Scores are being re-recorded all the time by transcribing by ear.

I haven't seen Dracula and haven't heard the score outside of the concert piece. Is the film worth watching?

One day years from now after finally watching the film I'll be like: 'fuck, I should've bought Dracula!'

Ah, I knew it was either Dracula or Jane Eyre.

So it's Jane Eyre that appears to be truly lost. Just terrible. But at least we've gotten Dracula, which is just fantastic news!

This was the case with Jane Eyre.

I have yet to see the 1979 version!

I've been watching these movie clips on YouTube, and I quite like what I see and hear!

The theatre was not full that day (Friday) but it was full the next evening (Saturday) when I saw ALIEN, on its opening weekend, at the Odeon Leicester Square, in 70mm, and 6-track Dolby Stereo.

As I have posted elsewhere, I am old enough to know better, and young enough not to care.

Yes, I saw the full-fat version of DRACULA, as Gil Taylor shot it. It looked beautiful.

Some thoughts: because of the renewed interest in this score, I've been listening to the OST, combined with a "sort of" rip, from the Blu.
All I can say now, is, I'm so glad that a major soundtrack hole, in JW's oeuvre is being plugged. When I first heard it, I wasn't too impressed, coming, as it did, between the towering achievement of SUPERMAN, and the bombastic, fun-filled 1941. The more I've listened to it, over the years, however, the more, I love it. The playing is - mostly - top-drawer, and I begin to hear little "mini-themes" that never previously registered (the 8-note piano motif in THE BAT ATTACK echos the same motif as the horse tramples on Mina's grave.
Once the complete score is heard, I am confident that DRACULA will take its rightful place, alongside E.T., ROTLA, TESB, and SUPERMAN, as a pinnacle in that golden period, when our man could do no wrong.

About the movie iself, that's not the best Dracula, but that's not the worst.

It's a very decent 70's Dracula and a great Langella performance...

And well, of course, the John Williams score make this movie.... let's say... eternal?

First, you just cannot compare those, idiomatically. The first one is fiery romanticism, Kilar's is minimalist/languid, just as the movie's are totally different beasts. The Badham movie is a big, elegantly designed-if-too-literal horror movie that somehow fits JW's british leanings, Kilar works (has to) mostly around the Grand Guignol of Coppola's stylized circus, though both share the romantic DNA alien to the Lugosi/Lee eras.

The Badham is not a lost masterpiece or anything, but neither is the Coppola: the visual razzle-dazzle wears thin after they leave Transsylvania the whole thing drags in its second act.

    1. The score is one of Williams' best and can compete with Close Encounters, Witches of Eastwick and other similar stuff.
    2. The movie is much better than Coppola's version and I cannot understand why so many people consider it just "mediocre" or "alright". It is one of the ten best movies Williams has scored.
    3. The new Deluxe Edition looks like the second most ambitious CD Club release Varese has ever done. (Stop saying it was La-La Land!)

Naw, they still control Presumed Innocent in perpetuity I think, and since they *didn't* have that control with Dracula it's also possible they might expand some other MCA/UMG title like The River for example (which they previously reissued on CD just as they did with Dracula).

I mean I like The Fury too, preferring one over the other isn't necessarily saying anything bad about the other. Like I said both are really good scores

I look forward to this - who’d have thought this would see the light of day? I ownn the original CD and look forward to upgrade. Big smile on my face!

But @Jay, I saw this was commented earlier, but I have to ask as well - is this what you really think?

Each to his own! : ) And I agree that overall Dracula might be the better score... but Epilogue is one of the best tracks JW has ever written.

That track alone makes The Fury surpass most of what JW has done outside of his top 5 franchises!

For some reason, I forgot for a long time that Dracula is one of the Williams/LSO collaborations. Probably because the OST CD sounded so muddy! So great to have this epic collaboration finally given its justice.

My god, I can't believe it's here! (sung to the French horn in To Scarborough) ORDERED, sweet mother of Nosferatu

That organ in the film version of To Scarborough, wow... which by the way, I should add to the underrated chase scenes thread

This score has long been in my top 10 JW and it's only fitting that Mattesino handled the restoration. W00t!

btw, The Fury is also in my top 10, and equally good imo. '77-'81 is the sweet spot.

I honestly don't remember. But I love that Intrada does it, and LLL sometimes does too.

I cannot recall anything heard in the film nor anything in the sheet music leak that isn't here.

I'm not sure why the press release wouldn't say the source used like all of Intrada's press releases do. Oh well. The liner notes explain everything.

I also agree that Dracula is a better score than The Fury (mostly because nothing in The Fury reaches the level of Night Journeys)... but both are really good scores for sure.

And I also agree that the OST presentation of Dracula is quite repetitive, while the complete score is more varied. Now, it is still a score with only one main theme, but with all the cues there is much more varied and interesting music in between each presentation of the main theme. "Grave Trampling and The Asylum" is easily my favorite new track.

    Ordered Instantly (along with Cowboys)

I thought the master tapes had burned to a crisp. Never expected this release.

I IS one of the remaining holy grail Williams scores. (considering that for Indy/Star Wars and Potter since we have a lot of near complete bootlegs)

This is the first time we  will hear any of the Dracula unreleased music outside of DVD rips

Both booklets contain words, pictures, and text. I honestly don't remember how they broke down what went into each.

The Bat Attack is an album track that contained two cues: Mina Impaled and The Bat Attack.  Each cue is now in their own track, with the Bat Attack cue now called The Attack to avoid confusion with the album track.

I think you'd find the OST to be bit on the repetitive side whereas the remaining material is exactly what makes it more varied. It's one of the greatest expansions of Williams' music to date, no question.

    I was getting that impression.
I imagine that even if it turns out the original album was better here, it's worth it for the sound quality upgrade alone.
