Bayesian reacted to Edmilson in Poll: Why are you buying and listening to motion picture scores?
I've been listening to film music for over a decade now, it's part of my personality.

Doug reports that Jumanji sales are strong
5/4/2022
It’s really satisfying to have so many orders come in for Jumanji, immediately upon our release of the soundtrack yesterday. We’ve expanded it from the original 1995 album to include previously unreleased music and included on a second CD the original album for anyone interested in retaining the slightly altered and edited selections chosen by composer James Horner. It was a fantastic album I played a lot when it was first released by Epic and I’m admittedly thrilled to see it now attached to an Intrada release. I’m thankful to Sony Entertainment for that honor. It’s cool to get the opportunity to expand a classic soundtrack and also present the original alongside it for new listeners discovering the excitement of Horner’s music. Given the success of the Jumanji franchise, there are likely quite a few fans now making that discovery!

Robin Williams was perfect. I can't imagine anyone else coming close.
An actor with impeccable comic timing and yet he could play 'forlornness' and 'loneliness' so beautifully. None of those other actors (as much as I love some of them) could have portrayed Alan Parrish as well as Robin.
God bless him.

Raimi on why he wanted Elfman to score.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Director Sam Raimi Explains Why Danny Elfman Returned (comicbook.com)
"I loved Michael Giacchino's Doctor Strange music and I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to work together but I need Danny Elfman by my side," Raimi tells us. "He's like my long-lost brother and he's really a storyteller. He helps me tell the story with his music, but it was wonderful. He loved the Doctor Strange theme and incorporated it into his musical score which was so funny for me because that composer incorporated some of Danny's pieces into [Spider-Man] No Way Home."

Bayesian reacted to Thor in Mike Matessino: "At least 5" new Williams releases due this year
Yes, I have it on good authority, these are the five releases:
1. World Premiere Recordings
A new 2CD recording of Williams' unreleased concert works, on Deutsche Grammophon - featuring the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Williams. First disc contains revised editions of Symphony No. 1, the wind quintet and the piano sonata. Also a few shorter pieces, like A Toast!, Fanfare for Michael Dukakis and Fanfare for Ten-Year-Olds. Second disc contains the clarinet concerto and Seven for Luck, featuring original soprano choice Kathleen Battle who now feels mature enough to perform it.
2. THE RARE BREED / THE PLAINSMAN
As alluded to above, this western twofer is now finally ready to go. Both beautifully curated for listening, easily fitting on one CD.
3. ALCOA PREMIERE THEATRE
The master tapes have finally been retrieved, so this 4CD set contains suites from the best episode scores from the series, including "Jeeney Ray" and "A Moment of Decision".
4. THE SECRET WAYS
Williams first "serious" film score gets a premiere release, wonderfully remastered and curated for listening in a solid 45-minute programme.
5. STORIA DI UNA DONNA
After years of lobbying, Mike has finally convinced Williams to release it. Williams has also prepared a wonderful curated selection at 50 minutes. Artwork by Jim Titus, liner notes by myself.

Bayesian got a reaction from Brando in Mike Matessino: "At least 5" new Williams releases due this year
MM knows his audience and surely wouldn’t be so cruel as to toy with us in that way! Imagine the depths of despair we’d plumb were this mere raillery!
I like to think that, this being the year of JW’s 90th, there’s justification for expanded scores from movies from any year. But if we’re specifically talking releases tied to anniversaries, we can probably agree that “LLL’s Hook: 10th Anniversary Corrected Edition” has a nice ring to it.
Mike, I know you can make it happen!

Bayesian reacted to ocelot in Call to Champions (Arab FIFA 2021 Fireworks Piece)
Thanks The Tafta Hindi one (the fast paced one) is not part of the 6 part suite but I can put them up here since they aren't released officially anywhere yet. Most are just 15 secs etc, one of them is a backing to a vocal so no point having it up here too, but there are three others I can share The Opening Fanfare which is the 15 second one, then two parts to an old mythological philosopher in the Middle East called Juhha. One sec, I will put them up one by one since I am so clumsy with computers x
Arab FIFA Opening Ceremonies - Fanfare
01 Arab FIFA Opening Ceremonies Fanfare.mp3
Arab FIFA Opening Ceremonies - Juhha's Intro
02 Juhha's Intro 1.mp3
Arab FIFA Opening Ceremonies - Juhha pt. 2
1084265330_03JuhhaPart21.mp3
So in this 5 it goes 1. Fanfare, 2. Juhha's Intro, 3. Juhha Part 2, 4. Migrant Birds, 5. Call to Champions
Thank you for even asking xox

Somehow, this thread completely escaped me until now, but wow, am I impressed, @ocelot! This music has a strong JW feel (and I mean that as a serious compliment) and I love the orchestral colors you bring out!
This must have been an exciting commission and I hope it opens the door to more for you. Is there a recording of the whole six-part suite we could get somewhere??

I’m excited for this one, not gonna lie. I knew Cameron would know what’s at stake and pull out all the stops. This teaser and Danny Elfman’s score are the two things that will draw me to the theater when Multiverse of Madness opens.

