Jay 37,421
COLD MOUNTAIN (EXPANDED) Reference: MBR-185 Music Composed by Gabriel Yared Music Box Records - Limited Edition of 1000 units A 2-CD set. Newly remastered and expanded edition. 16-page CD booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger. In collaboration with Warner Chappell Music and Miramax, Music Box Records proudly presents the remastered and expanded edition of Gabriel Yared’s score to the 2003 epic period war film Cold Mountain, starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Renée Zellweger, and directed by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley). Nominated for seven Academy Awards (including Best Original Score and Best Supporting Actress), this wartime romantic drama is based on Charles Frazier's novel. At the dawn of the Civil War, the men of Cold Mountain, North Carolina, rush to join the Confederate Army. Ada Monroe (Kidman) has vowed to wait for William Inman (Law), but as the war drags on and letters go unanswered, she must find the will to survive, and Inman the courage to endure the savage odyssey of a war-torn way back home to Ada’s arms. After the epic, lush romanticism of his Oscar winning score to The English Patient, Gabriel Yared’s Oscar-nominated Cold Mountain took a more introspective and melancholy approach for its characters’ emotional and physical journeys. While his haunting orchestral emotion remains, the memorable themes of Cold Mountain would center on piano and strings, conveying an unbreakable longing between two lovers who only shared a kiss before parting, but now are bound to be together. From the suspenseful build to a catastrophic explosion to the poignant melody of a last embrace, Yared’s score is a towering, poignant achievement in the composer’s work with Anthony Minghella that remains movie score romantic favorite. Supervised by Gabriel Yared, the program has been assembled and remastered from the recording session elements. Disc 1 ("The Film Score') presents the film version of the cues in chronological order. Disc 2 (''The 2003 Promotional Album & Bonus Tracks'') presents the original Academy Awards promo album that features numerous variations, also including unused tracks and alternate material. The CD comes with a 16-page booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, discussing the film and the score including new comments by Gabriel Yared and film editor Walter Murch on their collaboration with Anthony Minghella. The release is limited to 1000 units. DISC 1 - THE FILM SCORE: 1. Opening (1:26) 2. Preparing for Battle (4:39) 3. Arrival at Cold Mountain / The Hospital (1:42) 4. bruce marshall 1,318
This reminds me of A.I. I had the FYC before the official expansion. Love the score but don't know if I will double dip. Too bad they didn't include the great song from the ost.

Edmilson 7,505
Fine score, although I think Zimmer's The Last Samurai should've got the nomination in 2003 instead of Yared. Lockdown, Jurassic Shark and bruce marshall 2

Oh, definitely, but Yared was still riding high from the ENGLISH PATIENT/THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY success at that time, so I'm not surprised he was nominated. It's an OK score, but somewhat overrated. At least back then. Edmilson and bruce marshall 1

In fact, last year's A LIFE AHEAD (the Sophia Loren Netflix movie) was a highlight; a runner-up in my list. JUDY and THE PROMISE were also good in the last couple of years. bruce marshall 1,318
He hasn't been on my radar for this past decade. Not sure why. He became less interesting as he moved toward a strictly symphonic style. But, I haven't seen many films he has scored .
Thor 7,558
Interestingly, I like quite a bit of his early efforts (BETTY BLUE, L'AMANT, CAMILLE CLAUDEL, MAP OF THE HUMAN HEART), but then came "off" him during his most successful period, and was then re-interested again with BREAKING AND ENTERING in 2006 (collaborating with one of my favourite electronica bands Underworld), as well as DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN. After that, I've tended to check out everything he does. Sometimes it's interesting, sometimes it's not. Hit and miss, as I said. For example, I'm not too thrilled with his Xavier Dolan collabs, but loved THE PROMISE and JUDY inbetween those. That's basically my Yared history, very briefly. 1977 1,743
I only have Message in a Bottle, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Betty Blue and Amelia. Oh and City of Angels (with songs). The latter is the only one I've listened to, and it's quite pleasant.

Thor 7,558
I struggled with TOM AT THE FARM myself, both the film and the score. Felt rather static. But I love some of Dolan's other work, primarily LAURENCE ANYWAYS.

Richard Penna 3,715
I only have one full, legit album from Yared, 1408 (the other one is part of the Cold Mountain promo) which is a perfectly pleasant listen. Other than that, and the odd track from his rejected Troy score, he's not on my radar. I guess I'll pick this up from Intrada when they get it in stock, along with WotW.
