I couldn't agree more. The first time I heard it was as a re-recording on a Silva Screen Records compilation CD back in the mid-90s, and I instantly fell in love. It could've carried the scene just fine, but it's hard to deny the power of Nessun dorma. Oh well, it's the director that got the final word.
