Ollie 1,291 Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 I never even considered him. Hopefully he'll shy away from the modern sound he used for Harry Potter and go a bit more traditional.
BloodBoal 7,544 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Well, it'll depend on what the producers ask of him...
Jilal 628 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 "Well, Alexandre, the latest trend in film scoring appears to be silence, so perhaps you should consider that while writing the score."
Matt C 541 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Great choice!I wonder if he'll pay homage to Akira Ikufube's work...
Ollie 1,291 Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 Given the attitude of this production so far, I'm thinking that's a possibility.
crocodile 9,211 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Desplat is one of the best composers working right now, and a very diverse as well. I can't wait for some monster music from him.Given that they allow him to go all out.Karol
Koray Savas 2,256 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Definitely not the worst choice of composer, but I'll reserve judgement as I'm not a fan of Desplat's action music.
crocodile 9,211 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 What's wrong with it? I think his action music is very well structured. Precise, exciting and to the point.Karol
BloodBoal 7,544 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Definitely not the worst choice of composer, but I'll reserve judgement as I'm not a fan of Desplat's action music. From 6'19 onwards:
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 KarolSounds like a demo for a sample library.
crocodile 9,211 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 You mean the recording or composition?Karol
BloodBoal 7,544 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Sounds like a demo for a sample library.And Man Of Steel doesn't?
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 You mean the recording or composition?KarolThe recording. Sounds incredibly thin.
BLUMENKOHL 1,087 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'd love to hear Desplat work with the Ifukube theme. I actually think that's why Desplat will work so well for this: his music tends to be more on the darker end of the spectrum like Ifukube.Granted it's a pipe dream.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'd love to hear Desplat work with the Ifukube theme. I actually think that's why Desplat will work so well for this: his music tends to be more on the darker end of the spectrum like Ifukube.Granted it's a pipe dream. No Ifukube theme = fail
gkgyver 1,647 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Also, monster music a la Godzilla has not much to do with so-called "action music" in my eyes, so pointing to tracks like DH's Sky Battle does not say much.
crocodile 9,211 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 We weren't discussing that in the context of monster music.Karol
chuck 155 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I really need to listen to Desplat one of these days.
Brónach 1,318 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I'm not feeling this movie.Wait, is Brian Cranston playing the Takashi Shimura role?
ManofDestiny 96 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 At least better than Pacific Rim's score. Hope they will release a complete score, so that I can have EVERY Godzilla score in complete.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 We weren't discussing that in the context of monster music. KarolKoray said that he reserves judgment because he is no fan of Desplat's action music, which of course implies that connection. BB posted samples that have little to do with Godzilla monster music.I think discussing action music here of course automatically assumes a connection to the film.
Muad'Dib 1,946 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Now that's creative composer choosing. Very excited to hear what Desplat will deliver on this one. Some of his stuff on Rise of the Guardians sounded very Stravinsky-like, and something like that for Godzilla wouldn't be bad at all.
Jay 42,494 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 What's wrong with Pacific Rim's score?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0iTkLg3-sg
KK 3,310 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Nothing. A good guilty-pleasure score that's well-attuned to the spirit of the film.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,949 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I really need to listen to Desplat one of these days.Me too. Feel like I am missing something others seem to be getting.
Jay 42,494 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I only really like Rise of the Guardians, Ghost Writer, and Benjamin Button. His Harry Potter scores were dreadfully boring
publicist 4,648 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Desplat has about 80 other scores to his name, a lot of them for european productions . Sometimes it pays off to explore an artist beyond a handful of heavily advertised Hollywood movies.Notable scores include:Nid de guêpesGirl with a Pearl EarringThe Luzhin DefenceBirthL’Ennemi intime
Ollie 1,291 Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 Don't encourage them.I'm just thankful it wasn't the usual composers Legendary has used for their big films.
A24 4,814 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I like Desplat but he's doing too many movies. He should've said no to Godzilla. Knowing one has to compete with super loud sound effects for two hours, it's completely uninteresting for a composer.

I think he's slowing down now, at least for the moment. And if he really enjoys his work, why shouldn't he do as many as he like?

Knowing one has to compete with super loud sound effects for two hours, it's completely uninteresting for a composer.Competition is what drives society forward, what makes us better. We should be lauding aural competition in cinema, not denigrating it. Sonic space should be something the composer carves out himself through blood, sweat, and sheer ingenuity; effects-sparse films serve only to create a culture of artistic dependency.
chuck 155 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Sonic space should be something the composer carves out himself through blood, sweat, and sheer ingenuity; You forgot snot, phlegm and drool. And if it's aural competence, the composer should carve out his earwax thoroughly with surgical precision.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,949 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I like Desplat but he's doing too many movies. Is Desplat the new Ennio Morricone?

Ollie 1,291 Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 Godzilla is beneath Alex. He wouldn't dare bring himself to like something like that.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,949 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Beneath Alex or Alexandre?
