The Official La-La Land Records Thread

If/when the prequels are released, it won't be thru LaLaLand, FSM etc etc.

Sony will release it themselves, or whatever label holds the rights at the time, as a mainstream release.

I don't understand what the hold up is really. No reuse fees and nothing to restore from tapes. Just needs to be put on a CD.

I fail to see what anyone loses. Except maybe Williams and his sanity when he realises his precious listening experience has been shattered.

Well the "blame" can probably be placed with Lucas and Williams.

I'm sure Williams feels the current albums are good enough. After the fiasco with TPM:UE, well that was just a mess.

And I know people here do not want to hear this but the prequel scores aren't as popular with the public as the original trilogy was and still is.

I think there are several factors holding up the prequels scores:

1. CD sales as a whole are low, not to mention that the UE is rumored to have sold poorly. And even without re-issue fees it's still expensive to master, mix and produce an album, it really isn't as simple as some people make it sound.

2. The oldest prequel is just 10 years old, which is not that long time when it comes to re-issuing scores and it has already been given 2 different releases, ROTS is not even 5 years old (how much did we have to wait for expanded OT and Indy for example)

3. Lucasfilm right now is on kid mode with the huge success of the cartoon and the toys selling pretty well, I think they might consider scores after the success of the Clone Wars has gone and they have to rely on older SW fans to make money.

4. I doubt the average SW fan cares too much about complete prequel scores, it's not like with ROTJ that only had a 45 minute LP back in the day with some very notorious missing music ("Dark Side Beckons"). And yeah, I know some of you will say that the unreleased music from the prequels is as good and as important as stuff like "Dark Side Beckons" but really is not.

I still think they will happen one day, it's Lucasfilm and Star Wars afterall, if the Vader toaster or the R2 laundry basket are any indication it's that they like to milk SW as much as they can. As long as there's a profit to be made, they'll make the scores, the question is then, will complete prequel scores be profitable? I think so, although they wouldn't be mega-sellers at all.

As good? Well, "The Dark Side Beckons" is already on a ridiculous pedestal anyway, so it would be hard to top that. But as important? Sure. "I Am The Senate" immediately disproves that. The shortened "Lament". No "Padme's Visit". Half of the duel missing. And that's just ROTS.

As for the average SW fan, well I've heard and read a lot from them, and the general consensus seems to be that they all want complete prequel scores as much as we do. Just a five-minute read at the Jedi Council will tell you that.

The average SW fan doesn't even know much of "I Am the Senate" since it was pretty much cut into pieces in the film. The missing piece of Lament is not very long, so again most people won't notice (10 or so SW freaks on a SW forum don't count, the mayor part of the profit wouldn't come from them). Maybe I've just seen different forums but most "normal" SW fans seem pretty happy with their Imperial Marches, Battle of the Heroes, Duel of the Fate, etc.

Again, this is not like Jedi that was pretty much just unreleased music if you take into consideration that of the 45 minute LP, a big part were concert pieces. If the average fan cares so much, why did the UE sold poorly? And no, I don't think they mind the music is all screwed up, in fact, from what I've read, some SW fans prefer it that way, because, "it's just like the movie".

They will happen, I'm pretty sure, but come on, ROTS isn't even 5 years old, we just have to be patient.

I don't know why the UE sold so poorly. Word of mouth on forums like this certainly kept the soundtrack buffs away, but this wasn't released by an online label. It was a mass released product found in stores. Maybe only the die hard soundtrack collectors buy the expensive sets, but do all soundtrack buyers frequent sites like this? I don't think so. Did the average joe feel that his one disc TPM was enough, and an unattractive package with 30+ tracks per disc seem too intimidating?

It was released too soon after the release of the single disc OST, but I don't know if that had an effect. The Lord of the Rings Complete Recordings were more expensive and were also released soon after the single disc versions, but these were very hard to find and sold very well.

I think the prequel scores will be released in their entirety. Unfortunately I do not think it will be within Williams' lifetime.

Actually the LOTR complete scores began 2 years after ROTK. So it was 4 years after FOTR that the first one was released. TPM:UE came out 15 or so months after the original album did and there was some speculation among a few in the business that it was too soon.

I don't have the sales figures but it's obvious the LOTR original albums sold well and Howard Shore, as well as PJ, was a force behind getting the complete recordings out there.

Williams doesn't feel the same way.

But that's not possible. There's no way uploaded files to the internet could affect sales of an album.

People here don't subscribe to that theory, it's blaspemy I tell you. The utter notion is absurd.

;) Yes that was a heavy dose of sarcasm.

