Popular Post Ricard 2,245
I've been thinking about doing this for a long time, but never found the right moment to work on it. Now I've realized that it's as easy as start a thread and compile as many dates as people may want to add. You can copy/paste all the events already posted by others and add them to your post, or simply add a bunch of new ones and someone else will make and updated list, which will be added to this main post on a regular basis. All kinds of events attended by the Maestro, awards/nominations, concerts, recording sessions, even original album releases, are welcome to the list. Here's a start with some examples: 1932/02/08 - John Towner Williams is born in Queens, New York 1976/03/29 - John Williams wins his 2nd Academy Award for the original score for Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" 2020/01/29 - John Williams wins the Grammy Award in the Best Instrumental Composition category for his "Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite" 2020/01/31 - Jim Svejda interviews John Williams on KUSC Radio 2020/02/08 - John Williams saluted at the Society of Composers & Lyricists’ annual Oscar music reception 2021/07/24 - John Williams conducts the World Premiere of his "Violin Concerto No. 2" at Tanglewood, with Anne-Sophie Mutter on violin 2021/08/14 - John Williams conducts the World Premiere of his new work "Overture to the Oscars" at Tanglewood Feel free to expand the event descriptions, as long as they're not too long (this isn't a biography but a chronological list). I'm sure it'll be fun! Steve 593
I'm recently working on a JW conducting/concert history. Will share it later in the year here. The BSO archive lists all concerts of the Pops and BSO, but are missing concerts outside Boston. And of course Johnny was quite active with other orchestras around the US. The Lost Folio 183
This is a really great idea. But I think it would work a lot better as a website, maybe a wikipedia-type page that people can freely edit. I can imagine a JW chronology having at least 1000 dates (100+ score recordings and releases, 100+ concert works premieres and major performances, several hundred concerts, etc.) The project is cool but daunting for a forum! @Jay, just wondering, would such a page be possible somewhere on jwfan or would there need to be (yet) another JW-dedicated website? Jay 37,364
If I understand Ricard's intentions properly (which I have been known to epicly fail at more than once, but I think I got this one right), he is going to do exactly that: Take all the information people post in this thread, and combine it all together in one place - the main post of this thread. Jay 37,364
That was how I was going to do it, yea. So you could see just his recording session dates, just his published interviews, just his concert work premieres, etc. It's a lot of work though, which is why I hadn't started yet - got some other projects to launch first. Not sure how we don't step on each others toes but it could work! Really I just wanted to offer up what I've done so far if it helps anyone. To be fair this isn't even my master copy as that is housed in what I've lovingly nicknamed my Williams MEGA Sheet that has records of all the releases (no where near as detailed as Bespin's Discography just a place to keep track of what release has what, sources recording dates etc.) I've also been working on a listing of orchestra members and marking which scores they played on so we can visually see how the makeup of some of these great organizations have changed over the years. It also houses links to all of the digitized liner notes I've been working on that contain both searchable text copies of ever Williams liner note in my collection as well as PDF copies of ones I can source the images for (I haven't gotten brave enough to flatted spines for scanning my own yet) as well as copies of all of the amazing sheets @Jay has been so kind to share with us over the years (linked back to his originals of course ) 3 hours ago, Ricard said: This is wonderful! I think the merits here have more to do with being able to see the raw data at a glance and for me it's thrilling to start piecing together each year, which is half the fun, and when you look at it realize just how much Williams does and how all the pieces fit together... awards ceremonies with recording the next day and concerts and interviews the list goes on. I think Tim's book is going to be something to experience and dive into where it will tell us the stories and anecdotes from the people that were there giving us a sense of the emotion of it all where something like this takes that data and gives us the 50 thousand foot view where we can at a glance an idea of what his life has been like and frankly is still like... Look at 2023! whew that is one busy 91 year old! The Lost Folio 183
Really great idea! I like how you lay out the information. I agree that this raw data is as essential for research as a full biography. Suggestion: do you think it would be possible to add a column with the source? We might avoid debates later on if every entry says where the information is pulled from (ex: LLL booklet (including page #), newspaper article, Oscars website, etc.). It may be a bit academic, but hey, why are we here anyway? 🧐 Good luck! It's a great start already! I'm sure we'd all like to contribute.
