In my John-Williams-score-release-week content frenzy, I ended up back at the Filmtracks review of TLJ, and I understood for the first time why people say that “Peace and Purpose” contained the seeds of a full-on Kylo Ren concert suite.  That third phrase that appears after the usual two sounds so inevitable once you notice it, and if you just tack on a second playing of the second phrase, you’ve got a nice little four-line stanza. Now add a nice B theme and presto! (I don’t think the existing mournful B theme is enough, though.)

My absolute #1 would be a concert piece for orchestra and choir that combines the Ark and Medallion themes from Raiders.

Just got back from seeing TFA LTP at the Chicago Symphony last night.  Man, what a score to hear live!  My brother and I assumed our usual CSO practice of loitering on the main floor, enjoying the atmosphere and legroom, until the real buyers of our seats arrived—but this time, they never came!  So we enjoyed the whole movie from the fourth row!

This was one of my last live Holy Grails among the available scores (Superman is still out there), and it was a delight.  The opening chord blew the socks off the version on the sequel trilogy OSTs, Rey's Theme finally managed to overpower the sound of her speeder, and I was actually able to perceive Scherzo for X-Wings during the bombing run.  The brass was fantastic as always, but Williams' action music for strings shone particularly brightly live (maybe because violins and cellos are about all you see from the main floor—but boy, do you see them!  We managed to recognize and compliment a cellist on his way out of an alley after the show.)  "Follow Me" and "The Falcon" were electric, and the live performance had a way of dragging this orchestrational novice into appreciating the athletic string figures that underpin the melody.

Best of all, the unbelievable "Jedi Steps and Finale" (which nearly the entire house stayed to enjoy) ended with the revised—and apparently now, definitive—ending that's on John Morris Russell's "Voyage" recording, that bombastic and celebratory interpolation of Luke's theme into the usual fanfare that ends the finale in "A New Hope."  It's my favorite Williams revision of all time!

If you ever have the opportunity to see TFA live, don't miss it.  This cemented that score as my favorite Williams work of the past 20 years.

I was underwhelmed by the Jungle Cruise score when I first heard it, but a few months ago I gave it another chance and I really like it! It's not as good as JNH's other classic Disney scores (few things are) but it's still a lot of fun.

I don't know how I would compare it to Dial of Destiny though... They're different beasts.

While doing the Oscar run for The Fabelmans, he talked about Spielberg's dad and how he lived to be 100. Said he's got 10 more years and Spielberg is hard to say no to.

We'll get a new Williams score in a year or two. Depends on whether or not he gets that Bond movie.

I've slightly lost the 'hey, this is good!' factor I got when I first heard it. I think I was mostly just pleased that this score doesn't have the massive problem KotCS has in its mid section.

I also think that generally, the action here is nowhere near as good as Williams used to do. He's got some very fun orchestration and melody in places, but the structure, build-ups and general excitement I get from (some random ones) Quidditch, Third Year or T-Rex Rescue just aren't here and it strongly feels to me like after the Airport/Syracuse cues, it just sort of stops without any proper resolution.

Tuk Tuk does have the nice action treatment of Helena's theme, but when it's not doing that it's just typical Williams zylophone and racing strings. There's absolutely zero new or unexpected going on here.

I guess I'm concluding that overall this is a fine job and has a sprinkling of moments where he came up with something really nice, but the man's 90 and is understandably using reliable, but very much trodden techniques for the most part.

I know it’s mentioned a lot, but I’m not sure we really recognise how incredible it is that this music was written and mostly conducted by a 90 year old man. Most people his age are either dead or not eating solid foods. I know we have some legitimate complaints about the album presentation, use of older themes etc, but how many other 90 year olds are active and working, let alone writing a cue like “To Athens”. It is an astonishing achievement whatever you think of the soundtrack. Just listen to the orchestrations in “Tuk Tuk to Tangiers”. A man who statistically should be dead sat down at his piano and came up with that. I remember back in 2015 when we all freaked out because he’d pulled out of writing music for Bridge of Spies and 8 years later he’s conducting at the premiere of the 5th Indiana Jones movie. Blessed we be.

    Voller Theme 1

     Archimedes Theme

    Dial Of Destiny Theme 1

    (So many bad guy themes/motifs).

Also there are SEVERAL other short motifs. This is a dense score. It will take crowdsourcing effort from all of us to nail all of this down.

That's a complex question. In terms of spending money to hear John Williams music, I would posit you do not have a problem, and given the situation and common courtesy, your actions are entirely consistent with the members of this message board. (So, you have a problem, but we all have the same problem and that's ok.)

But we can question a few things you may want to work into your travel planning. 1. Always expect to need to hear John Williams music. Pack at least 3 pairs of earphones in case the first 2 break. Keep a set of 3 in all your bags. Cannot have enough redundancy. 2. If you did not buy the most expensive headphones (not just overpriced) at the shop, are you really showing enough care for the Maestro's music? 3. How could you even plan to travel when a soundtrack is imminently going to release. I mean they gave us 2 weeks notice, and you didn't change your trip?

And finally - why did you need headphones. Shouldn't you be playing your phone on super loud so everyone on the plane and in the airport can be uplifted with their dose of John Williams?

Have a safe trip and enjoy the music!
