John Williams TOP 10 themes

Romão

Recommended Posts

I sugested this a while back. In the same vein of what we did a few years ago concerning the top 10 JW scores, we could try to sum up an "oficial" JWfan.net top 10 of JW's themes or tracks...dunno..establishing criteria of what is indeed considered a theme.

I just think it could be fun.

As a compliment to the screen visuals and the instant evocation of a shark attack this theme conjures,it may warrent a place in the top 10,but I find that as a standalone musical piece it does not.

This is kind of fun to think about. I think Jaws would be an obvious choice for a top theme if we're thinking in terms of impact or noteriety (and maybe we are). But I'm going to go the imprecise route of thinking about personal favorites.

1. Han and Leia?s Theme

2. Born on the Fourth of July main theme

3. Far and Away Love Theme

4. JFK - Main Theme

5. Jurassic Park, non-fanfare main theme

6. AI - theme heard in Blue Fairy encounter and later in the film

7. The Force Theme

8. Theme for American Journey, Civil Rights and Women?s Movement

9. Jane Eyre main theme

10. Nixon Turbulent Years Theme

This little list has helped me to conclude that JW needs to score more Oliver Stone films (preferably good ones).

You can never give this enough thought, so this is something I'll surely regret later:

1. Monica's Theme from AI

2. "Smallville" theme from Superman

3. "The Raiders March" (never works as well in a concert version as it does as underscore)

4. "Cadillac of the Skies" from Empire of the Sun

5. March from 1941

6. Main theme from Always

7. Main theme from Jurassic Park

8. "Duel of the Fates"

9. Main theme from Jaws

10. "A Window to the Past" theme from Prisoner of Azkaban.

-Ross, wondering where should the Grail theme go.

any lists that leaves off Princess Leia's theme or the Love Theme from Superman are totally suspect.

Joe, who wants no part of doing the Official JW Top 10 Theme list. The other was too much work, too many pms and just too many damned themes to try to narrow down.

Well, I like it a lot; it carries a distinct aura of "forbidden love." :D

Jaws? Does it have a theme?

True. It's not really a theme. Although I think it's one of his best scores.

What really constitutes a theme though? It could be considered a motif more than a theme. Themes develop and variate, something you really can't do with two notes. Then again, "theme" and "leitmotif" have become interchangeable, and as the shark does have its own leitmotif I guess it could be called a theme... Whatever...

Yes, but just listen to the Main Titles. It may be those two notes, but it just builds and builds and builds into this great crescendo. That's really the greatest part about those two notes, they way it devolops, and the way it makes you feel like there's really coming something at you.

Jaws? Does it have a theme?

JW sure can't lay claim to the two-note motif, but his arrangement of it has some real thematic material. There's the horn motif, (VII-bIII-VI), and the, uh, good guy theme? Sorry, I haven't seen the film. But, you know, it's the one that play midway through the main theme on the glockenspiel.

Majestic theme from Pops on the March

That would have made my "Top 10 Worst Williams Composition" list.

Like most SW crap would fill in mine.

MSM - wondering if KM ever heard Pops on the March anyway.
