Which do you consider to be Williams' Masterpieces?

Well i hope this is not more of the same...

I mean, you can say a masterpiece, but it doenst have to be one of your favorites scores. This is not meant to be a rated list, and you can put any number of them (saying 'all' is not allowed ;) ) No need to give any reasons, but they are not unwelcomed.

Mine are (well, not mine but Williams 8O ) :

Jaws

Star Wars

Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

Superman - The Movie

The Empire Strikes Back

Raiders of the Lost Ark

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Return of the Jedi

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Hook

The Phantom Menace

Artificial Intelligence

Is just a bit to hard to say if they are absolute masterpieces. Time will tell. Personally, I have an hard time making this type of lists, so I'll just bring the two works that, at least for me, are a league of their own:

Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Certainly ET, and I would put the Trumpet Concerto in this category too (though I am biased!).

Temple of Doom belongs here too, as does the original Star Wars......Close Encounters also......and may I venture War of the Worlds? I know that's going to be a controversial one!

Everything he's done!

Doesn't saying that every score Williams has written is a masterpiece somewhat dilute the meaning of the word 'Masterpiece'.

Anyhoo... my list.

Jaws

Star Wars

Close Encounters of The Third Kind

Superman: The Movie

The Empire Strikes Back

Raiders of the Lost Ark

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom

Pressumed Innocent

Hook

Jurassic Park

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

Justin - Who can leave off Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone if Joe and Neil can leave off Empire.

Hi! Some of this will be debatable....best to least best..

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark

2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

3. The Empire Strikes Back

4. Jurassic Park

5. E.T.

6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

7. A.I. Artificial Intelligence

8. Catch Me if you Can

9. Revenge of the Sith

10. War of the Worlds

And also, Id say as classic Masterpieces go that Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List are in there somewhere. Anyone have anything different than whats already been said?

Maybe. Maybe.

Revenge of the Sith is in there for me now(the complete score)

8O Then "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" should be in your masterpiece list as well.

If I have to narrow my list down from "everything" to just a few, I wouldn't hesitate to list:

Jaws

Star Wars

The Empire Strikes Back

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Jeff -- who thinks Williams wouldn't be Williams without these scores

Why not post your own list Stefancos? And Revenge Of The Sith is in my opinion one of the very best Williams scores since Schindler's List.

I think of Home Alone as being up there in significance with ET, Schindler’s List, Jaws, etc. in terms of carving out a very unique spot in JW’s career. The film came out of nowhere and was very popular with the public, eventually becoming one of the biggest money-makers in film history at that time. The score was a big part of that and one can easily imagine his Christmas music living on in people’s associations with the season.

Well I think most people probably disagree judging by the selections so far. That's why figured I'd single it out for special mention. Comedies typically get overlooked in every category wheter it be acting, direction, etc. and in the case of Home Alone, the film was mostly disliked by critics and probably isn't anybody's favorite here. But if we compensate for that, I think its deserving of a special place in his repetoire and, as I say, a lot of people liked it because it became one of the most popular films at the time without any sort of big opening like films these days. I can't prove it but my feeling is that JW played a much bigger role in that then is generally acknowledged.
