Andy reacted to Tallguy in The Star Trek Disenchantment Thread
He's so problematic that they have re-cast the character twice and are making new episodes with the character to this day. (And they have not gender or race swapped the character.)

The reason he wasn't in the latest marketing go round is that it becomes a very crowded roster and they're concentrating on the current shows (which includes Picard) rather than TOS. I still disagree, but I see why they would promote Anson Mount and Patrick Stewart over Shatner. Plus I'm sure there is a degree of box-ticking taking place and "white guy in a yellow shirt" had been taken by a current production.

I love DS9. But I was no where near as "enchanted" with Star Trek as when TOS was on TV every day and there was a new Kirk movie coming out every few years.

I loved this part. John Williams never ceases to amaze me:

    And this too:
And I love the fact that JW helps raising money for orchestras because he feels indebted to them, that without the musicians that perform his music it would just be, as he puts it, "dots on a paper".

    Truly a marvelous human being.

It's really great, isn't it? I know enough about Williams's style of interviewing that a) his responses are often a little rehearsed and massaged and b) this one really does capture his incredible autobiographical memory and poetic sensibility towards his life and art.

Also, I didn't know he remembered that the SW opening title initially began with that tiny run up! Who else remembers first listening to the "secret" track on the ANH Special Edition in 97 and just being blown away?!

Jaws 2 - undoubtedly the best of the 3 sequels, albeit with shark attacks that just aren't the match of those in the classic original. The reappearances of Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary and Murray Hamilton (and Mr Williams) do help quite a bit.

Just watched this from my newly purchased magnificent 4k steelbook!
Quite enjoyable and I cannot believe how Renny Harlin was nominated for a Razzie award for worst director!

Watched Waterworld, the Ulysses Cut. Movie's still damn fun, maybe not the most engaging characterwise, and even though he's great at chewing the scenery something just doesn't click for me about Dennis Hopper here, but the production design, worldbuilding, setpieces and practical effects are phenomenal, every penny of the out of control budget is up on the screen. I've not properly watched the theatrical many times, and not in a while, so apart from a few standout scenes I didn't really notice much different, it's just generally richer in worldbuilding and character moments all over. I watched it over 2 nights splitting at the "intermission" fade to black in the middle so I'm not sure exactly how it impacts the pacing overall. The footage is integrated impeccably, apart from a few faded SD upscale composite shots near the end you absolutely cannot tell any difference visually, maybe sometimes in audio where they had to use the on-set recording and there was no ADR to clean it up, but it's not bad. I loved that they owned up to it and satisifed the maybe limited but definitely existing demand.

    However.

Having just done the iso score, what I did notice was, well, the score. Of course it was expected that cues would be copypasted for new establishing shots or looped for extended scenes, but holy fuck the music for the atoll battle is completely utterly mangled. A lot of little shots are put in and some are reordered, but instead of looping or slightly recutting the music, they tore it all down and rebuilt it butchered from scratch, in Recycled / Smokers Sighted / Battle / The Balloon, even the parts that are the same as the theatrical for a longer time have all their lovely sync points and structure all fucked up. After seeing how well the music syncs up to and supports the theatrical, this shit was almost physically uncomfortable, why the hell would you do that???

Andy reacted to Thor in Ridley Scott makes wonderful movies, don’t you think?
Yeah, that's my main attraction to Scott. Even when the script or storytelling is weak, he always manages to communicate interesting ideas through his use of sound and visuals alone. That's equally important (for me, MORE important). I'm attracted to film as a medium because of its ability to absorb me in a universe, or to say things in non-literary ways. That's not to say Scott hasn't had great stories or scripts -- he has! -- but it's not my main attraction to him as a filmmaker.

Great to have two more Goldsmith on the way. Another premiere would be nice although I wouldn't mind a reissue of Explorers and Deep Rising

Andy got a reaction from JTN in Composers you used to like, but now dislike?
Waaaay harder than the other thread for me.  I grew up in Williams’ most popular era. Having developed my taste for film music that way meant any other composer had a high bar and had to really earn my liking.  Nostalgia also is hard to be objective about.   For example, I’ll probably never say I don’t like Leonard Rosenman anymore, because he has a sound that i just sort of associate with my childhood.

I guess I could go so far as to say I prefer early works of many composers like Alan Silvestri and Danny Elfman to what they do now. But that doesn’t mean I like their early works less.

Show a little love, because for those who may not know, I've been contributing to Charles Aznavour's discography projects with Universal France for 10 years now. My friends Ayk, Ben, and I have been working on this historic 100-CD box set as consultants since last year. It's our greatest work, and I'm really proud of it!