Holko 9,526
My suggestion for a bit of legibility: the different colors in the left columns for the different types of events is a good idea, but what if the colors were instead applied to the background of the entire row? Just the faintest least saturated variants, would help a bit maybe with a quicker overlook, "damn he had a lot of concerts this year" etc.

It may be a bit academic, but hey, why are we here anyway? 🧐 Good luck! It's a great start already! I'm sure we'd all like to contribute. @The Lost Folio Let me start off with saying I absolutely agree here... in fact I've started adding these to newer additions. This started just as a "for me" kind of thing just to see the data and was never going to be "academic" but I started wanting more info on pieces and have started adding some links in where I can... NOW the "fun" ie: tedious part would be going back and finding all the sources again For some items like the recording dates we have things like the liner notes we can source. But for a lot of it we really only have digtal sources at this point and have the complication of the fact that the internet changes all the time. Sources become available and disappear all the time. I'm sure @Ricard @Jay and others run into this where linking back to sources break after awhile, be it Youtube videos, Site redesigns, or content removed sites change. A good example and I think it's been handled well on JWfan is if you look at the expanded releases page on the main site. If you go back in that list to 2011-2012 and before they are all linked to external sources... Now in 2023 some of those links still work and some don't which means we've "lost" some of the data from those sources. After that you will notice every link goes to a JWfan source that archives the content. That's a great solution for a site like this but for a sheet like this project may be problematic and also why the vast majority of my new links are going to JWfan as these guys have already done the work Another hiccup and illustration of the changing internet/first party sources I'm trying to overcome is best served with an example. Sticking with recording dates. The dates for Raiders aren't in a what I would call easy to point to first party source. They aren't in the liner notes for the DCC edition nor the 2008 Concord (if you want to call what was in that version liner notes). Here's the issue, The LSO published all of their recording sessions online several years ago and we were able to get the dates for Raiders and other LSO recordings. That online resource is now gone (from my understanding) and only some back linked sources that are hard to confirm as official from an academic sense remain. Basically yeah I would love to have more sourcing in the document just struggling with how to source some pieces. Another Example, I got all of the Evening at Pops recording dates from the Pops site... How long will that page stay online? 8 hours ago, Holko said: My suggestion for a bit of legibility: the different colors in the left columns for the different types of events is a good idea, but what if the colors were instead applied to the background of the entire row? That said, now that the sheet is getting more "complicated" for lack of a better term, it may be time to revisit... I'll try it on a few years and see what it does. I'm also currently testing some more formatting working with the expanded releases so that may help as well. Thanks! Miguel Andrade 1,263
Williams did conduct the Boston Pops on tour in LA at the Bowl, around 1978 and/or 79, filling it for an ailing Arthur Fiedler. During the late 70's he started doing a lot more of public conducting, both in LA and in the UK. He appeared at Filmharmonic a few times. Before that he surely had done some public performing (in his teens he had a band and during his time in New York he played in clubs with Vic Damone and others, including the prestigious Copacabana), but it was cut down has he become more engaged with the Hollywood studios work. He also did some band directing in Las Vegas, in the late 50's or early 60's. There was a concert, in the early 60's that featured his music from Checkmate, I think at the Hollywood Bowl, but I can't recall right now if he was one of the conductors. KittBash 282
2 hours ago, Jay said: How do you add a filter to a google doc? @Jay There are Filters and there are Slicers. For both options it is a similar setup. Go to the Data menu and choose one of the options (pictured below) It basically has you choose your field ranges / choose a column to use as the filter. Filters and Slicer do very similar things except you cannot have merged cells in the column with filters (hence why the chronology sheet has a slicer). Filters also sit at the top of the column where a Slicer can be placed anywhere on the sheet. Another win for the Slicer is that you can change it to use different columns after it has been created or even just create multiple slicers. Their use and function after that is very similar. Work Premiers - were updated and added Slicer issue fixed - The slicer no longer disappears when you use it All told, Many upgrades to existing lines and over 240 new lines added https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sgepya2i8LU2TPesQRGltWtQJ7yNXDCOubwqDKqwg4I/edit?usp=sharing Next up some missing concert works and hopefully more interviews. ragoz350, Ricard, Once and 1 other

