The Battle Of Tangiers

I reckon you meant to say Battle of Algiers, MattyO, unless there's some similarly-titled porno version I don't know about. :D

I've been listening to Mr. Majestyk which arrived on my doormat on Tuesday. It's so kewl!

Oh, whoops! That would explain why I've been having trouble finding it. I'm pretty sure I read a poem once called The Battle of Tangiers, thus why I'm getting it confused with Algiers.

Before going to the Hollywood Bowl, I went over to Amoeba Records... :o Wow.

I got:

Nixon

Born on the Fourth of July

The Missouri Breaks

Frost/Nixon

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Expanded)

Milk

Les Choristes

That has got to be the greatest store I have ever been in.

I'm hoping for individual mono releases in the next year or so. I don't want to splurge for the box set if it's missing the albums that weren't in mono, that's irrelevant I'd much rather the Beatles piss off their fans by selling them individually after the expensive box sets are all gone. Especially because I'm finding it hard to talk myself out of splurging on another three digit soundtrack set...

I've actually found it's more cost effective to buy all the albums individually, because it actually works out to less money that way - at least where I'm buying from. So I figure I'll just spread them out over the next couple weeks.

That is true if you intend to buy the stereo albums. All the stereo albums individually cost less than the box set, which makes me think there are some special promo items in the box set, or it's just to have the cool box and packaging.

But the mono albums aren't sold separately, at least not yet. So you have a choice between the over-priced mono box set (missing a few albums) and...no mono albums.

The geek in me is tempted to buy the stereo albums, and convert them to mono myself using Audacity, because chances are that I won't be able to tell the difference. The lazy side of me, though, has control of the credit card.

There are 17 discs in the Stereo box set, with a price of $180. That's about $10 per disc, while separately they're $12-13. How does that add up to less? Even if you subtract the DVDs from the set to get it to 14, you end paying the same amount separately.

Now, would that work? I thought the stereo mixes were completely different from the mono mixes. It's not just a matter of left-right placement.

But some of the albums, such as Past Masters and The White Album, are 2-disc sets, which gives you the higher disc count in the box set. Individually the 2-disc sets go for no more than $15-16 - but at basically $10 a disc in the box set (if you include the DVDs) that raises the worth of those sets to about $20. If I wanted the DVDs I would spring for the box I think, but they just don't interest me enough. The mini-docs on the CDs themselves are enough for me. And again, the ability to spread out the purchases is appealing to me - I have a hard time plunking down so much money at once!

Okay, I didn't know those albums were 2 discs, so the total disc count for the entire catalogue is 16. I just added up all the albums separately as priced on Amazon. The total comes to $170. $10 less than the box set. I'd rather pay the $10 and get the DVD plus the cool box.

I'm pretty sure that it would not work that easily. I think the band put more time into balancing the mono presentations, and treated the stereo versions more casually. The individual tracks within each song are presented differently in stereo versus mono. If you just dump the stereo versions into mono, sure, you'll get a mono version, but it will be inferior next to the "real" mono presentation only available in the box set. I'm pretty sure they considered that when they remastered both versions and created the special box.

Is this a big deal? I've been listening to stereo versions and radio edits of Beatles songs all my life, and haven't ever really had a problem. The only reason I'd want the mono albums is that everyone lauds them so much, so I think they must be special. But without hearing the "real" mono set, I wouldn't know how much better it sounds compared to a stereo mix squeezed into mono.

Yes, I do believe that the mono mixes are much lauded because they do have a different mix from the stereos, different takes even.

Today we had a huge useditems market in our hometown and I bought alot of CDs

Deep Impact - Horner

:)

Sounds great, that "huge used items market" ... Where do you live, Padmé? I'd love to pay your hometown a visit the next time this market comes around ... ;):D

Bring a map and a dictionary. They refuse to put of Slovenian signs. ;)

No need for a dictionary, I'm pretty much fluent in German :) As for the map, my trusty Garmin 255WT would gladly do the job ... :D

Today, I've noticed that seemingly all the "regular" Beatles records (e. g. no Anthologies, Live at the BBC ...) came out as new 2009 digital remasters with stickers stating: "newly remastered audio - for the first time ever; limited edition - deluxe package; includes new liner notes and rare photos; plus mini-documentary video for Mac or PC". Being a hardcore Beatlomaniac for almost 20 years, this was more than enough for me to immediately grab Yellow Submarine, Sgt. Pepper and the White Album. I'm listening to the latter as I type and it really sounds great, and the packaging is also great. Damn, looks like I'll have to re-buy my complete Beatles collection all over again ... :P:D

It was the "Klagenfurter Altstadtzauber" many Recordstores from Vienna were there of which I know they have quiet a Soundtrack collection, but of course most of them left the OSTs in the shop in vienna... :)

A and recently purcheased

Braveheart - didn't have that one :D

Apocalypto

The New World

Legends of a Fall

The Spiderwick Chronicles

(Yes I couldn't allow that Hans Zimmer was the composer I had the most CDs right after Williams, so I decided to give Mr Horner a try)

It's actually fun, me and my friend we put the CD in and try to find the Danger motif :)

Lady in the Water

The Mummy Returns

Beowulf

Yep, but you see, The Beatles are my religion. So yesterday was pretty much bigger than Chirstmas. I've yet to get the Rock Band though, they're not selling the bundle in this place.

That was fast, apparently Bruce Kimmel was afraid this wouldn't sell well because the precious release was unlimited. I think this is probably the most exciting release from Kritzerland so far though, at least for me. Though they've put out some GREAT stuff.

I'm sure you'd like the two Elfman tracks, Nick. It might not be worth your time if you aren't a fan of Smith's acoustic rock. I think it's really touching.

The Resistance - Muse

Even bigger than before. Even stronger Queen influence this time. Some Chopin moments and the much-discussed Williams bit (easily recogniseable and possible intentional, but nowhere nearly as objectionable as some make it to be... if this were severe plagiarism, Williams himself would have been in trouble several times, and Horner would be sitting in jail). After a few listens, I wouldn't call it their best so far, but it's definitely still Muse, and it's still very fine. Favourite song so far: Guiding Light.

Philadelphia Stories/UFO

Fire and Blood/MotorCity Triptych/Raise the Roof - Daugherty

Finally got myself some Daugherty. Cool stuff. Is there a recording of Hell's Angels available yet, by the way?
