bruce marshall reacted to Thor in Are There Any Film Composers Working Who Can’t Read/Write Music?
I don't think there are many composers who can't read any music at all, even if they're self-taught and learned it early on in their careers.

That being said, in this day and age, it isn't really necessary to be able to read music fluently. Vangelis didn't read music, as far as I remember, but still composed some of the greatest scores of all time. The tools by which to compose don't really matter; it's the end result that matters. The most important thing for a composer is to have dramatic flair.

I recently listened to Legends of the Fall and it sounded to me like Horner trying to sound like John Barry... and failing.

I bought this recently. I can’t agree with the opinion that is rote in any way, this seems inspired all the way through. Over time, this has grown to be a top ten maybe even a top five Goldsmith score. I’m very glad I own the La-La Land release. It’s excellently packaged, it has great liner notes. This is going to get pulled down off the shelf a lot.

Taste is a funny thing. I know some folks who like other 90s Goldsmith but this isn’t their cup of tea. Maybe it’s the central romance (or lack of synths)? Dunno, but I find a lot to love in this score even though Lionheart is way better 😉.

I don't know about recording sessions, but as I (probably) said earlier in the thread, Goldenthal's original album program leaked a few years back, and it's superb. Desperately needs a commercial release.

Matching covers for Indiana Jones series, using Matt Ferguson artwork. Dial of Destiny has 'complete' variant for recent isolated score track

I'm unfamiliar with that film, and it's score... and don't actually own any Morricone scores.

    Ah, you're so young.

I fondly remember us emigrating from FSM to Peter Kelly's MM (moviemusic.com), for a period of time, when the FSM board went down around the millennium turnover. Good times.

    Saw this!!

The first half of the season, episodes 1-6, is some of the best tv out there. And really is best to go into as blind as possible. Especially episodes 5 & 6 are stellar

Episodes 7-10 and 11 are still really good, but are a bit less special.
    But definitely worth checking out

I had a feeling this was coming out when I saw that the revamped Kamen site had sound clips from it. Looking forward to checking out the whole thing. Kamen is hit/miss, but some of his best stuff, I truly adore. And I will always - ALWAYS! -- applaud premiere releases of previously unreleased scores regardless.

Will do my best to convince with the Spotlight. I too am not really into military marches, but (as with Patton in some ways) I would argue the “meat” of this score is internal. Yes there are some bursts of action but overall it feels very much like a thoughtful character based score.

I will also say I was rather taken aback by just how good the film recording sounds on this. It sounds like a much more modern recording than say Damnation Alley from the same year. I guess that speaks somewhat to Universal’s tape preservation practices?

Black Mirror 6x01 Joan Is Awful

Black Mirror is back, baby!  I liked this episode a lot!  After a very disappointing season 5, I was so glad they started season 6 off with an episode that was fun, funny, exciting, fresh, and not bleak as hell.  The fact that the ending is basically a happy one is so rare for Black Mirror, but it came here at just the right time.  Annie Murphy was good (much better than Kevin Can Fuck Himself), and Salma Hayek was brilliant casting to play opposite her.  The Cate Blanchett and Michael Cera castings were icing on the cake too.

I was holding out hope for an end of year Intrada JW release but they probably didn’t want to coincide with Hook.  At least we know we have two releases cooking in the oven for 2024 most likely!

Looks like we’re successfully scheduled for a recording next week! Alas we probably won’t be able to have it edited in time for Intrada’s release date like we’d originally hoped, but I’m optimistic we may be able to get it out a few days before Christmas.

bruce marshall reacted to Damien F in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom appreciation thread (film & score)
There is something about JW's approach to Temple that fascinates me. I think unlike the proceeding movies in the genre he composed (Raiders / Empire / ET / ROTJ), there is something about Temple that feels less grand, less operatic, and less prestige. It feels like a B movie, not in budget but in the storytelling approach. And so if JW had matched that with a score of 50% less complexity and maybe one or two fewer themes than we actually got, it still would have been an amazing score. But I think more than any other scoring assignment, JW really went above and beyond with the score he wrote. I get the impression he just really enjoyed and had fun scoring this film.
