Hold the phone, how can this be Episode X when it's already completely filmed and ready to drop at the right moment?

In all fairness, I have close to zero familiarity with Jane Eyre, so it's possible I might agree with you once properly educated. 😊

My gut reaction is Jaws / TFA. But of course, it's all a continuum. On a more generous day I might say The Cowboys / TFA; on a less generous day I might say Star Wars / ROTS.

If we're talking about how much a score gets into the public consciousness, on the other hand, I'm with @QuartalHarmony.

Hmm...  I'm gonna go with Jane Eyre and TFA. Several folks offered TFA as his last great score and I agree. To be clear, every score JW has written since TFA has been great, but in terms of resonating with the public, TFA was indeed the latest (and probably last) one.

While on the topic of TFA, let us take a moment to re-appreciate what this miracle of a man was able to accomplish. First, he gives one of the most iconic movies in history perhaps the most iconic score in the history of filmmaking in 1977. That's lightning-in-a-bottle shit (and we won't even get into TESB). Then, he comes back 22 years later, the Star Wars hype machine dialed up to 11, and gives us Duel of the Fates, the Flag Parade, and Anakin's Theme (and makes it onto MTV's Total Request Live (the first and only film composer to achieve that feat) with DotF)). That's dent no. 2 in the cultural universe, and creating it is something like a World Series-winning home run with the count at 3-2. Then... jump ahead 16 years. It's time to renew Star Wars for the 21st century. Filmmaking has gone completely different by now. Blockbuster film scoring has Zimmer-fied. New director, new crop of young actors, no George Lucas... does JW have what it takes to kickstart yet another trilogy in the same culture-permeating way he did twice before? Well, doubters, Rey's Theme and March of the Resistance would like a word with you.

This was, and remains, a breathtakingly astounding sequence of achievements. We are fortunate to have been witness to it.

I love "Banning Back Home." It's just JW doing his own version of Dave Grusin's "Mountain Dance." But if you have to do a pastiche of another artist's work, you might as well knock it out of the park like he did.

I really like The Prestige as a film. I consider the score pretty dull; I would never listen to it on its own. But in the context of the film, I start to get some positive feelings about it. Sorta.

At the same time, yes, I'm sure a better score would further elevate the film. And I agree that a film's quality can never turn a shitty score into a great one, much like a score's quality can never turn a shitty film into a great one. The two things affect each other, but not that much.

I finally got around to listening to this today. It's a good time! I'd only heard it in the film before. I enjoy the movie but I tend to get annoyed while watching it—the manic energy and plasticky production design start to grate. I was a little worried that the score on its own would have the same effect, but my fear was unfounded. Zero regrets on the purchase.

The thing that amazes me most is the difference between "Christmas, Why Can't I Find You?" as a song and "Christmas, Why Can't I Find You?" as a theme. No offense to Cynthia Weil or young Taylor Momsen, but the lyrics and the vocal performance really don't do it for me. Then I hear the melody in an orchestra setting, and it really is genuinely sweet.

I actually don't hate the song. It's far from a highlight for me, but I've heard worse end credit songs.

I feel certain the beginning of End of Darth Maul was recorded. If you listen to the beginning of the material used in the film and UE, you can kinda hear a bit of the reverb tail from the previous note. To my knowledge, that's the one bit of TPM that hasn't surfaced anywhere in any form at all.

The fall in the raft never bothered me as much as the shot they ran in reverse showing the dancing girls getting back up from the splits and doing a high kick!

That opening, with Williams' glorious arrangement of "Anything Goes", is just so gonzo—and it's just the beginning! I'll second what @Andy said about the possibility of them being high on something while making this movie, and the fact that it would never be made like that today.

Amrish Puri as Mola Ram is as much a scene-stealer as Ian McDiarmid was as the Emperor in Star Wars, delivering his lines with such gleeful menace. I loved imitating him as a kid (Full disclosure: I still do), and could (can) do a mean "They will be found! You won't!!" (evil laughter)
