#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,141 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Now that's an infectious theme!
Sir Hilary Bray 235 Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Princess Leia's theme. For a little while.
Richard P 5,234 Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 The theme in the second half of Two New Alphas from HTTYD 2.
Xander Harris 9,526 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The Borg theme as played by the brass all throughout The Dish. It's distinctly Goldsmith.
Naïve Old Fart 12,865 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Main Title from Young Sherlock Holmes.A lovely theme, if ever there was one, and on which subject: what is the fluttering noise heard all through the main and end titles, and how is it achieved?I, Robot (what the hell. . . ?).It's always fun to see a thread kick off that you know is destined to last a long, long time (a la the Last Movie You Watched and such).I prefer "Eye In The Sky", myself."Journey of the Sorceror" by The EaglesIt's both a melody and a film theme.Remember: it was a TV theme waaaaay before it was a movie theme.
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Main Title from Young Sherlock Holmes.A lovely theme, if ever there was one, and on which subject: what is the fluttering noise heard all through the main and end titles, and how is it achieved? All of the strings (26 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos and 6 basses) are instructed to tap the bodies of their instruments with their knuckles. The violins start off first, then the violas etc. so the sound gradually becomes bassier.
Naïve Old Fart 12,865 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Thanks for that, Sharky. Is there a proper musical term for this?
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Like 'tap body of the instrument with knuckles?' It falls under the umbrella of 'extended techniques', pioneered by the 60s avant-garde composers like Penderecki and Takemitsu. Some composers use little symbols (borrowed from graphic notation) for these things, but that usually makes it needlessly convoluted, since the players need to memorise a key. Best to just describe it.Here's Williams using the same technique back in 73. Only 3 basses this time, so a much smaller sound. 0:54
Hlao-roo 390 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 "Vianne Sets Up Shop" from Rachel Portman's Chocolat.
nightscape94 968 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I, Robot (what the hell. . . ?).It's always fun to see a thread kick off that you know is destined to last a long, long time (a la the Last Movie You Watched and such).I prefer "Eye In The Sky", myself.Don't pass over The Turn of a Friendly Card. Classic APP.
Sir Hilary Bray 235 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 seemed to wake with a small section of "1941" in my head sort of repeating itself. Hellcats Over Hollywood track
Uni 307 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 "Ride to Fort Hays" from Dances With Wolves.Main Title from Young Sherlock Holmes.A lovely theme, if ever there was one, and on which subject: what is the fluttering noise heard all through the main and end titles, and how is it achieved? All of the strings (26 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos and 6 basses) are instructed to tap the bodies of their instruments with their knuckles. The violins start off first, then the violas etc. so the sound gradually becomes bassier.Interesting. Was this aleatory, or was it notated to a specific tempo and/or tone?

Aleatory, starting slowly then increasing in speed to As Fast As Possible. Each section enters an 8th note rest at a time.
crocodile 9,626 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Oh thanks for that. I was actually wondering the other week while listening to it.Karol
Richard P 5,234 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 The wonderful viola work in the latter half of The Vote. (The Village)
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Doyle's Thor theme. Mike, don't tell me you like that shit?
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 The rift between us widens. I think it's a nice tune, and Tyler's sequel score made me long for Doyle. Is he in your David Arnold category?

KK 3,310 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Agreed (IF I had a David Arnold category). I find him overrated, and don't enjoy many of his recent scores.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,141 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Agreed (IF I had a John Williams category). I find him overrated, and don't enjoy many of his recent scores.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I'm not really familiar with his work beyond HP4, Thor and the other Branagh scores, all of which I like.
Xander Harris 9,526 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 The Nemesis and Executive Decision themes from the chase in Odds and Ends.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 In honor of Willie, Short Round, and Dr. Jones and their 30th anniversary this Friday, well you guessed it.
Uni 307 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 The theme from The Last Starfighter. I can never get enough of that one. . . .
Uni 307 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Was "Craig Safan" Zimmer's nom de baton in the 80s. . . ?
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Zimmer wrote the theme from CHEERS? I thought this was more his style. Yeah, Zimmer actually wrote that.
Uni 307 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 "Hilly's Theme" from Silver Streak. (I swear I heard it on someone's cell phone in the hall just now—but who the hell would have that on their phone?!)

Naïve Old Fart 12,865 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 "The Cloud" from "ST:TMP".oddly enough, the 4-note motif sounds like both "The Fury", and "Vertigo".
crocodile 9,626 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Dead Again is a really decent score.Anyway, it's Stargate theme is stuck in my head. Which, in all honesty, isn't very good.Karol
Uni 307 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 "Introducing Aurelia" from Love, Actually. A lot of emotionally uplifting power in what boils down to a very simple score.Anyway, it's Stargate theme is stuck in my head. Which, in all honesty, isn't very good.Nope. Can't go with you on that one.
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Anyway, it's Stargate theme is stuck in my head. Which, in all honesty, isn't very good. The David Arnold theme? If so, I agree!
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Naaaaaaa, na na na na naaa....Me too now.
