They're terrible as adaptations and they're just plain bad as films. A handful of good scenes is not enough to redeem several hours worth of cinematic garbage. To claim that they would be the best fantasy films ever made if it weren't for LOTR is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard a Hobbit apologist say. To take this position and then claim that you're one of the trilogy's harshest critics on any message board is laughable.

The Hobbit isn't terrible. If it were made first, it would probably be considered the greatest fantasy film made to date. It's not in the same league as LOTR, of course, and it suffers in many ways by comparison. But I don't think it's "terrible" a film, and I've been one of its harshest critics on here.

But speaking of comparison, if The Hobbit is made to look worse in comparison to LOTR, it's certainly improved, in my eyes at least, in comparison to Rings of Power.

Even though they're really the only substantive, fleshed out stories they have the rights to, I doubt they'd remake The Hobbit or LOTR, too soon (and thank God for that).  And even if they did do a remake, it would, of course, be a disaster, and I shudder to think about how they’d cast the Fellowship.

I'm just glad we can get something with the actual production design of the The Lord of the Rings, not a vague approximation thereof a-la The Rings of Power.

I think they should just leave it alone as a 2 film trilogies.

What do they have the rights to? If they can do something good which is based on Tolkien then why not, but does anyone really need new LOTR movies? The original films cannot be surpassed anyway and a MCUification of the Jackson/Tolkien series isn’t really needed.

IMO, if they make new live action films then Jackson should be involved and obviously Shore as well.

Well done Bear, and richly deserved. Surely the best television score of the year.

It feels appropriate at this moment to quote what the ever-humble Rosenman said of his own score for the same franchise, "When a film fails, it pulls everything connected with it down to oblivion. Unfortunately, in this case, it includes a score of great complexity and sophistication."

Well she is 88.  Our Johnny aside, almost anyone at her age has retired long before.  From my late elderly neighbor who died in his mid 90's, he said each year at his age is like 10 years of aging.  Respect that she lasted as long as she did.  JW is superhuman so a different category altogether.

That was good. While I can't say it quite lived up to the hype, it was very good...certainly the best hour of Star Trek since 2005.

I'm guessing the end credits for the first episode will be the opening credits for the remainder.  And I agree that the score was a bit of a pastiche (and quite intentionally sentimental), and didn't flow together quite as well as it could have. But in this case, it's a very welcome tapestry, even if all the threads don't fit together perfectly.

So basically modern live action Star Trek has finally arrived at The Orville season 1 scoring from half a decade ago.

This score (mostly the soundtrack album, not the individual episode releases) is one of the few modern soundtracks I regularly listen to. It's a real feat and stands fairly unique in this current age of film and television music.

Well I suppose that out of 35 films Spielberg has directed, if you can only list two better than KOTCS, I'll consider us more or less in agreement.

I enjoyed Lincoln, though I agree that it can be a bit of slog, and was mostly a showcase for Daniel Day Lewis. I also think Spielberg was (understandably) enamoured with Goodwin's book, and perhaps overestimated how engaging a film this small chapter in Lincoln's life would make.

IMO it would have worked better as the limited series Spielberg considered making.

If the last two posts are any indication of the Crystal Skull lovefest that this thread will become, then I'll do with it the same thing I do with most Star Wars threads: just ignore it.

KOTCS is one of the least deserving movies of the "actually, it's underrated" treatment.
