Don't need Dracula. Basically one theme, and not very good by Williams' stardards...

ALL of JW's arrangements are over the top. Where a normal arranger would use one woodwind run JW uses about 62. Where a normal arranger would stop at flutes and plucked violins, JW adds in a harp, a celeste, a piano, a glockenspiel, a "jeu de timbres" (whatever the hell that is), two electric pianos, and God only knows what else...

It all pays off in the end, though. To Life, Miracle of Miracles, The Bottle Dance etc...all JW at his best.

But my favourite bit is when Johnny goes absolutely bat**** insane towards the end of Tevye's Dream.

I listen to it at least once a month it's just so good!

It was absolutely fantastic. What surprised me the most were some small additions here and there (flight control scene, for example) as well as the conversation sequence being performed by the orchestra. It was bit different due to some synth parts being performed by string section (for example)... but it also made complete sense in a concert setting. Especially the part where the tuba response (here "amplified" by the orchestra) shatters the glass.

Also had a nice catch up with fellow JWFans Christian, Marian and Jim.

And yes, "orgasmic" is the only suitable word to describe the entire final act.

No audition, they know me (and my passion for JW) I'm not living in Helsinki any more and they have their usual substitutes but I still hope they will hire the drunken hornist!!!

It's Finland, all he has to do is challenge them to a drinking contest. We could help him  remain conscious between shots by posting here that The Book Thief sucks and is Williams' worst score since John Goldfarb!

They are performing the original Star Wars (A New Hope) in Concert here in Helsinki on the 8th of September 2018. Naturally I'll be there.

There also seem to be plenty of tickets left.

Not that I think many would make the trip outside of Finland. But hopefully other Finnish JWFans have their tickets already.

My meeting with him, if it even could be called as such, was very brief, practically no interaction whatsoever.

About five years ago, John Williams conducted the San Francisco Symphony, and I bought tickets ASAP. The day of, I dragged my friend around town as I looked to find a gift for the man who was such a profound influence on my life. Eventually I found what I was looking for: a beautiful book of tree photography.

Later that night, after the concert, I dashed to the dressing room area, but was stopped by an usher. She refused to let me through, and so I asked if she'd promise that she would deliver my gift to John Williams. She said yes, and took the book. Out of my hands both literally and figuratively, my friend and I went outside, where some fans were gathered outside to possibly meet him.

Eventually, a car drove out, with our beloved Maestro inside. He waved to us all, then his car drove on into the quiet, empty streets of late-night San Francisco.

Did he get the book? I don't know. Maybe the usher just told me that to shut me up. But five years, all I can hope was that she kept her word.

Beyond the book itself, I really hope he was able to read this message I wrote for him inside the front cover of the book:

Got to hang out with him for a few days when he was rehearsing my orchestra.  Since I was in the composition program, I skipped class and attended all the rehearsals where there were plenty of opportunities to meet, shake his hand, babble some incoherent words of worship, get some advice, take pictures, watch him work, etc.  That week was one of the highlights of my life and it culminated with the concert performance which was a tremendous success with a very long, enthusiastic, and appreciative standing ovation.

By the way, a least one person involved in the organisation of these concerts must be a fan: All tickets for the Saturday concert carry the number "1138", and all tickets for Sunday "1977".

The Lost World is among the tree worst scores by Johnny. The others are Indy4 and Dracula. Terrible jungle noise.
I cant believe I spent my money again for this. JP is still among the top 100.

I'd just started working in a small classical CD boutique in Toronto in summer 1993, when Williams walked in alone. He asked for the Vaughan Williams section (lol), specifically wanting a good version of The Lark Ascending. I'm not sure what he wanted to do with it, review some of the elder's composing technique or demonstrate some idea to someone on his team. He said he was in town scoping out the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir for possible work on a score he was doing with Spielberg. Someone out there might be able to confirm some of the chronology concerning the score work for Schindler's. It seems late for him to still be considering who would record the choral segments, but there you go. Obviously with the VW CD he had writing for solo violin and orchestra top of mind.

My encounter with Williams wasn't at a concert but during the day, just the two of us in the store, him dressed *almost* casually, chatting while he wasn't in a rush. Getting to let him know how much I'd paid attention to his work and how CE3K was my all time fav was of course rewarding, memorable, etc. Little did I know this was the big year it would be for him. We had a small number of JW titles on hand including JP, but I chose something from the delete rack for him to sign - cheeky of me. I explained how my dad and I had shared listening to Pops on the March and watched many of the concert broadcasts, so it seemed appropriate. It also saved another piece of cutout stock, and how.
