2006 and beyond: So what's next?

To be honest 2005 was a great year in terms of looking forward to certain cinematic and scoring projects. Star Wars Episode III (score and film), War of the Worlds (score and film), Memoirs of a Geisha (score), Munich (score and film), King Kong (score and film), The Goblet of Fire (score and film)...

I mean; 4 new Williams scores was something to sustain me this past year and the final Star Wars film, 2 Steven Spielberg films, a new Peter Jackson film...

Now 2007 may bring Battle Angel, Indiana Jones IV, the Abraham Lincoln film, but to be honest my geeky side isn't too hot for 2006. First; I have the feeling Williams isn't going to score any film and I'm not really into Superman.

Any projects you're interested in?

When did we find out Spielberg was making Munich anyway? At the speed this guys shoots, we could very well have another Spielberg film just around the corner.

I hope he scores some period drama or something like that. I don't think there are that many action-adventure potential projects that I find appealing.

Where's the "other" Roald? How come we never get to see him?

Yeah, of course I personally can't wait for 2007, to finally see the fourth Indiana Jones. When I first heard of it, it should have opened on July, 4th 2005 and that date was so far in the future...now that date belongs to the past, and the project was postponed many many times...

2006 will be the year of Die Hard 4.0 .I'm interested both in the movie and the score. The movie, because the actual trilogy is one of my favourite ever, and I can't wait to see Bruce Willis as John McClane once again.

And I'm curious about the score. The trilogy featured 3 brilliant score by Michael Kamen, but now that he's gone, I'm interestd on how the new composer will score this. I don't know if the new composer has already been hired (no word of it at IMDb) though. I expect a great action score. Who do you think it's the ideal composer for this project? Maybe John Powell or Graeme Revell? Or maybe Michael Giacchino or John Debney? Just guessing...

But I think that, if we don't consider John Williams, this 2005 hasn't been a great year IMO. Nothing really great and memorable.

Kingdom of Heaven, The Corpse Bride and Legend of Zorro were excellent scores(despite what Neil thinks). Hostage, History of Violence, Cinderella Man, Harry Potter, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory were also good.

I think we might hope for this new year, Spielberg´s Lincoln, or the new Columbus movie about a superhero... Bot will be surely scored by Williams

Because this is a John Williams fanboard. I've already said I'm very dualistic when it comes to film. If this was an Ingmar Bergman board or an Andrei Tarkovsky chatroom things would be different. But for me, John Williams symbolizes that other world of cinema that I love: the world of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis and all. The Hollywood filmscape.

Of course I can post about my enthusiasm for the Coen Brothers or the Dogma films in here, but I don't really feel the need.

Superman Returns (Bryan Singer), Manderlay (Lars Von Trier), Battle Angel (J. Cameron), Sunshine (Danny Boyle), Lady in the Water (M. Night Shyamalan), ...

Hmm...let's see...Big Momma's House 2, only the movie (Martin Lawrence is one of the funniest out there), Final Destination 3, only the movie (both movies were great, both scores were mediocre...I'd like to have a man, a real composer this time...), Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, both movie and score (the first was great, both movie and David Newman's score), Silent Hill (I'm always curious to see how a movie from a videogame came out, the videogames scores were pretty good), Mission Impossible III (only because Giacchino is light years better than Zimmer, the movie doesn't interests me), The Da Vinci Code (a pro is my favorite actor Tom Hanks, a con is, again, Zimmer), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (fine movie, we all know about the score...), Jackass 2 should be funny (as it was the regular MTV show).

But still, nothing REALLY interest me. Probably only Die Hard 4.0 for me.

Kingdom of Heaven, The Corpse Bride and Legend of Zorro were excellent scores(despite what Neil thinks).

Do I even have an opinion on those?

Oh yeah, I saw Kingdumb of Heaven. Good use of Goldsmith music. The rest? :|;)

I avoided the other two.

The rest was excellent, far better in the film than the Goldsmith, Beltrami or Zimmer/Cassidy music. You just won't give it a chance (understandable, concidering your hating the film, MV, and your general close-mindedness in film music).

Looking forward to:

Munich (comes out in January)

Lady in the Water (new Shyamalan!)

X3 (hope it's as good as the other two)

Superman Returns (not that hot on Supes, but Singer's directing)

M:I:III (directed by J.J. Abrams, score by Giacchino, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is in this; too bad Scarlett Johanssen dropped out; I just hope Abrams can reign in Cruise's smirking)

Casino Royale (it's James Bond, for crying out loud)

Cars (I have my reservations, but it's Pixar, so I'll still go see it)

Garfield 2.

Apparently there's going to be a film called Half-Life in 2006.

A precocious boy and his jaded sister use their imaginative powers to escape a confining home-life, save their self-destructive mother from her charmingly manipulative boyfriend, and finally reinvent their world in a mind bending conclusion.

Hmmmm.....so it's not Gordon Freeman then, is it?

Let's see, scores I'm looking forward to next year:

M:I III

Casino Royale

X-Men 3

Superman Returns (well, maybe)

The Wild

And if Stephen Sommers really is making Flash Gordon next year, and Silvestri really is scoring it, then I look forward to buying the score and avoiding the film like the plague. Good ol' Silvestri always manages to work wonders with Sommers' crap.

Wow, I've never looked at a list like that before. Maybe this happens all the time, but it's news to me. A movie has a sequel scheduled for the same year before the first one is even released.

MI:3 - Pretty much only for the J.J. Abrams/Michael Giacchino dream team.

Casino Royale - Self-explanatory

X-Men III - The only recent superhero movies to make me want more after watching them.

The Producers - It's not on till Jan 12 here...

That's about all of the pre-planned movies for me. I guess I'll wait and see what else is on offer.

Something should peak my interest eventually but right now there's really nothing I'm looking forward to in 2006. Well unless it's something confirmed for John Williams.

Bond, Die Hard, MI:III, Superman for me.....

Greg - quite depressed that every film on my list is either a sequel or a re-make.....except for one that is technically both AND a prequel all rolled into one.......

I thought that 2005 was a great year for music... Nothing truely memorable, but I found a new love for Danny Elfman's music with Corpse Bride and Charlie... And all of the John Williams scores this year are great as well.

2006 is a quite year for John Williams. Since he old maybe he just taking a break for a year for his hard work for working all those films he wrote the scores for in 2005.

Isn't every film nowadays a sequel, prequel, previously written book, or orginally a Japanese film? Instead of putting their money up to stop piracy, they need to use that money to find new original talent.

Hi! First time poster, long timer fan. I actually just posted a preview for some of 2006 scores on my blog last week. The choices may seem slim, but there are some potentially great soundtracks to be found. Please check it out!
