Mostly eight-stave in the past, in fact, and mostly sixteen-stave as of late (TFA, for instance).

Extrapolating this trend, I'd wager the DOD cues written by Williams himself also began their lives as sixteen-stave sketches.

BE AWARE LINKED VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FILM!!!

From 27:53, they briefly discuss JW and the music. They mention one or two scenes and the associated score.

I honestly don't have a problem with people saying that the Dial score is less memorable than previous Indy film scores, BUT I DO have a problem with commenters spreading false information concerning JW's writing methods and making it appear that he no longer is in full control of the music being written.

Absolutely incredible interview! Mangold not just geeking out about working with Williams but providing genuine insight into their process and how involved Williams was. First time I've heard about him watching dailies while production was ongoing and formulating the score during production.

Also fascinating is Mangold voicing his frustration at JW's initial soundtracks being so incomplete (and often filled with non-film cue suites), name-dropping LLL for coming to the rescue, while lamenting it takes 20+ years for JW scores to receive expansions. Mangold's one of us!

He has enough clout to speak to LFL/WDR/JW about changing this situation (at least for the Indy scores) so let's hope conversations are happening in the background. But it might be a good time for everyone to dust off their Twitter accounts and tell him how badly we want these expanded...

Mangold's exact comments for anyone who can't listen:
"It's forever to my chagrin that they release these albums, you know the initial release, that are like 10 or 11 tracks of John's music... but there's always these suite versions of the music. And then later, 20 years later, they'll release the full La La Land Records 96 cue versions... you know, those are the things you gotta have because they have all this incidental stuff he does that's just... brilliant."

Well then yes, that theme to me had a strong and clear presence in the film. It's a big melodic catchy theme, played boldly with relatively few other sounds over it, and it's very clear exactly what it represents.

To me it made itself known way more than themes that appear more often, like Helena's or Voller's. Those characters to me didn't get clearly scored with big versions of their themes like say, Indy does in each movie, or the way Marion or Short Round do, etc. For me anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the brass stuff in 'The Miami Convention' (from the beginning up until around 2:00) from Nixon, feels equal parts inspiring and foreboding, and I think it works really well with the film.

Voller theme might be lost on a first watch - it is subtle.

i said the same thing about Helena. williams goes through sooooooo many different guises and versions and manipulations that often it is hard to even identify that it is her theme.

also - dunno if you also got that - but in some versions of the theme - it sounds like a bad guy theme.

it's interesting Nazi Might theme stood out because per my estimation it appears just 3 times - once over the title card, once when the Nazi plane is revealed during 3rd act (the plane they use to travel back in time), and then during end credits.

No disagreement from me. JW at his worst is 95% better than most scores/composers at their best. Especially in the current day and age. I miss the 80s/90s and the pillars of that era, including Williams, Goldsmith, Horner, Poledouris... and the list goes on. I sometimes like to think they kept each other on their toes -- not necessarily "competing," -- but bringing out the absolute best in each other.

Jilal reacted to Falstaft in Dial of Destiny: Theme Transcriptions (Updated)
Not sure if this warrants its own thread or not, but I've done a first pass at transcriptions of the new themes from DoD. I don't know if we've come up with consensus labels for all of these, besides the obvious for Helena and Voller. Also have little confidence that the Archimedes theme is transcribed rhythmically 100% accurately, or the tertiary Nazi theme harmonically.

Helena (transcribed from arrangement that premiered last year):

    Antiquity/Antithykera Mechanism (transcribed from "Prologue")

Nazis 1 "Spirit" (transcribed from "Prologue")

Nazis 2 "Supremacy" - exotic and furtive (transcribed from "Prologue")

Temp-tracking certainly explains some passages, though I feel pretty comfortable that most everything has been newly recorded. Where there are longer spans of music built from successions of little bits and pieces of previous cues (notably most of the opening act), it's William Ross, tasked with cobbling together an "Indiana Jones action set-piece" that all was technically JW music, but in which JW never really had to be involved. Williams wasn't flipping through the pages of his old Indy scores (or TinTin, MR ,or WOTW for that matter) carefully considering "oh, I'd like to revisit that 10 measure fragment from The Boat Scene"...

My experience was completely ruined by a bunch of arrogant little brats right next to me who couldn't shut their mouths for one damn second and were so damn caught up scrolling through their friggin' Instagram feed they probably saw diddly-squat of the actual movie ...
