Richard Penna 3,696
Yeah we knew it would be a long release - Silva said it would have two full scores last year. It's just taken forever to be announced. We've gone from two seasons on one CD to two complete episode scores... just when I'd suspected maybe Gold was losing interest in releasing it. I guess he was just very busy. Maybe, just maybe, he took a look at season 10 while he was there... complete the book before he moves onto something new entirely. Naïve Old Fart 9,556
If this is to be the last DW Murray Gold release, then it's a more-than-fitting way to sign-off. It's been a great ride. Thank you, Mr. Gold, and thank you, Silva.
CGCJ 394
53 minutes ago, Richard Penna said: Yeah we knew it would be a long release Despite having an additional disk it's still about 30 minutes shorter than the series 8 release (based purely on the two and a half hour overall run time, but without track times we don't know specifically), and it seems like quite a few episodes are barely represented; just look for The Witch's Familiar, Before the Flood or Sleep No More (I don't remember there being any music in the episode, though). It seems like there's far too little here for 4 discs and it has been pointed out elsewhere that it seems there's no or very little variations of A Good Man? included, which seems insane. I doubt Heaven Sent or Husbands of River Song are truly complete either (Last Christmas was far from complete on the series 8 release), they always miss off around 1/3 of the score which could easily have fit on the CD. Can't say I'm too disappointed, I don't really remember or care for series 9, but after two years of waiting... 53 minutes ago, Richard Penna said: Maybe, just maybe, he took a look at season 10 while he was there... complete the book before he moves onto something new entirely. When the series 9 release was first announced (when someone emailed BBC Music back in November) it was said a series 10 release will follow shortly, so hopefully that will be announced sometime in the next few months. I think the 2-CD releases are too long anyway - they allow too much of the filler scoring through. I won't complain for a moment though, as it means more choice for us. My current Who playlist (representing 2005 onwards) is a tad over 2 CDs worth. It will be a nice fun challenge when series 10 comes out, to make perhaps a 3-CD compilation of everything. Naïve Old Fart 9,556
There are at least two films called THE SEA DEVILS, or you might be thinking of the Roger Moore/Gregory Peck/David Niven film THE SEA WOLVES. As far as DW is concerned, THE SEA DEVILS hails from the 9th season (Pertwee's 3rd season) and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest DW stories, ever. Malcolm Clarke's score is "off the wall", to say the least, but it's now thought of as a classic. Pieter Boelen

pixie_twinkle 48
For me the two Geoffrey Burgon Who scores from series 13 are the pinnacles of Who scores. A small orchestra with effective use of processing effects. Both scores were released on one CD about 15 years ago. Great stuff! https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Terror-Zygons-Seeds/dp/B00003XB2C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522337339&sr=8-3&keywords=seeds+of+doom+cd For me the music has been an issue with the recent seasons of Dr. Who. In the classic series there would be a main composer for each season, but there would always be guest composers taking over for several stories. It kept the sound of the show fresh, and really helped make stories like Seeds of Doom and Terror of the Zygons (and Sea Devils!) have a distinctive feel. I'd love to see that happen again - several composers used each season. Probably not going to happen, but still something I'd love to see. Naïve Old Fart 9,556
Hey, pixie, long time! By the beginning of Tom Baker's reign, Dudley Simpson had virtually taken up residence as DW composer - then JN-T came along! He did some good scores, GENESIS OF THE DALEKS, being a stand-out. Some of the historical scores (THE MASK OF MANDRAGORA, for one) were great. I recently purchased the Silva CDs of SURVIVAL, and THE DEAD PLANET (sorry, but I'm anal enough to refuse to call it THE DALEKS! ). They are both good, although the "cat" motif played on electric guitar can get a little grating. I'd love to get a complete REMBERENCE...! I'm looking forward to Gold's 4-cd swansong. CGCJ 394
The series 9 soundtrack's great, the only problems I have with it is its far too short to justify 4 discs, and there's some strange edits with cue endings cutoff with reverb (The Ghosts) and many cues combined from all over the episodes (Davros Approaches, Deep Cover). At-least its in chronological order, except for The Husbands of River Song, which has all the tracks from the ship scenes in the wrong order. I had a quick scan through this the day it came out and was pretty disappointed. There is loads of great stuff missing - I love the Ashildir material, and one cue that I can't believe isn't on here is the prep montage with her theme in 'swashbuckling' mode (instead we get some generic action cue). As you said, for a 4 disc set, Gold really hasn't taken the opportunity to fill it up. I'd hate this to be the set that breaks the chain of me buying them - hopefully I can find maybe 20 minutes of good material to justify it. Plus there must be some rights issue with the main theme as it hasn't been on the last two releases. That sucks.
Disco Stu 15,495
Got my copy of the series 9 soundtrack in the mail today. Listening to the "Heaven Sent" score now. Popular Post Marian Schedenig 8,211
Got mine yesterday. Impressions after listening to everything once (and the stuff from the final episodes twice): 1. The first one and a half discs seem like more of the same after S8, and I rarely play anything but the theme and one or two other tracks from that set. 2. The Ashildr stuff sounds like at least the brass is 100% quite synthy synth? Kinda ruins what otherwise seems like nice music. 3. The final episodes are in a different class, with Gold at his usual dramatic and emotional strength. 4. Heaven Sent really is a unique score in the series, just as the episode is unique in its own way. Good to see that Gold really took the time to carry that over to the music. 5. The Shepherd's Boy is a Gold classic, in his special way that gets dangerously close to becoming too poppy and cheesy but never does, because the emotional heart of the cue is genuine. Some of the best Who pieces are made that way. 6. The special sounds fun, too. 7. Very odd sequencing, they could have either included much more, or put everything on fewer CDs. Judging from #1, if the reason is that Gold either didn't have the energy/time, or simply no longer the interest or inspiration to come up with something more engaging for "regular" episodes, perhaps it's really the right choice to leave and let a new composer take over. But I'll still miss him. 8. I like the dedication. "For Maisie. The one and only." Disco Stu, Pieter Boelen and DarthDementous
Disco Stu 15,495
Like I’ve said before, I don’t think it’s anything against Gold that the new producers are going a new direction. 10 years is a long ass time to score a show and creative refreshes are vital to keeping this show on the air for another 50 years! Marian Schedenig 8,211
Oh, certainly. And I rather expect it's his own decision anyway. I'm just not yet convinced that whoever his successor turns out to be can live up to his standard... or in fact that Chibnall might not decide to take a musical direction I'm generally not happy with. The serie's extrovert musical style is at odds with both usual TV/film scoring these days and also Chibnall's own Broadchurch, and at the same time I believe it's an important component of what makes the show so special.
Arpy 4,145
I doubt any of the perceived shortcomings of the scores s8 onwards have been down to Gold's ability to score an episode, but a shift in what the musical language of the show has evolved into. Gone are the strong symphonic scores for episodes, in its place are sparse, minimalist, synth sounds - and I guess that works in it's own way. The way I see it the musical direction hasn't necessarily been a choice of Gold, rather from the producers from up above. There are moments in s9 where Gold sneaks back to some the rich orchestral writing, like The Husband's of River Song or the Zygon episodes, even Heaven Sent display he still has the chops, but fewer opportunities episode-to-episode to do so.