Good work. Some suggestions: It would be useful to add the name of the orchestra in the concert category. It would also make sense to differentiate between concerts conducted by other conducters and Williams himself (e.g. concert premiers by Slatkin). I will post many concert additions later today or this week. KittBash

I agree I've noticed some have it and some don't.... It's on the list 17 minutes ago, Steve said: It would also make sense to differentiate between concerts conducted by other conducters and Williams himself (e.g. concert premiers by Slatkin). Also agree, trying to decide if other conductors should be in the list, I think just the ones where Williams was present at the very least should make the cut. So many things to add... so little time Once and Steve 1
Popular Post KittBash 282
A New update to the Chronology project. We've gone from 932 lines in the first version shared (10 days ago) to now having 2,440+ This time adding Interviews listed on JWFan. Events listed in news and misc categories on JWFan Film and TV Premier dates that contain Williams compositions Pulled in and added/updated every Boston Pops concert I could export from the BSO archive (over 600 entries with Williams conducting) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sgepya2i8LU2TPesQRGltWtQJ7yNXDCOubwqDKqwg4I/edit?usp=sharing Some formatting to come as well as still looking at categorizations and other suggestions I've received. Plus of course still lots to find and add ragoz350, Once, Holko and 3 others 3 1
Jurassic Shark 12,076
Great work, but we're missing an overview of all the versions of the They're All Dead anecdote. KittBash
Jay 37,364
Great work @KittBash, amazing work honestly! All I can offer is humble thoughts on presentation, organization, and consistency. I used the filter to show only "Major Events" and saw this: 1 - Why does "Major Event" one time have a larger font size? 2 - Why is his daugther's birth year listed as 1956, but his son's as "1958/??" in red? All unknown dates should use identical formatting. 3 - Why is the Olympic line in one color, the AFI line in a second color, and the rest in a third color? 4 - How are you defining a "Major Event"? His birth, the years he turned a year ending in 0, his marriages, and the birth of his children make sense. But why is stuff like him being named conductors of the pops, one of his olympic themes debuting, or receiving an AFI award in the same category? I would suggest the creation of a "Personal" category, to store all the stuff that isn't directly related to his music work. Again, just my humble thoughts. You're doing great work! AHH @Jay You have found me out! Yeah, all of these things are true and is something I need to spend some time on. I said in my last post that 23 hours ago, KittBash said: Some formatting to come as well as still looking at categorizations and other suggestions I've received. Plus of course still lots to find and add And you found several glaring reason's why I think it needs to happen ... I've spent so much time cramming as much info in as I can that it's time to do a pass on the presentation and organizational side of things. Another thing that happens is that this is a copy and paste from my master copy where I do all the work and it's not pulling the font weights across as it should... really only the work names should be bold and the rest of the entry is regular font size... I'm looking at a way to import all of this in future updates. For example in the public copy here's part of 2015 Vs my working copy Much easier to scan names visually when everything isn't bold just the names. That and somehow several fonts have crept into the live copy that make it look like a muddied mess as well. So yeah long way to say You are absolutely right and I'm already on it LOL I've already implemented the personal event vs other event types in the working copy. Popular Post Omen II 1,235
This is such a wonderful idea @KittBash and gives some sense of what a hectic lifestyle Williams has led for most of his ninety-one years. Thank you for your hard work on this so far! I can see that you have the Filmharmonic '85 concert listed where John Williams conducted the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London in November 1985, however here are the dates of some of his other conducting gigs in the United Kingdom: 1976/10/30 - John Williams conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Filmharmonic '76 at the Royal Albert Hall 1978/02/16 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in The LSO in Space at the Royal Albert Hall 1980/10/18 - John Williams conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Filmharmonic '80 at the Royal Albert Hall 1982/02/08 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the open air sculpture court at the Barbican Centre in London 1982/02/09 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the open air sculpture court at the Barbican Centre in London 1985/11/16 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Filmharmonic '85 at the Royal Albert Hall 1996/06/26 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1996/06/28 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1996/06/30 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1998/07/01 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1998/07/02 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1998/07/03 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London 1998/07/04 - John Williams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London KittBash, Ricard, Jay and 1 other 2 1
