Will reacted to mrbellamy in The Daily Mirror John Williams article (aka the "John Williams has never seen Star Wars!" thread)
Lmfao that's a terrible article. It is all his words but recontextualizes everything he said in that interview, most egregiously the line "I don't know. A lot of them are not very memorable and so on. It's probably the most popular music I've done." The first part was actually an aside about the 100 or so films/scores he'd done in his entire career, and then he went back to SW's popularity (about 21 minutes into the interview). They just clipped that quote and it made it look like he's dismissive of his Star Wars themes and bitter about their popularity
Williams should sue for libel!

Turns out people here don't know the Maestro like they think they do.

It reads a lot like one of those computer generated articles you hear about (basically an automated article that copies quotes from the internet based on keywords and auto-generates news articles).

I had never heard of these movies before. Has anyone seen them? Are they any good?

That interview is word for word his interview with Tavis Smiley from last December.

Lol, the whole interview sounds like he's lamenting. "its too hard, working alone all day, holding this pencil, my fingers ache, I never get it right..."

This interview is hilarious! It's all things we've heard JW say before but presented with so little context or tone that it makes him sound like the post negative, depressed composer in the world.

Very positive and rightly so. Fantastic analysis. I didn't notice that Giacchino used the same woodwind statements as Williams did for when they talk about the messages. He really is the ultimate Williams fan, and insanely knowledgeable on every single note of Williams original trilogy.
I love shows like that, that go into meaningful detail, like how Giacchino went back into A New Hope's score to backwards engineer Jyn's theme, and to sprinkle the beginnings of Luke's Theme. Really interesting.

Will got a reaction from Cerebral Cortex in The Classical Music Recommendation Thread
This was recommended to me by Jilal, and might be my favorite piece of classical music I have ever heard:
Just like Williams' works, there are major moments that grab me but also, importantly, smaller more incidental ones too. I just get this feeling of overall perfection in every moment, just as I do with many Williams works.
In particular, just a few of the great moments:
- The opening figure was my favorite part on first listen (specifically 0:16), with those little brass echoes.
- The swashbuckling bit starting at 4:54 absolutely kicks ass. I've noticed that many conductors seem to take this piece slower, but I think that's a very bad thing, and this little bit here is one example. A slow tempo totally wrecks the awesome swashbuckling quality of this moment.
- 5:53 and what follows is one of those random moments that I've really liked.
- I've had the Forest Battle-like ending (7:19 and beyond) stuck in my head at times today.

TESB was composed in about 6 weeks. Hardly 10% of the time Gia had.

I just make the music loud that I put in. I don't remove anything. I wouldn't know how. I just stick the new music in the video as best I can, and turn down the original videos sound until you can't hear the music on there. Sound effects are mixed higher than music most of the time.

Will reacted to TownerFan in John Williams begins recording Star Wars Episode VIII score today in Los Angeles
Personally I quite love the brooding tone and the dark colors of the music in ROTS. In terms of cohesiveness, I think it was a difficult task to keep up with a film with so many sequences and talking heads stuff. But the music still gives the film much more gravitas than was probably needed. At times, Williams pulled out all the stops to give th film an operatic flair otherwise absent--I particularly love the piece when Anakin is on the balcony on Mustafar after killing everyone, with those blasting fanfares that seems to come straight out of Čajkovskij's Manfred.

Will reacted to Lockdown in Michael Giacchino's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - 2022 Expanded Edition now available
I just came back from my second viewing of the film, and there was a few cues that remain unreleased that are really cool, in my opinion. It seems we're missing a number of cues from the first half of the film, and even near the ending as well.

Will reacted to Bryant Burnette in Michael Giacchino's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - 2022 Expanded Edition now available
I work at a theatre, and we're showing the movie on seven screens, so I'm constantly walking past one of them. They're frequently blaring the score -- and I have to say, the more I hear it, the more positive I am about it.

Here's my pointless, yet fun video about what it could be like if JNH scored a Star Wars film. I used Force Awakens footage.

Will reacted to Tom in What would be a good method to try to get Williams' signature?
When I told my, at the time, 3-year old daughter that it is the birthday of the guy who composed Star Wars, she made a silly little birthday card for him. On a whim, I sent it to the BSO c/o Williams. About a full year later, we got a autographed picture with a nice little note from Williams to my daughter.

Approach his house slowly and proceed to knock on the door. Pull out your copy of the Rogue One soundtrack, and he'll slam the door straight in your face.
