In honor of the Maestro I painted this little portrait the evening before the Royal Albert Hall concert in my hotel room in London.
Let's all hope for his full recovery!!

@MSM That's amazing! His face looks a little too red and flushed, but awesome work.

I used to love watching this! The recording sessions of TPM (the Making Of on the DVD). Hard to believe that was 19 years ago....

It's a bad decision whether you hold Arnold's score in high regard or not.

Taking Arnold off this film is the worst idea in the long sad history of bad ideas and I'm gonna be there when Emmerich learns that.

While we're on the subject of HOW FUCKING AWESOME Arnold's score is, can someone kindly explain how not only was he snubbed for the Oscar but he didn't even receive a nomination?! In a year with two separate Best Music categories, no less. Talk about blatant Academy elitist snobbery.

I'll cop flack for this, but most of these are Oscar-bait dust-collectors:

    Best Music, Original Dramatic Score
The English Patient: Gabriel Yared (W)
    Hamlet: Patrick Doyle
    Michael Collins: Elliot Goldenthal
    Shine: David Hirschfelder
    Sleepers: John Williams

Best Music, Original Musical or Comedy Score
    Emma: Rachel Portman (W)
The First Wives Club: Marc Shaiman
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz
James and the Giant Peach: Randy Newman
    The Preacher's Wife: Hans Zimmer

What a shame they couldn't get Will Smith and David Arnold wasn't even invited to the party. It just feels like a fake sequel to me as a result.

Isn't a fanboy someone who loves everything about something? I'm just being critical. WB clearly didn't care about continuity, and for me that's okay when you have someone like Doyle or Desplat who reinvents the genre, but most of Hoopers cues sound as simple as you can possibly get. If you want more proof of the fact that Hooper didn't have a clue what he was doing, you should watch the music documentary on the HP4 ultimate edition. It's hilarious to compare Hooper's quotes to what the story requires and what he finally ended up doing.

Wasn't it? Are you saying that there are people at WB who give a shit about HP music?

I love JWs action cues maybe better than his themes. His action cues are so musicallly and artistically well constructed that they're often much more interesting than the mein themes. There's so much going on regarding instrumentation, harmonization and counterpoint, it's AMAZING how much effort JW's seems to put in his action music.

To paraphrase Brahms: whatever material JW uses as action music and underscore, people like us use for contructing our main themes.

I can rewind 2:42-3:49 all day long... The violin part from 2:42 onward is one of the most thrilling violin parts ever written in an orchestral score!!
Btw, this cue is influenced by Bartok's 'Miraculous Mandarin' score, for who's interested

I totally agree. Williams' underscoring (action and non-action) was the main reason I became a fan, more than his themes.

On 1999 (...) I met someone who looks like Williams, I was doing short films for someone who yell after me " What , You met with him and didn't call to us ? " LOL !!! The second pic was taken at Barbican on 1996 !

MSM got a reaction from Bespin in What do you think of Williams's non film work?
His concert music is very heterogenic.
I love most of his incidental music such as his marches for networks and the Olympics, which are very thematic, but emotionally more or less one-dimensional. My favorites are Call of the Champions, We're Looking Good!, Scherzo for Today,  Pops on the March, and Olympic Spirit. His concertos are much more intellectual. Over time they have grown much on me. I very much like his Treesong, Clarinet Concerto, Trumpet Concerto, Elegy for Cello and Orchestra, mostly because of the amazing colors and orchestrations. Very inspiring on a deeper level, but still esthetically pleasing, not unlike Szymanowski's works.
