...it's brilliant!

If this is brilliant, what does that makes Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

Neil

I think it is more efficient to watch Indy 4.. because in that movie I have Raiders and Close Encounters... with a better score.. and a more senful storyline... I think Indy 4 is spielbergs special edition of these two movies, which were the biggest boredfest of all time!

Well next week will be the true telling sign. How much of a drop off will the film have.

I'd look for it to drop about 55% -- steep, but not calamitous. There's just not much competition next weekend; Sex and the City is an entirely different audience. I won't be surprised if that movie ends up at number one for the weekend, but either way, it won't have an impact on Indy.

I don't see a movie that appeals only women and a narrow group of gays knocking Indy off at the boxoffice. Especially since its never been a huge tv hit, yes it was critically acclaimed on HBO with a very small veiwership, and its never taken off in syndication the way it was expected too. Course the BO is a fixle creature we'll see, but I still expect Indy to stay # 1 at the boxoffice this week, and the step aside to Zohan the following week.

Hey, I'm neither a woman nor gay, and I'd like to see SatC sometime... the series was fun.

I'm talking America of course. I make no predictions about Europeans, there is no telling what kind of stuff you guys will like or not.

Most fans seem to think The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. Not adjusting for inflation, guess which one made the least at the box office?

And of course ticket prices have gone up just a little bit since the last Indy movie came out. When you adjust for inflation it'll be interesting to see how many tickets were actually sold versus the older films.

Well in that case, here's the domestic adjusted for inflation totals:

The Empire Strikes Back $675,482,800

Return of the Jedi Fox 647,128,700

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace $583,601,600

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith $408,153,100

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones $367,863,100

Raiders of the Lost Ark $606,416,000

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom $368,305,800

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade $339,985,500

$151 mil for 5 days mean it has a great shot at cracking $300 domestically.

At least!

Hey, I'm neither a woman nor gay

Are you sure?

Battlestar Galactica and Lost are two of the best shows to ever hit TV.

They have the most consistently declining ratings on TV.

Battlestar Galactica is on a tv network with traditionally low ratings to begin with, and both shows have a problem in that they are telling one huge story arc. Casual fan interest will wane because of this.

It doesn't help that either has had a consistent timeslot, only periodically showing up on tv for small periods of time.

also neither have been consistently good, both had a down season.

still this has nothing to do with a films boxoffice, or a films quality.

TV is too unpredictable, many a good show get cancelled or are hardly given a chance anymore.

All one has to do is look at the wealth of reality based TV shows to get an idea.

Normally, I wouldn't think Sex and the City would have a shot, either, but at my theatre, we've been getting tons -- tons -- of phone calls asking if we're having a midnight show on Thursday. (We are.) I think it's going to be a much bigger hit than people are expecting, and end up in a tight race for first with Indy.

Having never watched the series, I've got no interest in the movie, and yet will still probably see it, since I get to do so on the clock. If I'm bored, I'll just go to sleep.

Isn't Sex and the City largely a well-shot porno with occasional laughs?

My guess is that it will be a typical example for something that was once ahead of time, but didn't hear the bell, and is suddenly behind of its time.

Sex and the City is a cult hit. It has quite a large fan base (90% women, I'm sure), and therefore it's a guaranteed hit. Although considering its budget of 65 mill, I'm not sure whether it will make a lot of money.

(I'm surprised Sex and the City has a budget of 65 mill!!! I mean, what the hell. Jurassic Park had the same budget 15 years ago. They probably hired ILM to make the four ladies look ten years younger. )

By the way, if Indy 4 is this successful, they'll almost certainly wanna do another (at least Georgie will). Do we really want/need this?

the succesfulness can only help in us getting expanded scores (even if I think it still will never happen)

It sure can't hurt, but does it really HELP? I don't know.

A good deal of that $65 million would have been for shooting in New York City, which is very expensive. Also the actress' pay packet each, which would have been enormous.

Still, 65 mill. seems excessively high to me (unless marketing costs are included).

I think the movie doesn't differ much from the TV series, except of course that it lasts longer . . . maybe like 3 or 4 episodes.

Probably more "sweeping" cinematography too since they'd want to take advantage of the medium. Otherwise, they may as well have made it a TV movie.

And remember, $65 million in 2008 doesn't buy what the same amount could in 1993.

True . . .

BTW does anyone know whether Indy 4's budget was 125 mill. or 185 mill.??? I keep coming across both numbers. Is 185 mill. with marketing costs included, or is that the budget for the movie alone?

To offset the budget I think Ford, Spielberg and Lucas declined an upfront salary and will receive their payments based on the profits or something like that.

Yeah, I understand unless the movie makes in excess of 400 mill. Spielberg and co. don't get anything.

they will make plenty of money on this film

Watching these numbers is much more exiting than watching that(lousy) film itself.

Because many people watch "this lousy movie," you can watch "these exciting numbers."

Money does not equal quality, people in general want to see the film and are going to see it. Wanting to see it and liking it afterwards are too different things. Everyone I know who has seen it has had wildly different opinions about it, some like it and some don't. My brother asked me how it was, I told him to pass on it or at least save some money and wait for DVD. I know my mom wanted to see it too, I'll try and stop her.

$125 million so far, half of what I predicted. It's not looking good for me.

You're trying to stop your bro and mom from watching Indy 4? Dude, seriously, what's wrong with you? If they wanna see it, let them see it. And let them make up their own minds about it!

If it were just any other movie, I wouldn't say that, but this is Indiana Jones!

I've told plenty of people it's not worth seeing, in fact my sister and her husband aren't going to see it after I gave them my review. So are several people who trust my judgement on movies.

So what if they don't want to see it? It's not going to affect your life. If people want to waste their money and go see it so what? I'm not loosing any sleep over it.

I'm not talking about people who don't wanna see it anyway.

However, if people wanna see it, let them see it and decide for themselves whether they like it or not! After all, just because you hate it doesn't mean everybody else will.

I'd have seen it in the theater no matter what kind of reviews it was getting....with something iconic like this, I like to see for myself and make up my own mind. And since people have unique opinions, I wouldn't tell them to see it or not based on my own thoughts.

come on, is the movie that bad as to resort convincing people not to go watch it?

And what if when they see it on DVD, they like it and say damn, i should have seen this on the big screen. Too late now.

My mother liked the movie very much, i think she likes it more than me and my brother and sister.

And i'm sure my grandparents (age 80) will like it too.

I didn't convince anyone. I gave them an honest opinion and I have their respect when it comes to movies.

Still, I agree with Luke Skywalker when he says, "come on, is the movie that bad as to resort convincing people not to go watch it?"
