Star Wars vs. ESB/ROTJ) to now (though you could start from the 90's)

I have to track down the extended/promo score or whatever. But on the original album, properly chronologically ordered, the sequence of Replicas, The Search For The Blue Fairy, Stored Memories and Monica's Theme, and The Reunion is just unmatched.

The promo contains about 50 minutes of additional music. But sequenced in a very strange way - the first disc is basically the soundtrack album, the second one - has all the other stuff. Requires a lot of re-arrangement to make any sense out of it.

I'd definitely pay to see that thing complete and chronological.

EDIT: It's time to post the scoring featurette - let Williams speak about his own work:

Isn't more that more the period when ambient miking started to take over the reigns from close miking (at least from what I've read re: the changes between SW and ESB)? I don't think you can chalk that down to digital recording or mastering

More modern condenser microphones and less and less use of the old RCA Ribbons might explain it better as well, particularly for the brass.

But yeah, in short I prefer the 80s/90s Williams in general, with A.I. being something of a holdover from the 90s. I love the early 80s sound in general - Jerry Goldsmith's OMEN 3: THE FINAL CONFLICT being a great example.

That is unlike anything I've heard from John before, and if it wasn't for the signature harmonic strings in the background I might have mistaken it for Ennio Morricone.

Undecided as to whether I like it or not, though. But that's probably just an unfamiliarity thing.

Now listening to Shark's suggestion.

There are 2 versions of "The Mecha World". I prefer the film version, which is probably the one that you mean. It also differs when David destroys "David".

CE3K is a close second for me. The amount of intimate emotion in AI puts it over the edge.

Pil, Sharkey; listen up, 'cause I'm only going to say this once: "CE3K" is second to ABSOLUTELY NO score, get that???!!!!!!