There are many companies who own the rights to soundtracks that have decent boots circulating, and we don't see these companies rushing to tap that market with proper release.

The TPM UE was a greedy venture at best. A half-assed rushed product from a company who thought that "every note from the movie" was what the fans wanted.

If the TPM DVD had had an isolated score track, the same musical product with no UE album release, I think the fans would have been happier.

I apologize if this was already answered or if we're not allowed to discuss this but does the 2CD have everything that was on the first release and the bootleg? I just want to make sure I can get rid of both now

And a cue richer, with the film version of "Augie's Great Municipal Band." Talk about insult to injury.

Ya it's funny how they made all the cues on the TPM U.E. their film version counter parts except "Augie's Great Municipal Band", I wonder what prompted them to make that one the album version...

Yes with BTTF and Innerspace, in fact LaLaLand's release has even more music than any previous version ever had.

The only difference is the mix on the cue "Optic Nerve", the original album's title was "Enviromental Adjust". The synth pulse beats are somewhat mixed out of the second half of the cue on the LaLaLand album.

Some people at FSM did raise issue.

Back To The Future is definitely a must. The DeLorean boot that had been floating around for ages was far from complete. In fact that boot used some alternate cues for a few things.

Not sure if anyone else caught this on FSM but in the "Days Of Our Lives Thread" over there, this is something of interesting to note that MV wrote about their, major MAJOR release dates.

3/23, 4/20, 5/4, 7/20 and 11/30

He also said there are other good stuff coming out this year from them too but those specific dates mentioned will be something big on each date.

Sadly no, and even if they did, at that price and knowing the mexican post service, it would most likely get lost.

Hmmm, The Flash may be worth checking out. The theme is on Music for a Darkened Theater Vol. II. I thought it was pretty good.

Oh yeah, the theme is good if a bit too much like Batman's.

Hopefully this means LaLaLand will release more DC stuff, I really, really want at least two more volumes of Batman: TAS, however it seems this was supposed to come out before the Batman CD so the deal was made before this whole "Warner wants to release stuff on its own label" thing.

No it wasn't a limited edition, there is no mention on the CD or liner notes. Since it was sold in regular stores, I saw copies in Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and Fryes to name a few, I'm guessing LaLaLand had either an unlimited pressing, a set limit that was larger than 3000 or a contract with Toho for a certain period to distribute.

Toho is pretty strict with their licensing and copyrights when it comes to Godzilla.

I'm sure you will enjoy it. I would also recommend, if you haven't seen the film, to get a copy of the Classic Media release of the original version to see how Ifukube's music works within the film. It's a somewhat different way of scoring compared to American composers.

I want to buy it as well, and I liked the clips of Nate and Hayes. I'm on the fence about The Flash. I really like Shirley Walker's work for Batman TAS, but I haven't decided if it's because I like Shirley Walker or because I like Batman.

I'll wait and see what Intrada's releases are before I make any commitments.

Ifukube would use mostly motifs and themes as set pieces, John Barry would be be the closest example I could think of. There wasn't a lot of "Mickey Mousing" in Ifukube's work. Part of it had to do with the short time period he was allotted. He may have had 2 weeks to 5 days to compose and orchestrate a score.

For some people this can become a tad bit repetitive to listen too, although Ifukube stated in interviews that he never intended for his music to be heard outside of the films they were composed for.

Here is an interview with Ifukube that gives some insight, he even mentions having some of John Williams' recordings, although he doesn't go into detail.

http://www.historyvortex.org/InterviewAkiraIfukube.html

I would recommend seeking out some of his concert works if you get a chance.

Days of our Lives? Seriously, Days of our Lives? :o

Normally I won't disparage a release as I know there's always someone out there that wants it, but...Days of our Lives?

If you read these boards LaLa- Farscape. Volume 4. Make it happen. :)

I thought I read on FSM that there was a Days Of Our Lives score released a few year ago and it was a big hit, so La-La Land thought why not. Personally I don't think this will sell well, if it does I'll eat my own words...but ya I know I won't be buying a "Days Of Our Lives" music. I'd much rather have music from the recent show "Jericho".

I know it's a somewhat odd title but I believe previous similar releases have done well.

I will say that most of the labels have their fingers on the pulse of what people want and what will sell. Every once and awhile they will misfire on a title or underestimate the demand.

Am I the only one who thinks that music from The Flash could have easily been tracked/reused in the Batman Animated episodes had they needed it, and no one would have known the difference? Really, it feels like I'm listening to what could have been passed off as "Batman: The Animated Series" volume 2.

Eh, Batman, Dick Tracy, The Flash... they all feel the same to me.
