A thing to consider: the film is Spielberg's love letter to his parents, whom he loved immensely and who both passed away not too long ago. Steven often brought both of them to attend John's scoring sessions over the years and JW himself came to know both quite well, so it's fair to assume that this was personal and intimate for him too. From all I saw so far, it feels just right to score such a personal story with an intimate chamber-like approach instead of going bombastic. This probably will disappoint people who were expecting Adventures on Earth Part 2, but what we'll end up getting is for sure something that both director and composer felt was right for this film.

Too many of you are already passing assumptions based on reviews and impressions stated by other people as facts. Just wait until you’ve at least listened to the album.

Piano and keyboard solos on the score are performed by Robert Thies and Joanne Pearce Martin.

Might as well point it out before people assume I was trying to only fuel unnecessary speculation

I think a few trying to want The Fabelmans as this sort of "grand finale" for the long history of SS/JW collabs is really setting themselves up for disappointment, since there's quite no way of knowing yet what they're trying to achieve here. It's a world of difference seeing the product for yourself instead of simply going off the descriptions of others.

What is happening? How about actually seeing the film when it comes out and listening to the actual score when it comes out? If people who actually saw the film said it was a masterpiece and described the Maestro's score as "masterful," "amazing," and "emotional," then I look forward to seeing the film and getting the soundtrack more than I already was.

    What on Earth, lol.

Look, Williams gives gorgeous smaller scores. Angela's Ashes, Schindler's List, Sabrina, etc etc etc. Considering the last two scores coming out are so different, I can't wait to have a smaller more intimate score and a big adventure one. Seems fitting to end with his two beautiful styles.

As for light piano pieces. Many people watching it might be confusing the "pop" of era with that, plus it is up to Spielberg, who knows and loves music so much, that he will serve his film with what is best. And he adores Williams so they would have come up with the best for the movie.

Personally I am looking forward to it.

John’s schedule is carefully planned. He wrote all of The Fabelmans before tackling Indy 5.

People here should really stop making inconsequential claims about things they clearly have no idea about.

I'll never forgive Spielberg for, in their final collaboration, he plasters the movie with whatever the fuck classical music he enjoys, while JW takes the back seat.

I don't care if "iT hElPs tHe MoViE". This should've been special, and it won't, thanks to his fucking nostalgia for his mom playing the piano.

Erskine's company (Cavalry Music) has done music for some of the biggest studio trailers of the last few years, incl. Star Wars, lots of Marvel stuff and recently the LOTR Amazon series.

It's still too early to make any substantial predictions, so anything can happen atm. Spielberg's film got a warm welcome in Toronto and is generating positive reactions by the usual Oscar pundits, but it's still September and too many potential contenders have to show up yet. Usually films that get a strong Oscar buzz this early end up not winning that much, as they tend to be overshadowed by films that are released later and the initial enthusiasm gets colder. We'll see.

Score-wise, imho there isn't much hope in seeing JW getting a 6th statuette. He's loved and respected by the community (especially his music peers), but he's seen more as Hollywood royalty nowadays than an actual contender for awards. The token nomination will be seen as a sign of respect and homage enough to generate media buzz (the usual "most nominated living person" titles), but that will be it.

    Hello,

Some of you are already aware of this, but I want to spread the news to every JWFan here:

After a few months working on it on and off, I'm now ready to launch this side project of mine which I hope will encounter interest among fellow John Williams admirers. It's time for me to give back the immense amount of gratitude I have toward this great composer. It's a blog called "The Legacy of John Williams":

    https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/

The purpose is to build a platform to collect and gather material from people around the world who were inspired by the music of John Williams--mostly musicians, composers, conductors, but also filmmakers, film professionals, historians, music critics and scholars. I want to give space also to admirers who have interesting stories and perspectives to tell and share. The goal is to celebrate the rich musical legacy John Williams is giving and leaving to our lives, for centuries to come.

There is a larger and much more ambitious goal at the core of this project, but it’s too soon to speak about it. If this blog will get momentum and will become the platform I hope will be in the foreseeable future, everything will be addressed. As you can see, it's still work-in-progress, but from now on I plan to build and update it regularly, so be patient, I promise it will be worth your time. Taking a cue from the Maestro's writing process, I see this project as a living thing that can be improved and changed over the course of time.

Today I published the first piece of content, an exclusive interview with pianist Gloria Cheng about the Montage recording/documentary:

I've also set up Facebook and Twitter pages, so I hope you will like/follow:

Of course feedback from anyone is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for listening!
