  1. Thanks for posting the interview Jason / Ricard. Mike was a perfect guest and it was a joy to be able to weave the music in and out during the conversation. What a wonderful movie and score.

  2. I thought it would be helpful to group all of John Williams' film scores by the studio that owns the rights. It helps to figure out what might be coming out by a label if they release some clues, etc. Beyond that, it's just kind of interesting to see what studios John has worked the most and least for. And which studios have been the best and worst at licensing their properties out to the specialty labels. This is basically an updated version of this original post here. 3. It may only be one track, but a live recording of the theme from Schindler's List has been released as part of a recent collection celebrating the tenure of the New York Philharmonic's concertmaster (just retired), Glenn Dicterow. The album may be found on iTunes here. The digital booklet contains a bio of JW amongst the other conductors, and the program notes for Schindler's List include a little note from Glenn Dicterow: "I knew John [Williams] from when I was in the LA Philharmonic. I did some commercial work and I played on the Jaws, Jaws 2, and Close encounters scores. He’s such a consummate musician. First of all he used to play in the studios as a pianist, so he’s a phenomenal pianist and can read anything, but he’s such a clever guy and such a great composer that I have always enjoyed working with him. When he came to the Philharmonic we renewed our relationship and I had the chance to play not only Schindler’s list, but we also worked on Fiddler on the Roof, this gigantic solo that he wrote for Isaac Stern initially. That was so beautifully done. So he and I go back a long way and who knows, maybe I’ll end up in another session when I go back to Los Angeles. You never know."

  4. God, I love this album more and more with each listen. It's strikes just the right balance between warm, dark, mysterious and elusive. Karol

Clustral, aleatoric, spectral. Lots of string harmonics, maybe harmonic glissandos. I think Shore would have gone by the way of Death Marshes with Sprechstimme voices chanting the Cold Be Heart and Hand and Bone in Black Speech and perhaps the evil sheen of brooding low woodwinds and bowed cymbals and Footsteps of Doom motif. Some strident brass screams and pounding timpani and aleatoric double basses for Bombadil's breaking of the tomb and nice rendition of Bombadil's theme (obviously some kind of relation to the Nature's Reclamation in more rustic guise) for the subsequent scene where he sees the hobbits to the safe road to Bree.

All what i can get out of this is how Bay makes art, pardon, pop art, because these movies are needlessly inflated at 160 minutes. What's more, the palpable awe the author seems to feel at the shrine of the almighty Dollar shrouds any sensible judgment of the aesthetic and contentual impact these monsters deliver beyond their eye and ear candy - women are bimbos, great, disgusting racial caricatures, the heck, even the chinese laugh at them, military worship, awww come on... It's not that i see T1-4 as threat to humanity or something, but that all these very warranted objections are brushed aside because Michael Bay just wants to be a global artist for the common folk seems a tiny bit offensive to my weary eyes.

How does a 'terrible' movie make $300 million in three days? http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/30/5857506/Transformers-bay-300-million Some interesting points raised. The closing one is probably the closest to the truth. Michael Bay understands the secret sauce of white 'Murica, there's no doubt about it.

Yeah, if we're going in that sort of direction all the better! For me, although I'm not especially fond of the "Paths of the Dead" sequence, or of the appearance of the Dead, or of the fact that they're brought directly to Minas Tirith, these are relatively minor complaints in the scheme of things; it becomes a disaster when they arrive at the Pelennor Fields and whizz around sweeping the baddies up like a cosmic vacuum cleaner. I think I could even forget the narrative problems this poses, and the silly look of it, but the jovial, celebratory mood of the scene (for which Howard Shore's music - though not necessarily Howard Shore - is partly responsible) is a real deal-breaker for me.

  13. Black Gold by James Horner Less bombastic and mushy epic melodrama from Horner. Shorter album is a blessing, too. Fat-free and to the point. Good stuff. Karol
