Seen most of those. I have NOT seen:

A Hard Day's Night

Belle de Jour

Pixote

Jean Dielman

Paris is Burning (although I've seen the old film by almost the same name, scored by Maurice Jarre)

A Man Escaped

Vagabond

Bringing Up Baby

The Rules of the Game

A pretty good list of the classics, and a few unexpected surprises along the way, but also fairly predictable.

I'm missing a lot more here than on the Sight & Sound list. The ones I haven't seen are

  • A Hard Day's Night
  • Toy Story
  • Pink Flamingos
  • Malcolm X
  • Natural Born Killers
  • Pixote
  • Waiting for Guffman
  • Goldfinger
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • My Best Friend's Wedding
  • Paris Is Burning
  • Shoah

There's a chance that I've seen Goldfinger, but I don't know the difference between all those old Bond films. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, on the other hand, I definitely have seen, but so long ago my memory of it has almost entirely disintegrated.

A list that put E.T. as the 58th best movies of all time is IMO a pure joke.

My list doesn't have E.T. as the 58th best, so hopefully is okay!

It's a meeting of the classics that have to be on any prestigeous list plus a few controversial (or straight out moronic) picks. No recent masterpieces such as Call Me by Your Name, The Power of the Dog, Sicario, Lost Highway or Heat, for example, made the list.

One of the biggest offenders certainly is 12 Years a Slave - there are few to no other movies that water down the topics of slavery and racism as much as this Oscar bait. If you want to see a movie that is not only radical, but also offers a congenial essay on the bigoted dressing up of humanitarian cruelties during slavery and shows no mercy to a white audience, then watch Django Unchained - should have been on that list.

I will never understand why the Godfather movies (both part 1 and part 2) are so much revered. They are surely good movies, but I don't see what makes them so exceptionally great that they always end up on everybody's short list of the best movies ever. Same for Citizen Kane.

Now, Mulholland Drive should definitely be on any list of best movies. Truly a masterpiece in every sector, and one of the most original movies I've ever seen. I haven't seen Blue Velvet, though -  a hole that I will try to fill as soon as possible.

I can understand what you mean regarding the first Godfather movie. I'd argue that the second Godfather movie deserves the high rankings it often gets.

Have you seen Lost Highway? In my opinion, this is his masterpiece and I'm mesmerized about the fact that it got so overlooked next to Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive (which would have deserved a spot on this list as well).

As a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan, I'm of course not really surprised about Psycho being the number one spot, however, I'd really prefer Vertigo or Rear Window to be ranked above it, now and then.

No, I haven't. I've discovered Lynch very recently with Mulholland Drive, and I'm currently going through Twin Peaks. Lost Highway will join my to-watch-soon list together with Blue Velvet, thanks for the suggestion.

I saw Alien, Toy Story, Bridesmaids, The Shining, The Dark Knight, Goldfinger, My Neighbor Totoro, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bambi, Dazed and Confused, ET, The General, Titanic, Moonlight, Fargo, On the Waterfront, Silence of the Lambs, Vertigo, Empire Strikes Back, Blue Velvet, Casablanca, Goodfellas, Saving Private Ryan, It’s a wonderful Life, Pulp Fiction, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, the Wizard of Oz, and Psycho.  Most of them, I think, are really good.  There are a few I wouldn’t watch again if you paid me, but that’s the way it is with these lists!
