Here is a youtube version of the samples.

Dude, first you 'reserve' a post for a Youtube link, for what reason we can only guess, and then you quote yourself!

:D

I'm hearing also a bit of the theme in Sir Francis and the Unicorn.

I'm not sure that's the same theme. In Sir Francis we hear a hint of the grand theme from the first trailer (not the teaser). What some referred to as pirate music. It's also in The Return to Marlinspike Hall and Finale.

But in Captain Haddock Takes the Oars, there's Tinker-Tin yet again, a bit disguised but recognizable.

I made a bad joke about the missing Picking Pockets cue, so instead of leaving a "Deleted" or "Edited" or somthing, I opted to put the link there, then I quoted it so it would be at the end of the page where it could be seen.

Not, it's there right at the beginning of the Sir Francis sample. It's the variation starting with the low note instead of a high one, like in Flight. I maintain this is Snowy's theme and it works like Hedwig's.

I think Tinker-Tin is called that because Tintin is tinkering with the seaplane.

Damn, it's 1:54 a.m. already.

After one listen my observations

Overall, it seems "pretty cool", but I didn't get a "OMG that was awesome" moment

That's strange,

I got that feeling from hearing "The Milanese Nightingale".

I don't really care for a lot of the action stuff, but anything that is not that sounds pretty great.

I don't WANT a formulaic Williams heroic theme for Tintin.

But I'm probably in the minority there.

Yes, I hear the reference, I just think these are two different themes.

This would be the theme in the beginning of Sir Frances and The Return to Marlinspike Hall and Finale:

But this is the so called Tinker-Tin:post-19801-0-61292300-1317773837_thumb.p

But it could of course very well be two parts of the same piece.

Who's theme is the one that resembles Harry Potter? I'm talking about the one that sounds at the end of Capturing Mr. Silk.

Posted

My sweet lord. What a long 3 years it has been. It sounds fantastic. And so gloriously not American. It's going to be a long 3 weeks, ladies and gents.

Posted

These sound great! This is anything but Williams on autopilot...the first two tracks alone are a VERY different feel from "standard" Williams fare. As you go farther into the samples you start to recognize a bit more of his signature style, but all in all it sounds like a very unique score.

Also worth noting that the beginning of the clip for "Sir Francis and the Unicorn" is a passage that we assumed was written specifically for the trailer...

This sounds like it'll be the kind of score that will grow on me. I don't hear anything as accessible as his most popular tunes, but I am 100% okay with that. Often, these scores are the most rewarding when you finally get into them.

Posted

Meh. The sound quality is nice.

The score sounds okay, but nothing mind blowing. I'm still looking much more forward to War Horse.

I think Jason said that was Haddocks theme.

I'm looking much more forward to anything else. Starts off as Catch Me If You Can and then delves into his autopilot filler. While I enjoyed the music in the War Horse trailer, it didn't catch my ear all that much. That will probably end up being nothing more as well. Good thing for Giacchino and Zimmer.

Posted

Why would that be good for them?

I'd take a score with 70% autopilot Williams and 30% inspired Williams over Zimmer's or Giacchino's 100% "best" any time.

gkgyver - still wondering what made Koray stumble across a John Williams fan board.

You got all that from 30 second clips?

That's Haddock's Theme? It sounds kinda... dark for him. Just in case, the one I'm talking about is the one that sounds kinda like The Chamber of Secrets and its heard again on the "Finale" cue right before The Adventure Continues.

Huh... what? I don't think ANYBODY assumed that. Especially since I said it was from a cue called "Old Enemies Meet".

It's not good for them, it's good for me.

Oscar #6 is now another 2 years away.

This sounds like...

John Williams meets Michael Giacchino.

I like it...it's like Williams listened to a lot of Up and Ratatouille...read some of our posts about his modern signature sound, and decided to combine his 80s self with some Giacchino.

Yeah yeah, hang me for comparing him to a younger composer, but you know it's true.

Posted

The Giacchino similarities seem a little superficial (really he's just using a few of the same instruments that Giacchino did), but I agree that is has a bit of his 80s sound. There was one cue in particular that sounded very Last Crusadeish.

Posted

Yes , right., I'm sure JW is trying to mimic Michael Giachino

Funniest thing I've read from the most ardent Giacchino fanboy on this board

I still can't "grasp" this score from the samples only. I'm sure I'll like it a lot more once we get the full OST and I can grasp the themes a bit more

But I'm definitely not to fond of Track1

Posted

OK, I've had time to listen to all the samples multiple times and digest them. Overall, whoever did a job of selecting which part of each track to sample did a bad job. They seemed to go out of their way to select passages that don't feature any of themes.

Here is what I could hear (all times are per the mp3s you can download off the website):

Snowy's Theme:

07. Sir Francis and the Unicorn 0:02-0:08

08. Captain Haddock Takes the Oars 0:00-0:02

08. Captain Haddock Takes the Oars 0:11-0:13

11. The Flight to Bagghar 0:07-0:14

15. The Captain’s Counsel 0:08-0:19

17. The Return to Marlinspike Hall and Finale 0:03-0:10

Red Rackham's Theme

07. Sir Francis and the Unicorn 0:14-end

Unknown Theme (so named because I don't know what it represents!)

09. Red Rackham’s Curse and the Treasure 0:26-end

18. The Adventure Continues 0:06-end

Haddock's Theme

10. Capturing Mr. Silk 0:19-end

John Williams has seen how Spielberg was looking at Giacchino during Super 8's production. And Medal of Honor.

