#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
The Jaws OST sounds fine, but the Decca release lacked punch and suffered from excessive noise reduction
Unlucky Bastard 7,782
From a video perspective, that's like what they did to Predator on blu-ray. They took an existing HD master and put it through a wax machine and people thought it looked "clearer".

Amer 2,119
I can tell there was indeed SO MUCH base. One of my low end players which barely yielded sub woofer type LFE was suddenly booming with normal bass when I played the Decca cd.
publicist 4,643
The Decca sounds as if a kid just discovered the graphic equalizer and played hell with the sliders. The old MCA released in 1992 also sounds suspiciously like unnecessary reverb was added (though i never listened to the LP). While the recording probably never was the best and in no way is reference material in any of the old releases, this new mix really brings out new instrumental clarity and a more spacious stereo field. crocodile 8,020
Lots of "film versions" by the looks of this tracklist. Looks like there still might be music missing. Why didn't they include the film version of Father and Son for instance?I don't understand what you're saying here.... the set is 100% complete. There isn't a note of music in the film that isn't on the set.Well, if you don't count some source music. Like with A.I.Karol

Bespin 8,484
Whats your beef against limited editions?Few month ago, I decided myself to bought 3-4 CD from Intrada or FSM, I don't recall... and 3 out of the 4 CD I wanted where already sold out. I bought CD by waves, rarely one by one when they comes out. So "Limited Editions" are a problem for me.Does that prevent me from listening to these releases? The honest answer is NO.I usually pay for all the music I listen, when it's possible. But sometimes, it's not possible. That's life!

Popular Post Jay 37,374
I think in order to clear up any questions about the sound quality and material used I'll just summarize the great story you can read in the booklet.Basically when they made the film in 1975 they knew it would have a mono sound mix. They didn't record the score in stereo, but not just mono either; They recorded it as 3 tracks. But it wasn't the traditional 3-track structure (left, center, right) that would become the standard, but rather.... something else. Basically each track had a different grouping of instruments. Combine them all and you get a mono mix, but raise or lower the volume of one piece to sort up emphasize one instrument group over another.Since it was decided to record an LP program from scratch rather than use any of the film recordings, they basically sat in a vault for 25 years once the mono mix of the film was done!Cut to 2000, when Universal decided that they wanted to give the film a new 5.1 mix for its DVD and a theatrical re-release. Remember, the film had only been available on mono all this time up until then! So, the film recordings of the score were taken out of the vault for the first time in 25 years, and it was discovered they were deteriorating / damaged! They were transferred to digital and a slew of engineers worked on getting them ready for the film. In cases where the correct film takes were badly damaged, rather than spending the enormous time and effort that would be needed to restore them (and frankly, the technology to do so might not have existed at the time!), in spots the team chose to actually use a different take than the one that had been selected for the film, simply because it was less damaged! So for 15 years now, if you've watch the 5.1 mix rather than the original mono, you've actually been watching a version of the film with different takes of music used in spots than the original 1975 mono mix! Likewise, the Decca CD uses all the same wrong takes as the 5.1 mix! This is because when it was decided to release the film tracks on CD, they simply took the 5.1 mixes of the music and folded them down to stereo, adding reverb and other trickery to make them sound more stereo-ish (when they really weren't!) So for 15 years, we've also been listening to some wrong takes on CD!The best example of this is Man Against Beast, the 5 1/2 minute centerpiece cue of the score. The 1975 film used Take 6 of that cue (with a brief section replaced by its equivalent section from Take 5). The 2000 5.1 mix (and therefore Decca CD) simply used Take 5 in its entirety, because it was less damaged than Take 6! For the new Intrada, Mike Matessino worked tireless to fix all the damage to Take 6 and presents it for the first time on CD on disc 1 of the set (with the proper section from Take 5 to match what was done for the film). And if you want to hear Take 5 like you're used to on the Decca, that's hear too in the bonus tracks area (though he replaced a few sections with interesting instrumentation differences from other takes so we get to hear that for the first time too!)So throughout the main program, on the new set you'll hear the correct takes chosen in 1975 throughout, some for the first time! Mike Matessino worked tireless to ensure every single correct film take was used. And while listening to the other takes, he made sure to put all the interesting ones that offer differences into the bonus tracks area.So hopefully that explains the "film version" monikers in the main program. Those are when the Decca actually presented alternate takes rather than the takes used is the film. Now, we get the proper film takes for every cue in the entire score. This is just a tiny example of the plethora of cool stories you'll read in the generous 32 page booklet that comes with this release! The story of how Mike Matessino figured out how to properly take the 3-track elements (which btw were freshly transferred to digital for this release; They didn't use the 2000 digital transfer) and convert them to stereo is my favorite! A24 4,346
The old MCA released in 1992 also sounds suspiciously like unnecessary reverb was added (though i never listened to the LP). While the recording probably never was the best and in no way is reference material in any of the old releases, this new mix really brings out new instrumental clarity and a more spacious stereo field. Are you talking about OST rerecording? The CD does sound reverb-ish. Are you saying that the new MCA original OST sounds drier? I'm asking because I can't listen to the clips.
