I've only scene the following (In order of preferance):

1. X-Men: The Last Stand

2. The DaVinci Code

3. Cars

4. Mission: Impossible - III

I liked the first three, was unimpressed with the fourth.

My favorite film of the year so far is still V for Vendetta, by a serious margin.

1. X-Men: The Last Stand

2. Mission: Impossible III

That's all I've seen.

I watched Batman Begins last night on DVD, though, and it kicks both these films' combined asses.

I'm rating these out of five.

1. X-Men: The Last Stand ***

2. Mission: Impossible 3 ***

3. The Da Vinci Code **1/2

4. Poseidon **

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest **

Not very good so far, I'd say. I did have high hopes for Superman Returns but now I'm not so sure. I'll be seeing it over the weekend, though.

The only film I've been truly impressed with this year is United 93. I have no objection to "serious movies", but it would be nice to have a TRULY great popcorn film once in a whilte, wouldn't it? :?

I'll put those that I have seen in order from favorite to least favorite, and I'll rate each one (though you will find that I tend to rate very generously):

1. Superman Returns (A+)

2. Cars (A+)

3. The DaVinci Code (A+)

4. Nacho Libre (A)

5. X-Men: The Last Stand (B)

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (B-)

I sure hope I didn't forget any movies.

Indeed :mrgreen:

I only saw The Da Vinci Code and X -Men and I thought both of them were quite awful. I agree with Morlock, V is my favorite movie of 2006 thus far.

Romão, who loved the graphic novel.

Last year, at this time, I had seen 3 blockbusters that I loved: ROTS, BB and WOTW. This year, zero so far, but I still haven't seen SR or POTC.

BTW, I don't think I ever wrote as many acronyms in one post.

Yeah, last summer was better. I haven't liked much of anything this summer. Everything's bland and boring. My faves from last summer were definitely Batman and Star Wars.

Star Wars came out in 77,

Revenge of the Sith came out last year, thank God there won't be anymore

Last summer was very good in terms of mainstream fare. Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, and Kingdom of Heaven were all good films. Like them or not, all of them were genuine films, using their mainstream blockbuster "status" to be real movies with real stories, not soulless wrecks like many other Hollywood summer ventures, as this summer has shown. All my hopes this summer now ride on Lady in the Water, Miami Vice, and (yes) Talladega Nights.

If this summer isn't too good though, rest assured that the Fall movie season will be one for the ages. You heard it here first.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Miami Vice. It seems Jamie Foxx is taking the Cuba Gooding Jr. formula of flushing his career down the toilet after winning an Oscar.

I don't trust Jamie Foxx. I trust Michael Mann. I'm not expecting greatness from it; I want an atmospheric gritty action picture. Early word is negative, but because it's directed by Mann, I reserve some hope.

1) POTC2: 9/10 (great fun)

2) The Omen: 7.5/10 (fairly solid remake, none too shabby)

3) Superman Returns: 7/10 (dull, inconclusive ending to an otherwise excellent movie)

4) MI3: 6.5/10 (fun, but we've seen it all before, and better)

5) DaVinci Code: 5.5/10 (boring, plodding adaptation of a fun, paper-chase adventure book)

you've got time to see 10 movies in less than months?

Yes. And I shouldn't limit it to the Fall. I meant the rest of 2006. We will have new films by Brian DePalma, Sofia Coppola, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuaron, Ridley Scott, Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Gondry, Clint Eastwood, and Steven Soderbergh. There's ten films I'll be seeing. And there's many more.

Let's analyze a very simple thing:

. Superman Returns --> Sequel/Remake (based on a major comic-book)

. X-Men: The Last Stand --> Sequel (based on a major comic-book)

. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest --> Sequel

. The DaVinci Code --> Adaptation of a major best-seller

. Mission: Impossible - III --> Sequel

. Poseidon --> Remake

And you should count also Scary Movie 4, Big Momma's House 2, The Omen, The Pink Panther and Ice Age 2... Whoa... talk about original ideas! The only exception to the rule seems to be Disney/Pixar's Cars, while other original (?) films are fluffy comedies nobody will remember in six months.

Hollywood's creativity is in REAL troubles, especially if we talk about the so-called summer big blockbusters spectaculars.

Bride of Frankenstein: sequel

Gone With The Wind: adaptation

Ben Hur (1959): second remake!

The Wizard of Oz: remake/adaptation

The Philadelphia Story: adaptation from play

Lack of wholly original ideas in cinema is nothing new. Literally. :wave:

They're remaking Strangers on a Train, so I guess they'll remake anything. Even Ben-Hur. And it'll have a Media Ventures score! And it'll star Matt Damon! And it will be directed by Michael Bay!

I know I'm new here, so maybe I shouldn't toot my horn, but DUDE! Do you ever have anything good to say about anything ever?

don't call me Dude, Im too old to be called dude.

yes, I am the oldest JW fan on this board, I love much/most of his stuff, and my passion is for good movies, though some would debate my choices as well. I think too many movies are really aimed at ritilin driven individuals who can't say 4 words slowly without pitching a fit.

besides the movie you mentioned really looks stupid, and geekky.

I saw Superman Returns last night. I couldn't help it; when the Krypton music started playing at the start I couldn't not like it.

So I liked it a lot. That's all I can really say. The score, outside of the Williams music, didn't do much for me so I listened to the Superman soundtrack when I got home.

But yeah, it gets an A from me.