That's my exact impression .Everything sounds "right" for JW except no big payoffs of themes in the samples .Of course all the big theme "payoffs" might be unreleased music (as often the case)

K.M. Still wondering why Giacchino's name is even mentioned in this thread. Maybe in 30 years he'll be able to compose 30 seconds of music as complex as heard in these samples

Great composers should be compared and dissected against one another! ;)

Pope said this in an interview back in 2009: "The main theme is highly energetic, filled with great tonal twists and turns, reflecting, I suspect, Tintin’s heroic energy. It will become a classic, I think."

It could be The Adventure Continues track...

I think so, definitely. It fits the description, and it feels like an end credits piece. I have a feeling we'll be hearing that theme a lot, and it's already grown on me! I love it!!!

Rest of the samples sound great too, can't wait for the rest of the music :)

Posted

I'm loving that theme too, mostly because... I'm completely unfamiliar with it!

Posted

This stuff sounds almost as good as third-rate Giacchino. But I applaud Johnny for the effort. I think it's cute the way the old geezer thinks he's still got it.

Posted

Well let's be honest, Johnny is like that poor ol' coot who keeps showing up to work after he's been let go due to his crappy work, but no one wants to say anything because Johnny is OH such a nice guy.

Posted

Track 01 "The Adventures of TIntin" is definitely "Tinker-tin". I think it's the second half of the end credits, and Track 18 "The Adventure Continues" is the first half

Posted

I'm loving the samples and can't wait to get my hands on the CD. I also agree with Jason and suspect that The Adventure Continues opens the credits and is then followed by The Adventures of Tintin and possibly Snowy's Theme. Hearing the trailer music in Sir Francis and the Unicorn is also awesome, but does anyone have any idea if the music used in the Spanish trailer will appear on the album? I have a sneaky suspicion that that music could be the much talked about Picking Pockets.

Posted

The music from the spanish trailer was taken from the Karaboudjan sequence of the film, so maybe its inside "Escape from the Karaboudjan", or some other track

Posted

I hope there's a lengthy main titles sequences where the music can shine. I miss those.

Posted

I don't think there will be one

Whatever music plays over the opening logos or short opening credits was probably in "Picking Pockets" anyway, unfortunately

So Jason does your quick run down mean that the samples do not feature any major statement of Tintin main theme?

The music sounds indeed like a mix of modern Williams and his old styles. I can't wait to hear the whole album since the clips as Jason said sound like they were picked from the most non-thematic passages.

Posted

It reminds me of RATATOUILLE - savoir vivre, indeed!

And for all of you waiting for big POTTER themes: they aren't there.

Posted

Spielberg movies rarely have them. Jaws, Catch Me if You Can and not much else

I listened to first few samples and, despite my initial confusion, I am must admit I am positively surprised. It's not what I expected, but that's actually a very good thing. The last thing I want is to listen to the same stuff again. I didn't catch any memorable theme yet, but, as I said, I only listened to few track.

Posted

Sounds fun. I didn't pick up on any sweeping themes but then again these are just small samples. It has me wanting more though.

Posted

I was very happy during the first 2 tracks - I thought Williams finally went for it - but after that the score becomes generic.

Posted

This sounds fantastic!!!! It's like a mix of old and new Williams, but different in a way from those two. It's like he found a new style!

Tintin's Theme is brilliant! Nothing like I could have ever expected. Johnny surprises us again! In fact, the whole score (so far) is an extremly delightful surprise. Something better than I could have even hoped for.

Kudos to you, Johnny! And can't freakin wait to hear the whole thing.

Johnny does it again!!!

:ola: ola: :ola:

(Josh, who still hasn't listened to them... but I probably will later) :P

Wow, this sounds truly awesome. Much, much better than I had expected from certain reports.

A lot of classic Williams in there, intermingled with some Crystal Skull. No annoying Grievous-action-type of cues thus far. Instead - so much excitement. And I love the first two samples!

Like what I am reading, my friend! :)

Btw, it's so annoying when people listen to a few samples and immediately judge: "oh, this is modern Williams," or "oh this is old-fashioned vintage Williams." Williams was always a fantastic composer, and his style has never changed all that much the way some make out...

That is true. It is heart warming to hear his familiar adventure sound yet he infuses it with new spirit yet again. I have to say the clips are promising but somehow they feel like they leave the juiciest stuff out (I guess that's the point).

So, am I the only one who haven't (and won't) listened to the samples? What about all those people who pretended they'll wait till the soundtrack is released to listen to it in its entirety? You guys are weak!

I never made any pretense of holding out until the CD comes out! Come on Bloodboal! Give in to your desire to hear the sweet music!

I am still considering it - seriously.

Although I have an idea I will cave too. 3 weeks is just too long...

Well, how long is each sample? 30 seconds? 1 minute? Of course, most of the good stuff is left out.

That's why I didn't want to listen to the samples. I wanted to enjoy the album in its entirety--from beginning to finish -- and not get too familiar with a 30-second portion of each track.

I definitely like what I'm hearing. It's John Williams at his most playful and quirky. I'm sure I'll be delighted.

I'll let the nit-picking/whining to other fellows (who seem to be impossible to be pleased by anything by JW). Some of the comments on this thread are some of the most idiotic and lunatic I ever read here.
