What is the last score you listened to?

Independence Day - David Arnold: This is the kind of music that makes me glad to be a film score fan! :music:

:) A score that deserves the same treatment that Godzilla received - even the supposedly complete boot is missing loads of music and alternates etc.

Also some of the best French horn writing and playing i've ever heard.

Agreed. :)

Speaking of Godzilla, after listening to Independence Day, I must say I'm very interested in getting it.

Just completing a run through the Back to the Future trilogy. The whole things holds up well, though there's a definate drop in quality from score to score.

The first is a true classic, I know in the past I've called it a bit overrated but now I'm not so sure. I love the little "twinkling" motif, it's great at creating a slightly freaky and surreal atmosphere. II is a fine actionish score with a couple of the best cues in the whole series (mainly I'm Back). It's amazing how...sappy the thrid score is. And the great western theme isn't used enough.

It seems like this is a problem with the third film of nearly every trilogy, doesn't it? Hell, that's one of the few good things about At World's End; it darkens and complexifies the series rather than lightening it up.

I wouldn't say it's bad, just the least of the three. II does have a decent amount of rehash, but there's enough of a new spin put on it that it still feels fresh (the new interlude section in the main theme, for example).

Listening to M:I:III and I have to say that the whole Vatican sequence is probably the best scored part of the movie, with the bridge battle coming up at a very close second.

Hunchback of Notre Dame: Excellent, I think the only Menken score I own which I like more is Pocahontas. Hunchback is probably the most epic, the opening track is simply wonderful! And there's great songs and underscore throughout the entire soundtrack.

Beauty and the Beast: Great again! I love this, especially "Transformation" and "Be Our Guest."

Field of Dreams: I kinda spaced out while I was listening to this. I should probably hear it agin.

Listened to the complete score of Revenge of the Sith, then Munich, and now I am onto Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I figure I should see if POA actually does hold up in my mind, or maybe I should change my opinion about the first score.

Complete score for Godzilla and Casino Royale.

Strangely enough when hearing Godzilla I heard some of the statements from the cue The First Lady Dies from the score Independence Day. Kind of weird that Arnold would reuse statements from that cue into Godzilla.

Anyways, both scores are awesome as usual.

It goes the other way too, there's a cue or two in Stargate that were basically retooled just a little for action cues for Will Smith's character in ID4.

I like it a lot too. Like almost everything he does, it has that clear Elfman sound, but with a stately, quasi-classical atmosphere at times that really makes it a rich listen. The main theme is particularly good (and was sort of stolen the next year for Charlotte's Web), and the songs, while probably not as memorable as The Nightmare Before Christmas, are pretty fun.

I agree. There's a ton of highlights in that score. My favorite tracks are "Remain of the Day" and "Moon Dance," but there's plenty other great ones.

The Piano theme is lovely, but I found the score to be a huge dissapointment, pretty much like all of Elfman's outuput since 1999's Sleepy Hollow.

;) You don't like Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Serenada Schizophrana?

The Serenade is alright, but the other two are pretty pedestrian. His best score in the 2000's was still the Hulk, I find, but still a far cry from his 90's output.

I think Big Fish and Corpse Bride is almost as good as Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas, and better than Sleepy Hollow.

Angela's Ashes. Staggeringly beautiful and heartfelt, lyrical and emotional. Williams at his best.

Philip Glass & Geoff Zanelli's Secret Window. Some really nice moments in here like the slowly built theme for the degradation of Mort's psyche.

Star Trek III. I consider this more of a companion piece to Star Trek II than a sequel. It still has some great cues though, the "friendship theme" from II is used effectively throughout.

Been listening to Beauty and the Beast a lot, and I still love it. My favorite parts of the score are probably the ones with the theme that first appears in 0:09 of "Prolouge."

Ah, the Prologue theme. You'd like the stage version of Beauty and the Beast; the theme is used everywhere! Some of its coolest permutations are not included on CD releases of the score, though.

Accidental Tourist. Another smaller gem from John Williams' discography.

It's a nice score, but it's too repetitive to listen in full, in my opinion. The theme itself and a few other tracks may hit the spot every now and then, but the score as a whole is not something I would listen to from beginning to end.

I agree. But the Main Titles alone work wonders on me.

Last score I listened to was Horner's A Perfect Storm. Not at all a Horner classic..but I think it's a damn fine album. I'm quite fond of the main theme, and the structure of the score makes for a good consistant listen.

It's a terrific showcase of Goldenthal's abilty with the orchestra. It's like they gave him the LSO and said "go and play". I love it

The complete score to Temple of Doom. I'm liking "Pankot Palace" and the alternative "Main Title" ("Anything Goes" with strains of Willy's theme and the Raiders March added!).

Keep this on the lowdown, by the way. My contact doesn't want the boot spreading too quickly.

I listened to quite a few scores over the last few days. My complete re-edit for The Empire Strikes Back, the complete score for Starship Troopers and my complete edit for The Phantom Menace. and a couple of other scores too...
