To be fair, the whole concert was full of ritardando's, but the HWW one just happened to be... so good.

I can now say I’ve reminded John Williams which Star Wars film his music is from twice. Once at Carnegie Hall last year, and again tonight! 😂

Absolutely stunning night. Maybe my favorite concert of his I’ve been to. The program was perfect. The choir was epic and Duel of the Fates gave me chills as a dream I’d had since childhood came true. I was directly in front of Williams and had more interactions with him than I ever have before (including reminding him which Star Wars “The Asteroid Field” is from).

    I’m glowing!

EDIT: Also, Duel of the Fates’ ending used the alternate version where the choir went up an octave mid-note. Someone here can probably explain it much better than me. Anakin’s Theme got reworked a bit, too!

I'm not going to lie—I was excitedly curious how quickly this news would hit JWFan!

For those who don't know me, I've been writing about film music and interviewing composers (and directors and actors) professionally for the past decade. Besides the many liner notes, I also write articles and create radio stories for mainstream news outlets like the L.A. Times and NPR. I teach a film music history course at USC. And I've been a card-carrying member of this site since 2003.

I won't divulge too much just yet, because it's still a little early, but I was excited to finally make it public that this book is happening. I've been working on it for three years now, and I've interviewed approximately 150 people. The big kahuna, of course, is John Williams. I plan to share the story of how that happened one day, but not yet.

Thanks for your excitement! I can promise you that there are many things (stories, facts, quotes) in this book you have never heard...

Definitely will be interesting to see Spielberg make something now and find out what Williams decides to do. It still seems weird to think about this being the last, but something will have to be eventually.

The big relief and truly the craziest thing to think about is that he's finally completed 4/4 of the big scores I hoped to get when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. Considering he was already 80, I don't know how I would have felt knowing we were ultimately looking at a 10.5 year timeline. Global pandemic somewhere in there, nbd.

Look at my damn sig. I thought I was being cautiously optimistic rooting for him to finish Episode IX at 87. IT'S BEEN 3.5 YEARS. I'm sorry, I know that everything on here goes back to his age but I'll never get over it. It's badass and it's been such a factor in anticipating these things.

More than a decade, Jesus. This really feels like coming out of a JWFan fever dream. Back to wondering if there'll be a Spielberg movie anytime soon, eh?

I think there is a HUGE difference between a production tracking in music recorded for another film (from another studio) to be used as underscore, vs having new music recorded which bears a striking resemblance to an existing composition

John Williams duelling with Dudamel and stepping onto to the podium next to him and “co-conducting” The Imperial March is simply amazing, hilarious and charming at the same time.

It’s so great to see that Williams at 91 is having the time of his life, enjoying every second of it. What a living LEGEND.

You know what, I just let enjoy people whatever they like. But yes, it is a shame so many people don't connect with it, especially knowing it "might" be the last thing they'll hear from him in terms of big blockbuster scores like this. But then, I do remind myself that having been around this forum for about 21 years now, every new work he's done since then tends to grow on people over time. I can remember people complaining about the first Harry Potter being Williams on autopilot and Across the Stars being the least inspired thing he's ever written. Not to mention his highly inventive action music from the prequels was branded bland and boring. The expectations are so high every time that nothing short of second coming of Christ will do. But I am fairly confident people will look more fondly at this music in the future. So all is good.

I am not surprised at any aspect of the score because Williams has being going through this creative "retrospective" (for lack of a better work) for the past 18 years. You can tell he feels content with how the things are and doesn't feel pressure anymore to reinvent himself (that ended with Geisha and Munich, more or less). I am sure he does the film if he feels like it and does it out of pure joy of collaborating with younger filmmakers. Which, at his age, must be a source of great joy for him. To see his "Swiss watch-like" artistry applied to anything new these brings me a lot of pleasure on its own terms. He absolutely doesn't  need to feel any pressure to bring that smirk to my face, and yet he does waste his precious time and energy to do just that. I feel quite blessed.

Went to see the movie with my stepfather, thought that'd be a nice thing to do together. My experience was completely ruined by a bunch of arrogant little brats right next to me who couldn't shut their mouths for one damn second and were so damn caught up scrolling through their friggin' Instagram feed they probably saw diddly-squat of the actual movie ... Where is Anakin when you need him?

If he is nominated, it will be the last hurrah for Golden Age (oh, alright, Silver Age) Hollywood.
At the moment, it's all "drone" this, "wailing" that, and "sonic landscape" the other.
Like it, or not, JW is the last purveyor of quality scores which harken back to a different era in film scoring, and a different era in filmmaking.

After my first proper listen I must say that I started to pick up on more thematic connections, and there are some great tracks that didn't stood out to me that much in the movie, probably because they were mixed a bit low.

The best parts are when Williams dissects Helena's theme in action mode, especially in tracks like The Airport, but I'm starting to like more and more the two ideas associated with Archimedes and the Dial, both appearing in the last couple of minutes of the Prologue. I also like how that track serves as a sort of overture presenting all the main new ideas for the movie, even if I haven't been able yet to identify all the evil / nazi themes, as they tend to bleed into each other a bit.

I will definitely give it many more listens, and it works great as a listening experience, and from what I can recall from watching the movie, nothing really that important is missing, apart from some action cues being longer, and some thematic statements from early in the movie being also missing.

I'm  so worried about the fact that this might be Williams' last score!!! What would all those fuckface negative 'fans' do with their lives?! Seriously.
From HP I have read so many comments about how JW has lost it, too old, cannot write memorable themes etc..  Almost a race, who will be the first to bash a new score. Get a life, start to listen to Trump's speeches or to analyse Hansu's scores. Or start to drink like me.
