Popular Post Tydirium 1,167
I've said it before and I'll say it again: These two themes are some of my favorite themes I've heard from JW in years. Ever since I first heard the Victory Theme (via the trumpet rendition in the FYC track of "Approaching the Throne"), I've been hooked. And "We Go Together" was only track 3 on the FYC, but even on my first listen-through of the album, I had to put it on repeat a few times before moving onto track 4—the theme was just so good. Couldn't be any happier than to get both these themes packaged in one arrangement. I know many people here are deeply in love with "Rey's Theme" (also a great one, don't get me wrong), but this one knocks that out of the water, for me. Jay 37,364
Rey's Theme gets so many more variations throughout the trilogy than either of these new themes gets in this movie though. Even within any one film, Rey's Theme gets more interesting variations
Tydirium 1,167
But that doesn't make the underlying theme inherently better, to me. Rey's Theme gets more variations because its a main character theme and has been around two movies longer. A lesser (in my opinion, don't hate) theme getting more variations, doesn't make the theme itself better, for me at least. It just makes me wish the Victory Theme/We Go Together got more variations instead/as well, lol. Maybe a bit extreme but, for example, I'd rather hear virtually any Williams theme without any variations, than 50 variations on a Giacchino theme. The point being, if I don't necessarily love a theme to begin with, no amount of variations is going to save it. (Again, I'm speaking at an extreme; I actually quite like Rey's Theme and I enjoy its many variations. I just like the two new TROS themes better!) Popular Post mrbellamy 6,287
I love the timpani roll/hit at 1:18 when the Friendship theme drops down in the second phrase....it's just a simple fill but somehow always sticks out to me. Tydirium 1,167
Yes, one of my favorite spots! Another great timpani hit moment is 2:29 (on beat 2 of the bar) in "They Will Come".
p0llux 398
I really liked the soft brass stabs in this rendition of the victory theme. Too bad it was only for a few bars. _deleted_ and Will

Jurassic Shark 12,076
I've now listened to it three times. I'm considering to listen a fourth time as well. I'll let you all know if I do.

Tydirium 1,167
I just checked out of curiosity; according to iTunes, I've now listened to this track 30x. My most-listened track of TROS. (Second is "They Will Come", which I also attribute to my love of the Victory Theme.)

Tydirium 1,167
Eh... I might actually be inclined to agree. Or at least I'll go so far as to say I think it's probably my favorite track out of the sequel scores. Can't express just how much I love this one. _deleted_ and Cerebral Cortex

Datameister 2,043
Twice so far for me...I was late to the TROS game, and I tend to space out my listens anyway. I quite like this theme and I think it serves the film well. It hasn't captivated me the way it has for some of you, but I do think it has a rather Giacchino-esque beauty. _deleted_

Datameister 2,043
You guys don't hear it? Don't get me wrong, it sounds like it was written by Williams, and I certainly didn't intend to accuse him of lifting material from Giacchino, but I hear some definite similarities in the approach. I'm talking about pieces like "Labor of Love", "Your Father Would Be Proud", "Parting Words", etc. You've got 4/4 meter with chord changes at the start of each measure...heavy reliance on simple, steady quarter note rhythms in the melody, often ending phrases with longer notes...overall major tonality with strategically placed minor chords to add emotional richness or bittersweetness... (I didn't fully think through all those exact similarities till now; it was just a "feel" thing, but I think it stands up to objective analysis.) _deleted_ and Not Mr. Big
Not Mr. Big 4,639
It's a great theme that sounds like Giacchino. The closet the series has gotten to wholesome major key music since A New Hope _deleted_ and Taikomochi

Tydirium 1,167
Huh. I guess I see in a way what you guys are talking about, but it still seems way better and fresher than Giacchino's writing. It's funny that this comparison is being made, because I tend to be not the biggest Giacchino fan.

Popular Post Cerebral Cortex 3,357
Months later, I will continue to join others here in singing praises towards this track and the themes therein. Growing up during my early childhood, I was always most adoring (without really realizing it at the time) of the Williams music that provided both a sense of warmth/comfort while also playing to some sort of fantastical grandeur. As a little kid, I had stuff like Harry's Wondrous World playing on loop a lot on my old MP3 player for this very reason. Tracks like these always gave me a sense of calm and the feeling that all was well no matter what was happening around me, and I treasured the feeling such tracks gave me. It didn't matter what was wrong with the world as long as I had Mr. Williams and his music to whisk me away to another world. It just so happened that, as I grew up and ventured on into adulthood, any new Williams music that came my way, despite continuing to enthrall me as much as any other new musical work, never really gave me that exact same feeling or provided that same sort of comfort as I had felt way back when - which was fine! It wasn't a feeling that I was particularly looking to experience again, nor one that I even realized I missed or even one that I remembered exactly how it felt - until hearing this track. There is a warmth and comfort that washes over me when I listen to this track, specifically the friendship theme, that I can say beyond a doubt that I have not felt since I was a kid. I didn't think I was really capable of having that sort of feeling again outside the confines of childhood, and to be able to be gifted with it again now as a full-fledged adult, especially right now, is truly a wondrous feeling.
