Upcoming Films

To change the subject somewhat, the latest Empire has an advert for a film called Basement. The film itself is inconsequential, it starts Danny Dyer and is undoubtedly moronic, but it's the way it's being exhibited. At the bottom, it says "in cinemas August 20". Then next to it, it says "Also available August 20 on FilmFlex, Sky Box Office, iTunes, Lovefilm and the PS Network". Next to that, it says "on DVD and Blu-Ray August 23".

This is pretty remarkable, and reminds me of what Mark Kermode once said in regards to how to solve piracy: release it day and date in cinemas, on home video, online and what have you and let people decide. Whether the filmmakers followed Kermode's lead or not, I'm not sure, but I'd love for this to become the done thing, and I think even with the perceived loss in box office takings, the slack would be taken up by the viewing opportunities being opened up to a great many people.

Here's the first trailer for that Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary thing

It's not a mockumentary

Apparently, many reviewers thought it was. I heard that it has more male nudity than most gay porn films.

Also, there's supposed to be a scene where somebody gets into an argument with Pheonix and proceeds to poop on him as he sleeps. This is a real movie...

Of course it's a mockumentary; Phoenix didn't really lose his shit and decide to quit acting to become a rapper, it was a put on to get a funny movie made out of it. On his Letterman appearance you can see him immediately get out of character and shake Letterman's hand just as it cuts to commercial

I don't think those things by themselves make a good movie, though. If the plot is absurd and dense, I can't help but dislike it. Trust me, The Fountain would easily be in my top 10 favorite scores of all time, but the movie itself is just plain dumb and the artistic aspects can only help so much.

It frustrates me with that movie, too. A lot of people say what you say which I guess is a valid argument, but I noticed a lot of the time these are the same people(not necessarily you) who say Avatar was bad because it lacked plot and was all special effects and screen magic. Well, aren't they kind of the same thing?

I can understand finding the plot dense, but I simply loved every moment of it. First time I was confused because I decided to watch on TV and missed the first 10-15 minutes. Second time was extraordinary and third was sublime.

Kinda like Inception actually

The imagery and cinematography ... are what make it stand above all the rest.

From a production design point of view, it was a Christmas tree. Yes, a classy Christmas tree (with gold ornaments) but a Christmas tree nevertheless. Also notice the bad lighting (smeared faces and painfully exposed makeup) in the beginning of the film.

Pshaw, another Indy movie means another Indy score, and I certainly enjoyed the last one a lot.

That makes a lot of sense. I hope so, too. That would be hilarious.

Pretty old news. I don't know what he's doing officially though, he has a lot of projects on his plate. I thought his 3D CGI/2D animation sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was up next.

Even worse. BTW, it's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - without the (?).

Done right, this could be a 21st century Indiana Jones. Done right. Drake is one of the most likeable new characters in recent years, and not just in games. Casting his role is gonna be tough.

I said when the game first came out: This is what Indy 4 should have been. It has all the right elements. Unfortunately, the film is gonna be crap. O'Russell isn't bad, and I like that he's rewriting the script himself (because I recall the original writers having a bad filmography), but Hollywood will fuck it up. They always find away. Now that it's O'Russell, it will probably be Mark Whalberg.

Not really. Just get Nathan Fillion.

Seriously. Everybody needs to check out Firefly. It's not a huge commitment like some shows—there's only 14 episodes. I dare anyone to watch the pilot ("Serenity") and not get hooked.

Don't make me tease you with the somewhat-misleading promise of Christina Hendricks nudity. :P

Nathan Fillion is the perfect choice for Drake. I don't know if I said it on the board back when the game came out, but I know I talked about it with friends. But as we all know, he won't be chosen. Fillion IS Drake, they even have a similar likeness. Although, the actual voice actor wouldn't be so bad either.

I hadn't looked at this thread in a long time, just saw the above Joss-related discussion. Can I just say that Nathan Fillion is possibly the coolest actor alive? He's awesome in Firefly and Serenity, and I dare you to watch Dr. Horrible without laughing your butt off at his (deliberate) pure cheese performance.
