    Wow, that was fast.

Can't wait to hold it in my hands. More excited about this than I was about Far and Away or the Disaster Boxset...

Btw, John Williams visiting the set of War of the Worlds. Love this pic!

There’s a very noticeable improvement in sound and the low end is especially more prominent. The timpani is effectively spread antiphonally too.

Yes that photo is great, Josh. It’s lifted from the end of the Blu-ray/DVD music feature which I would encourage you all to watch.

I can’t say I had any complaints about the sound of the original OST. I don’t think any dramatic improvement in quality was really possible in this case, but everything sounds excellent so far.

    Just ripping my copy now.

The booklet looks nice, but I’d wish they’d make space for a full cue-by-cue chronological discussion, and there’s no notes about the alternates at all. It’s very well-written, but more high-level overview of the music.

Mike Matessino does provide some tech notes. He received Protools files that still had the performance edits to conform to the picture, so he had to meticulously open these back up to be able to present the cues as they were originally recorded.

When I first listened to War of the Worlds back in 2005, I must admit, I was a bit disappointed. So much dissonance, no recognizable, hummable themes, overall very dark and gloomy and murky.

15 years later, I hear so much more. It's not just mindless dissonant dark music, see. It's John Williams at the top of his game, the orchestration is multi-layered and incredibly well thought out and addictive, it's propulsive, pernicious, viscerally horrifying and breathtaking music... A consummate artist giving all he has at the service of the picture!

Can't wait to listen to this album from start to finish!

    Yeah, love this scene.

Munich actually features some of the fanciest and most complex single Spielberg shots ever... I know many don't know this. There's another shot which takes place inside a car with the assassins sitting inside (making use of the rear view mirror), which stuck in my mind.

How can you forget that? If it had been done by MM, nobody would even be considering, let alone wanting, another Hook.

There's a greater chance of a Lost World of dinosaurs existing than Thor owning an LLL expansion.

I pretty much love each version equally.  Like if either comes on I never wish I was listening to the other instead.

But if I had to pick, I prefer the revised opening.  It's really neat!

I love pieces like this that start out with an energetic intro that's a take on material found later in the piece.

I'm going with the original because it's what I've known and been familiar with for years. I like both but I prefer the original opening over the more bombastic one.
