Michael Giacchino's War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

The third movie (which Reeves is directing and Giacchino is scoring) will be called War of the Planet of the Apes.

I'm can't wait to hear Giacchino's score for this one (and for any film, really)! I just hate that it got pushed back from 2016 to 2017.

Oh shit. Was hoping for someone interesting.

Here's to another 80 minutes of cringe-inducing puns, Disney-ish action music, 'Big Ass Marcato' bass ostinati and sentimental one finger piano themes.

Incanus, Not Mr. Big and KK like this

I liked the first two but don't remember any of the music. Gia is capable of making a great score every so often. He's also capable of making mediocre noise more often than not.

That does sound like Giacchino! Still, it's bloody fantastic.

Very much so

No less though then the "Gia is the new John Williams" line of old.

I like Gia, but he's yet to have a year as good as Broughton's 1993: Homeward Bound and Tombstone?!

Why would you hate that? It's only really bad when a film gets pushed back late in the process like Jupiter Ascending or GI Joe 2, since that could mean the studio has no faith in it and is recutting it or reshooting it or whatever. Getting a new date now during pre-production just gives everyone more time to develop a better movie.

Also: Is Giacchino confirmed for this?

I hated that it got pushed back because the sooner the movie comes out, the sooner we get another Giacchino score--that's all! I did think that a 2016 release was an awfully quick turnaround for a film with so many special effects. I do agree--the later release will help them make a better film. I'm just impatient. :)

Giacchino and Reeves confirmed that Giacchino would return in their reddit AMA they had last year.

Well, there's still plenty of time for Giacchino's 2016 schedule to fill up with assignments!

Meanwhile, I am looking forward to his next three 2015 scores!

These titles are getting more and more stupidly awkward. Bin the 'Planet of the' part, it isn't needed.

Dawn/Rise/War are all equally awkward, they aren't progressing in anyway.

APE WAR could have worked.

I was thinking more of this.

Great cue, BTW.

Too bad Broughton doesn't have dramatic sensibilities. Nice music. Worthless movie music. Which is why Giacchino makes money and Broughton writes nice music 4 maybe 5 people listen to.

His Westerns are a step above the rest though!

I would love him to do an Apes film (this and some bits of Silverado prove how awesome would that be). But then. I would love him to do anything. :)

Having said that, Giacchino did a good job on the last one. For once, I think the usual "deficiencies in his style" (if there is such a thing) serve the film very well.

Maybe, but people do love the Homeward Bound ending cue.

"No dramatic sensibilities"? "Worthless movie music"? Wow! First news in the 35 years I've been listening to Broughton and watching films scored by him. Care to elaborate on that?

To my ear, Broughton has similar musical capabilities as Williams, but didn't get anywhere near as far as Johnny career-wise.

They're still giving Giacchino major iconic franchises?

I wasn't sure after John Carter, Super8 and Jupiter Ascending (all flops) , but after the amount of money JP4 made, I'm sure he'll get to score more major franchises

How was Super 8 a flop on the same level as John Carter and Jupiter Ascending? It made $260 million on a $50 million budget and scored an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. I would call that decently successful.

Worthless movie music? It's a film with talking dogs, FFS.

$260 millions is no big hit in today's world, where most movies get to a billion! It's peanuts!
