karelm 2,976
I actually came to understand this from the 1933 film which was on TV this weekend. Carl Denham (Jack Black) realized this was a Beauty and the Beast parable where the beast was obsessed with the beauty resulting in his demise. Kong's obsession with Ann Darrow resulted in his demise. That is the opposite of Jackson's 2005 version where the Beauty was obsessed with the beast so the line made no sense. I can get it for next to nothing. Thanks. It's not a ' score' per se. The CD consists mostly of South Africa vocal performances with folks like Lebo M. I absolutely love this music but if you don't, you may not want to buy this 1977

They literally beat us with dreamy eyed footage of Naomi Watts looking longingly into Kong's eyes and every time I saw that, it made no sense. A classic case of Stockholm syndrome. His musical genius is one thing, but genius doesn't come often with such eye-popping productivity. So one thing to remember is that the endless tributes to his Leone work or selected american scores, i. e. The Mission or The Thing point you to but a tiny fraction of what he did and as someone who relentlessly downloaded everything Morricone off Napster in the early 2000's i can attest tho the fact that many on this list that no one here has ever heard are way better or at least on par with his famous works. 1960s Year Title Director Notes 1960 Run with the Devil Mario Camerini Orchestrations only Score composed by Piero Piccioni, Lipstick Damiano Damiani Orchestrations only Score composed by Giovanni Fusco L'Avventura Michelangelo Antonioni Le Pillole Di Ercole Luciano Salce Rejected score Replaced by Armando Trovajoli 1961 The Fascist First full score The Last Judgment Vittorio De Sica Arrangements and Conducting only Score composed by Alessandro Cicognini, 1962 L'italiano ha 50 anni Francomaria Trapani Orchestrations only Composed by Gino Peguri, Gli Italiani e le vacanze Filippo Walter Ratti N/A I motorizzati Camillo Mastrocinque N/A Crazy Desire Luciano Salce N/A Il Sorpasso Dino Risi Orchestrations only Score composed by Riz Ortolani I due della legione Lucio Fulci Orchestrations only Score composed by Luis Bacalov Eighteen in the Sun Camillo Mastrocinque N/A A Girl...and a Million Luciano Salce N/A 1963 Violenza segreta Giorgio Moser Orchestrations only Score composed by Giovanni Fusco Il Successo Dino Risi N/A Le monachine Luciano Salce N/A El Greco N/A Gunfight at Red Sands Ricardo BlascoMario Caiano First Western film score I basilischi Lina Wertmüller N/A 1964 Una Nuova fonte di energia Daniele G. bollemanneke 3,546
Another question. I found two soundtracks for the Pink Panther Strikes Again, one with 18 tracks and another with 32 tracks. Which of these is an official release, or are they both?

Carl Denham (Jack Black) realized this was a Beauty and the Beast parable where the beast was obsessed with the beauty resulting in his demise. Kong's obsession with Ann Darrow resulted in his demise. That is the opposite of Jackson's 2005 version where the Beauty was obsessed with the beast so the line made no sense. I don't think Jack Black is old enough to have played in the 1933 version.

The OST LP that came out concurrent with the film in 1976 had 12 tracks. In 1998, Rykodisc released the OST LP on CD, where it was followed by 6 bonus tracks (additional cues from the score) bringing it to 18 tracks. In 2014, Quartet Records released a complete edition with 32 tracks, limited to 1,000 copies. bollemanneke
bollemanneke 3,546
Thanks. And I'm guessing that 2014 album made all the others superfluous?
Jay 38,933
I mean it depends on your point of view; It's the complete score so the old albums don't have anything that isn't on it, but you might prefer that particular program, the way Mancini chose to present the score when it was fresh to him. No reason not to check out both programs

Arpy 4,159
So... Thinking about getting Jaws, I never had much interest in the film or the score, but have since come around to liking it. Does anyone know which version is the best/definitive to get, and where to get it from? I'm probably too late after all these years!
Holko 10,028
Film: bluray's great, listen to the mono mix (found in the menu as 2.0), I hear the recent 4k's good too. Score: only the Intrada, sounds the best (not great but the best) and complete... well, was complete, Intrada's out of stock now and they can only bring it back with a different program or something so the next edition won't have the source music with Spielberg on clarinet and stuff. Thanks Holko, is the source music a necessity i.e. composed by Williams?

Two marching band pieces composed by Williams, four non-Williams compositions in a smalltown beach band arrangement. We know there were more pieces recorded too, but Williams didn't allow them to be released, he did allow these. They won't be a gigantic tragic loss but it's still good material that was released before and won't be again. Doug Fake doesn't quite have his story straight yet, first time he talked about this Jaws situation (conveniently only after it all sold out) he said they'd be removing the alternates from disc 1 too and some of those are great to have. You might want to know that the old OST is a great presentation and has quite good sound as well, and used copies are available for pocket change. Holko 10,028
And that it's a rerecording, missing great stuff, sound is still not great by any means, and it's also on the Intrada disc 2 so it'd just be completely redundant to get an early 90s pressing if you also want the real thing sometime down the line. Jurassic Shark 12,841
I pointed out a good option for someone who's not a fanatic about the score and don't want to wait for Intrada to get it out there again. The OST is among the better sounding ones of JW's, and the sound quality is much better than on the complete score. @Arpy, if sound quality is an issue, there's always Varese's rerecording, but that has additional reverb, a few flubbed notes, and somewhat lackluster performance in some tracks. It's still a decent rerecording.
Holko 10,028
I really find the OST's sound a lot less appealing than the score's, I can get used to one but not the other. I have no idea how to describe it either, not enough low end, echoey, sometimes distant, brass and strings sometimes shrill, stereo field can be all over the place and unpleasant, it's just weird. Jurassic Shark 12,841
I rather find the sound on the complete score to be "weird", and someone pointed out this could be because of the bad state of the tapes and all the tweaks Mike had to do to make it sound tolerable. The OST has the definitive, i.e. fully developed, versions of some pieces. I can only calmly listen to Montage if I keep in mind that we also have the full version on the album. The film version sounds like a microedit fest, no matter which version came first.
Holko 10,028
Huh. To me Montage sounds like a perfectly fine snappy little diversion while Promenade feels bloated and meandering in comparison, overstaying its welcome a bit, that early horn solo part especially.
