Best label name ever.

OK, looking on this page http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/10766/Becket it seems the CD fits the description posted on the Amazon page you linked to (10 tracks and a running time of 40 minutes). Plus the product is sold by Amazon itself, so I think you can buy it safely, without fearing that it'll be a bootleg version or some shit like that.

I'm gonna buy it since the price is very reasonable, but this doesn't inspire confidence:

Quote

When sold by Amazon.com, this product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

But at least I can return it, if it's awful.

I'm currently listening to the Prequel scores in chronological order for the first time.

Definitely more pleasant!

The OST albums can't be listened to in chronological order without editing, because many tracks contain music from 2 different parts of their film

I know, but it can't be worse than the original track lists!!!

Regarding OST sequencing, I now realize that JW lost the "magic touch" many years ago... Definitely since "The Lost World", and even maybe a little time before...

From this moment on, I want an Expanded reissues for everything that was released since 1997. :pfft:

I read again my previous post... and It really looks like I finally have this disease.... this C&C disease.

I'm doomed!

I will think of that the feet in the sand. :D

Amerika - Basil Poledouris

Picked this up on a whim. Doesn't disappoint. Only really know Basil from his bigger film scores (Conan, Robocop, Starship Troopers) but this is a fantastic surprise. Plenty more exploring to do through his discography.

Well that is the biggest problem with Thor's arguments - he basically says that every single time, the original album that came out around the time is preffered, and the later C&C expansion is never welcome (yes, I know he's made a very small amount of exceptions).  But it's just illogical because guess what?  Not every abridged and arranged album is going to be perfect.  Sometimes there is a crazy time crunch and they just don't have time to think about proper album arranging.  Sometimes the album must be finalized before they've even finished recording the score.  Sometimes the composer has some wacky idea about what to include and it ends up being a bad idea.  In brief, sometimes the album just doesn't have the right highlights or rearranges things into too weird of an order.  The fact is there are great abridged and arranged albums and bad ones, just like their are great C&C releases and bad ones.  No single composer has knocked it out of the park every time with every album.  That would be one amazing streak!

I remember Mike Matessino says in a recent interview that John Williams still makes LP programs in his head... Yes, sometimes it shows!

I'm not afraid to say it, I never liked The Lost world OST CD... and now, I love the Expanded Release.  This must means something. And I think it's the same with the Prequels.

I mean, John Williams is so meticulous about his themes and their development in a score... why neutralize that with a shambolic track list order?

Of course it is. Of the three prequel albums only AOTC was a halfway acceptable representation and even that had good stuff missing.

Hmmm, there also appears to be this:

What the heck is "Red Bitch Music"?  Never heard of that label.....

All I found in my research before was a release that focused on dialogue excerpts from the film.

Best I can tell they're a company that rips music stems from DVDs that are public domain in the EU and then sells them on Amazon-manufactured CD-Rs.

Oh, it's definitely a bootleg version.  The "sold by Amazon itself" thing is because it's often cheaper for a label (particularly the more unscrupulous ones, but it happens with some major soundtracks as well, like Elfman's Girl on the Train) to use Amazon's CreateSpace CD-R service instead of actually pressing albums when it comes to low-volume releases.

That for me is the weirdest part of some of Williams' OST album choices.  He often very carefully has his themes "start small and end big" through out the course of a film score, but then goes ahead and undoes that development in an OST album by putting a huge sweeping theme as track 2 or 3, etc.  It's not necessary bad if he has an end credits track open things (like Minority Report or Raiders of the Lost Ark) because it acts as a kind of "overture", but undoing the development within the score cues never really works out well IMO.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Sweet Jesus, this is good. Crank it up!

Just listened to it last night too. It is just awesome and the unreleased music kicks ass!

I really dig how uncommonly harsh (by John Williams' standards) some of the writing is, all the violent avant garde techniques used and the very rhythmic orchestral suspense and horror territory JW explores with this music.

I'm not sure whether it's that good. Williams has such a big repertoire of big works. But it is indeed quite unique and a lot of fun. Not a single weak cue in that one (unless you count the end credits suite). It was my first full JW score soundtrack ever and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

The Eiger Sanction by John Williams: While this undoubtedly shows its age with its 1970's pop and jazz influences it is still a heck of an entertaining album with its various eclectic stylistic choices as Williams in a bit The Long Goodbye spirit provides numerous versions of the main theme in variety of styles from Bossa Nova to light jazz and composes Baroque influenced training montage guitar theme for Training with George and George Sets the Pace.

As this is a 1970's thriller there is also some sparse and often harsh suspense writing (Up the Drainpipe and The Microfilm Killing) with similar stylings as the concurrent Jaws and the later Family Plot and even Black Sunday but the composer also finds a few moments to unleash some orchestral grandeur like the classically tinged adagio in The Icy Ascent or the noble horn led The Eiger and The Top of the World. At 35 minutes this is a breezy listen and nicely showcases Williams' versatile skill in navigating a highly eclectic scoring assignment.

KING KONG.

Hot damn, but this is a good score! I don't own the complete score, so I had to slum it, with the FSM (oh, the humanity! ). No matter.

If TLD is my fave JB score, and OHMSS, and TLIW are 2, and 3, then KING KONG is definitely 4th.

From the foreboding opening, with its almost ecclesiastical organ, via a lovely, but not sugary, love theme ( I can't even imagine what Andy Williams would later do to it), to the tragic THE END, this is grade-A Barry!

It was so good, in fact, that after it had finished, I put it on again, and I played it a second time. It really is that damn good!

Lincoln by John Williams.

After watching the movie for, I think, the 10th time last night, I had to listen to the OST before bed.  It's wonderful, certainly his finest "Americana" score IMO.  The sound of the CSO in the concert hall is amazing, it's one of his best sounding recordings ever I think.

When I lived on the east coast, I used to drive around parking lots at shopping centers where they pile up big mountains of snow in the winter listening to "Hard To Starboard" and pretending the snow was the iceberg.

We've had this conversation before. All I'm saying is that I prefer not to partake.

I think that positing the merits of one over the other, may be counterproductive, as people will never agree. I enjoy alcohol (I'm settling down to watch a DVD, with a - large - glass of Calvados - yum!!!) but when it comes to the weed, I just say "no".
