Nick Parker 3,040
It's one of my absolute favorite films...this is exactly the movie I think of when Hitchcock made commented about films being confined to the proscenium (not surprising given its stage history), but it's so compelling to watch that I don't care. I've watched so many times since I was a teenager, and am never bored by watching one man battle in an underdog struggle to convince eleven strangers that a simple, typical case of a kid on the wrong side of town, might be anything but. I thought the film was unscored outside of the bookends, but there are actually a couple moments where unfortunately neglected Kenyon Hopkins sneaks through and provides some effective music that speaks to the rising ideological stakes of the deliberation. Glóin the Dark 1,223
It's been one of my favourites ever since I accidentally stumbled across a late night TV showing of it as a kid.
Popular Post Unlucky Bastard 7,782
Fifty Shades Freed Faarrrk this was hot. You don't see boobs in movies much these days, they're mostly on snob TV instead. Disappointed there won't be more in this series. And in this era of Trumpian politics and hostility, these are films whose context is important. Working Girl Anyone else think Harrison Ford acted weird in this? Like he wasn't Mr Confidence like he is in other movies. He seemed more... nervous? I dunno. There's one scene where Melanie Griffith looks just like her old girl. We also need to assess the difference in the political climate and these difficult Trumpian times we live, etc. Cleopatra Revisit after 20 years. Seems quaint compared to the TV show Rome, but the production value is unmatched. Did Fox simply want to make this just to outclass all the other studios that had their own Roman epic hits? Did they send the bean counters on holidays when they made this? It's friggin awesome. Also, with Julius Caesar demanding to become Emperor, these are Trumpian themes that the filmmakers were aware of that need discussing in our current political climate. Suddenly, Last Summer "THAT MUSIC! THAT AWFUL MUSIC!" Maybe Liz had musical tinnitus? It's a thing, look it up. But really, I had to look up what people were saying about this movie, because I had trouble following it on my own. I just wanted to see Liz in her prime running around with her big tits flopping out. Of course, with today's Trump thingy wingy and whatever. My Cousin Rachel Livvie was cute in this, as usual, but at 36, I laughed when she was described as "middle aged" -- what?! They did gothic romance almost effortlessly back then. And this one was appropriately twisted and mysterious. We also need to gather insight into the problematic relation to Donald Trump, and America's diminishing role in the world, etc. The Roommate Just to see Billy Zane and Frances Fisher in a movie together again. They don't share any scenes though. By the numbers stalker flick. Women stalkers are also a misogynist thing, has something to do with Donald Trump. Phantom Thread I watched this just after watching an episode of The Bold and the Beautiful that had a fashion show that they do once every few months. DDL is like Ridge Forrester, only he's a total fusspot who'd give you the shits and you'd be forgiven for wanting to poison him too. It's important to note the relation to toxic Trumpian politics. Black Butterfly Decent thriller with a cool twist. It's like Zorro in a mindgame with Dracula! Reminded me of that movie Secret Window. Trump politics play a role somehow, not sure yet. The Barefoot Contessa Eh. Just Joe Mank dog-whistling to his fellow industry insiders, ala Sunset Boulevard, only not as good as that one. Too long, boring and self-indulgent. Structurally it's almost a clone of All About Eve. So boring, it's almost as if Donald Trump wrote it. The Limehouse Golem Borrrrrring! Seriously, eff-off with these stylishly substanceless thrillers! Looked better than it was. Misogynistic reveal, had to be the work of Donald Trump. Wonder Wheel Significant improvement on Cafe Society. Colourful and vibrant facade veils a much darker story with a far grimmer ending than I expected. Woody's most stylish looking film I've seen since Manhattan. Woody Allen is obviously in league with Donald Trump, and this is highly problematic. Butch Sundance and the Cassidy Kid I loved The Sting, but I was disappointed by this. Dunno, it just moved slowly and seemed preoccupied with endless montages. After all the hype and near universal praise, I expected better. Seems like critics weren't inpressed with it in '69 either, but it's become one of those flicks that's been "reassessed" with time - yeah right, their first instincts were correct. One of these bozos could have also been elected president in these dangerous Trumpian times, which are big questions worth exploring. Leave Her to Heaven Aw man if I had Gene Tierney just threw herself at me hehehe but she turned out to be a total whackjob. Like the main guy in the movie, I liked the other girl more too. More wholesome babe. Yet again, I couldn't help sympathising with the Ellen character, especially when she let that irritating brother drown. Poor gal just couldn't get a break. Although it was made a year before he was born, Donald Trump obviously had a hand in pushing for this misogynistic hit piece, just awful. The Young Victoria Anything with Emily Blunt, she makes me have a crush on the 19th century sovereign. Lovely film. But, you guessed it, the Queen's expressed interest in populist politics in this film make it ripe for tenuous Trump links, and we must explore these carefully in these dangerous times. 47 Meters Down Gory shark movie. The kind of problematic rubbish that Trump supporters have helped proliferate. Paul, Apostle of Christ My interest peaked at seeing Jim Caviezel look like, well, Jesus again. As the story is about Emperor Nero persecuting religious minorities, it's important to recognise the dangerous Trumpian politics portrayed here, as the President has been rounding up non-whites across the country and feeding them to tigers in stadiums - we need this movie, now more than ever. Looking Glass Weirdo Nick Cage thriller. Not very good. But the two-way mirror in the motel room is highly representative of these dangerous Trumpian times where pussy-grabbing was declared to be allowed and sexual harassment became mandatory. Winchester Ghosts and guns. It's more disappointing than it sounds. Dull as shit. Makes a case for America's current state of guns, which is a reflection of these dangerous Trumpian times. My Cousin Rachel (remake) Appropriate casting for Rachel Weisz! But the dude lacks the oomph of Richard Burton. Not as effectively gothic romancey as the original but holds its own with a slight twist on her motivations. And in these dangerous Trumpian times, this is something to think about. The Recall Dirt cheap C3TK meets Evil Dead rip-off. Stinker. And in these dangerous Trumpian times. The Dinner This might be my favourite movie I've watched all year, with a quartet of main chatacters grappling with a dilemma that'll impact them and their kids forever. And it's amazing watching it all unfold. I was shocked to see this had only a 4.9/10 rating on IMDb, so obviously this was a very polarising film. A bit narratively messy and hard to follow for some? Maybe, but well worth a watch. And in these dangerous Trumpian times, extreme polarisation is important. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Whoa this was lousy. And I liked the first one enough. Goes to show that these volatile Trumpian times will inevitably lead to WWI, even though he pulled out of Syria. I liked that it promotes hearing protection though. W. Well, an actual film about Donald Trump for once. And we all know about how in these dangerous times of his name, that when he started the war in Iraq and slaughtered countless millions, there was a man behind it all who loved oil, hotels and baseball. I look forward to Stone's eventual movie about George Rumsfeld. Fuck it, here's the rest...