Bayesian got a reaction from Chewy in The Phantom Menace is 20 years old.
I remember the hype leading up to its release in theaters. News coverage was endless, it seemed. People lining up for days, weeks on the sidewalk.. expectations that it would beat all box office records (which it mostly did, for awhile). And when it actually opened, stories of people watching it and then making a beeline for the next showing.. and then doing it again.
I remember not being more possibly excited and eager for a movie to come out. The previous November, I bought a full-price ticket to Meet Joe Black just so I could watch the first trailer (word was that MJB was the first film to have that trailer)... and then I walked right out of the theater after the trailer ran. Because I read that was what people were doing to be able to get a first glimpse and no one cared about MJB. So silly now to think back and remember I did things like that.
I remember buying the soundtrack a couple weeks or so before the film hit theaters... and gazing at the package art and marveling at the cd in the image of some unknown planet. And listening to it all afternoon. I knew it was a momentous thing because the talk was about JW coming back around to bring SW music to a new generation and how special that was, but interestingly my obsession with JW’s œuvre had not actually started at that point. I knew JW was a big deal and an important composer, but it would be several more years before I really clicked permanently with his music. In fact, I remember being bored by parts of the soundtrack — even right after the opening crawl when it goes mysterious for the Naboo entry scene. I was indifferent to anakin’s theme and basically any slow-ish or quiet parts. But I was obsessed with DotF, the flag parade music, and the droid army march. Couldn’t stop playing those. (It’s obvious to me looking back that my passion for JW began in his rhythmic, brassy, catchy melodies and harmonies and it was much later that I came to appreciate his genius in all the music he wrote that wasn’t outwardly fitting that bill.)
Anyhow, I also remember my friends chuckling at the lame dialogue during movie, and me defending it like I was one of the Ep. I producers or something. Because I was waiting so long, so eagerly for this movie, I was loath to hear any criticism of it that would devalue all the time I spent obsessing over it. But I also remember, very clearly, the vague feelings of disappointment in the pacing and dialogue and acting.. and my best efforts to quash them. I ended up seeing that movie in theaters 4 times (the last two times by myself, once my more sensible friends had moved on to other, better preoccupations.)
It’s hard to believe that was all 20 years ago.

Bayesian reacted to Not Mr. Big in Nicholas Britell - ANDOR (2022)
Definitely. It doesn't have to return to an orchestral thematic JW style Renaissance but something better than fucking sound design as the predominant style. That approach has its own nuances but it's worn out its welcome forever and needs to go away.

Bayesian reacted to Potter Scoring Project in John Williams conducts at Juilliard April 22nd, 2022
**Edit for even more context: Hi, this is Ben Pawlak - we usually post over on the New Project: John Williams Potter Scoring thread. This account is shared between me and Molly Sanford as a composing/music editing team. We are also both professional pianists in graduate programs, hence the pictures!**
Yesterday after the Carnegie concert, the Maestro himself came to Juilliard for a conducting session where we played the Superman March, theme from Jurassic Park, and Adventures on Earth. Here's our post from the Potter thread about it:
I was lucky enough to play piano/celesta, and Molly (who was in town to see his Carnegie concert the night before) was turning pages for me. So the short version is: both of us were in the room with JW and it was thrilling! And yes we did give him a flash drive with GOF, OOTP, and HBP on it.

More context - Several months ago I saw that our April 22nd orchestra read was going to be a John Williams day, so I went to ask my orchestra director if he’d invite JW to the school since he’ll be in town for the Carnegie concert the night before. He said he’d talk to the dean and reach out to see if it were possible. We finally got confirmation about ten days ago that he’d be able and willing to visit the session.
It all spun into something much bigger as camera crews set up microphones and the Juilliard president, provost, dean of the music division, and president emeritus arrived. We had only about an hour to rehearse everything and were all super excited. John showed up in the late morning, and brought Anne-Sophie Mutter with him, so all of the violins were suddenly panicked which was fun.
He was not planning to conduct us while he was here, only to guide the rehearsal which was led by our grad student conductors. He gave them feedback and spoke to the group about certain aspects of the pieces that he finds particularly difficult to work on with an orchestra. At the end, he was talking about bar 8 of the Jurassic Park theme (where it goes into the main tempo) and how it’s always difficult to get together. The conductor who was on the podium at the time asked if he wanted to fix it. He then stood up and took over to much applause. His efficiency in fixing it was incredible. It was an amazing couple minutes that we’ll never forget.
Afterwards he got a photo op at the aforementioned John Williams Orchestra Library. With the amount of cameras that were in the room, I’m sure it will be thrown on Juilliard’s YouTube page at some point in the coming months once they edit it.
Side Note: After we played E.T., Juilliard’s President Damian Woetzel interrupted to say that he had filmed part of it on his phone and sent it to Steven Spielberg who had responded with kind words and a warm hello to John.

Bayesian reacted to Tom in "A Gathering of Friends" Williams / Yo Yo Ma album with Pablo Sainz-Villegas & Jessica Zhou
Watch the video: it is very charming watching the three of them together. Plus, the arrangement is stunning. I have listened 10 times by now. This is already my favorite chamber piece by Williams-just the perfect theme to be given this treatment, and a masterstroke to have the guitar as the pairing.
