The use of the original 60's theme in the logo gave me hope but hearing MGs real theme for Spiderman was okay. It did remind me of tintin. However all I could hum at the end was Vulture's theme. Anyone else draw parallels to the Bond motif from Casino Royale, at least to the first half of the Vulture theme? It's all I can think about. Yeah the Vulture theme is really catchy! Jay 37,479
I have to say it: This score is growing on me. And I already liked it on my first listen! I was blasting it on the car on the way to work today, and it REALLY is a lot of fun. I like it so much more than Rogue One, Dr Strange, Zootopia, basically every "big" score he's done that isn't a Star Trek one in a long while. It certainly doesn't break any new ground - the vulture theme really is extremely similar to all his Star Trek villain music - but its a fun summer action score. I dig it! cameron.osborn and Jwfan2234
Disco Stu 15,495
So the superhero scores this year so far have been terrible-to-fine. There's still Elfman's Justice League score to come though! Can't wait to hear that.
Jay 37,479
I don't think I've listened to any other superhero scores from this year; What would they be, just Guardians 2 and Wonder Woman? I love so much of Elfman's work, old and current, but I really have no idea what to expect from Justice League. I hope its great! I really liked his work on Avengers 2. Unlucky Bastard 7,782
My cinema going has become more diffuse lately since all these blockbusters are being released back to back. Quppa 117
Monumental Meltdown is easily one of my favourite Giacchino cues from recent years. As saulocf noted, it would have been nice to hear Brian Tyler's Iron Man theme instead of the throwaway melody that we got. Perhaps Tyler's falling out with Marvel has stymied any chance of musical continuity with his MCU scores. At least we got snippets of Silvestri's theme! Arpy 4,145
Webbed Surveillance, Drag Racing, Monumental Meltdown and Liftoff are highlights- all propulsive action cues with clear thematic development of both Spider-Man's and The Vulture's themes. Academic Decommitment sounds like it could be of the same vein as Inside Out or Zootopia, but it's still cool. Quppa

Popular Post Max 141
I really enjoyed Iron Man's theme--my favorite of the three (?) Iron Man themes so far, honestly. I thought it sounded heroic, sort of how Peter would think of Mr. Stark, and I really like its appearances the "Ferry Dust Up" and "A Stark Contrast" tracks. I think it has a lot of potential, and I'd love to hear Giacchino get to use it again in the future. There's a great interview here about Giacchino's work on this and War for the Planet of the Apes, and he confirms that his Spider-Man theme is supposed to be young and clumsy like the character, which is why I think I like it more than the other Spider-Man themes (though, admittedly, I'm not 100% sure what part of Elfman's main titles is his main theme, even after several listens). What I like about Giacchino's Marvel scores (that other people might not like so much) is that his themes aren't just heroic fanfares. Spider-Man's theme is clumsy and Doctor Strange's theme is kind of sad, but I think both themes reflect their characters well (and I still think that both themes receive pretty heroic renditions in their respective scores). Iron Man's theme sounds the most heroic to me, but that's also how Peter imagines Iron Man, so it's still fitting to the character in a way. And I think the other themes in both scores fit their films just fine. The Ancient One's theme is very mystic and is probably my favorite from Doctor Strange, and while both films' love themes appear only briefly in the films/scores themselves, I really like their longer renditions in the end credits. I think Vulture's theme and the music in his scenes (such as "Fly-By-Night Operation") do a good job capturing the "assembled" nature of the character--combinations of different weapons and machines from different previous villains--and I like the dark choral writing for Kaecilius. It might not be the most distinctive theme in that score, but Kaecilius also isn't the most distinctive villain, so I can forgive Giacchino for that... But overall, I like that Giacchino's themes reflect the nature of their characters, even if that doesn't lend itself to the most heroic music ever written. So anyway, to summarize: A Giacchino fan is happy with Giacchino. shad79, James, Jay and 3 others

James 119
I like the themes for Vulture and Spider. However Stark remains poorly represented. The theme is still very limited, but who knows, if Marvel allows it, he may have more "pompous" renditions in the future.

His themes are usually very short without interludes or B sections, so would not make very interesting Williams like concert suites. He does rather few of them I think even though many of his themes are quite attractive. James and Arpy
crocodile 8,052
It's also the fact his themes are also very "circular" yet "static". They always end where they start - first statement leads to another statement in the same key. You can change the orchestration...or play them loud or soft...but it's mostly just window dressing. Each statement seems to be virtually the same. They almost never move to a different phrase/key and never change their contours much (if ever). Patrick Doyle, otherwise a very fine composer, has the same problem actually. It's not like something, say, Rey's theme where Williams always changes not only key but themes' shape. And he also resolves it in various ways. True, it might make it less distinctive in the process but you get more satisfaction. That is why enjoy Giacchino's work the most when it's textural and where his phrases are deliberately and appropriately simple. Karol
Arpy 4,145
Just came back from the film and was disappointed with how low the music was mixed, the sound effects were bumped up much higher that they drowned out the music, so it wasn't until the end credits that the mix was raised. I noticed a few cues that are missing from the soundtrack release, cues which follow on from the same material in Monumental Meltdown. There's also a lovely piano rendition of the theme that's present in the end credits that's unfortunately excised from the album. Spider-Man's theme works well with this version of a younger, more clumsy Peter Parker/Spider-Man, it doesn't match Elfman's level of glorious heroism and majesty, but it's still memorable and effective. It's just a shame about the mix, Monumental Meltdown was perhaps the only cue mixed loud enough to shine... James

Arpy 4,145
Not sure if it was mentioned, but earlier it was discussed that there was no mention of the Avengers theme by Silvestri in the album booklet, but it's mentioned at the end of the credits under the 'songs' section.
